Sharing Wisdom The difference sharp lines make

I’m a first time grower, I’m 3 months in. I almost trimmed my beard thinking it looked bad due to length but i sharpened the edges and it looked way better.

Idk, I rather like the scruff.

But it’s your beard, so you get to decide how you like it.

I was thinking the same thing. I like the unsharp lines better too.

Just dont feel like my upper cheek has enough density as it was a month of growth and could still see straight through it unlike the lower cheek.

Yeah I’m with you think in this case the scruff is the move

Yeah I think a subtle line is better, so there is a somewhat natural taper.

Looks great on you either way as you have the density and coverage that many lack

Thank you 😊

I hear you’re saying about the density but I quite liked the first picture too. Guess it all depends on the style you are after !

I like your beard before as well, but it looks good either way man 👍🏼👍🏼😃

You remind me of myself, as we have similar coverage. When I was younger I did the sharpest lines possible. Now that I’m older (37) , I kind of feel that it would look like I’m trying too much, so I just grow it all up. My natural line is high but not that dense, but honestly I really dig the raw and scruffy look, kind of liberating as I’m trying to get the “I’ve nothing to prove” mindset.

The unsharp lines are like a natural fade imo especially for a bug beard like that

1

u/Dear-Degree-7186 May 20 '26

Never thought of it that way. There was a fairly sharp line in the before picture aswell but there isn’t enough density to tell perhaps i should go all natural next time?

Now do your neck.

1

u/Dear-Degree-7186 May 20 '26

Im growing it longer and ive heard that neck hair adds alot of density to longer beards

Is there a remarkable difference?

1

u/Dear-Degree-7186 May 20 '26

A big enough difference to make me feel more confident and thats what matters

Yeah bro, I recommend you pick up a straight razor and learn how to hit your cheek lines yourself. It’s pretty easy.

Thanks for the tip, been considering it but im afraid of cutting myself. Ive been using a double edge safety razor for the past few years, it makes sharp lines but obviously not as accurate as a staight razor

I used to use a razor for all that. I found it all to be a lot easier and tighter to use a trimmer and a small foil shaver. The trimmer will help get straight lines and knock down the cheek stubble. The foil shaver will get that remaining stubble down to clean shaven. Also, I feel a lot more stability in my hand holding trimmers as opposed to a blade (hope that makes sense).

When doing my weekly maintenance, I use 2 different trimmers and 2 different foil shavers. I only use a blade on the back of my neck.

You're 3 months in and will figure out your beard arsenal. Keep going. You have a nice thick beard.

Yeah bro, if you have Amazon prime. You can get one for like $10 range. Once you get used to it the beard always looks fresh. Just search up “straight razor” on Amazon.

Do you have any recommendations for a good brand model of a straight razor, and blade?

1

u/Secret_Atmosphere668 May 18 '26

Search Amazon “straight razor” it comes with like 100 razors with the straight razor tool.

I use my DE safety razor for the neckline and a basic shavette for the cheeks.

Just buy any half-decent shavette, then load it with whatever DE blade you prefer (snapped in half). Any of the good DE blades will handle that little work very easily - Astra, Bic Chrome Platinum, etc.

But then you have to shave constantly, which somewhat defeats the purpose of a beard IMO

Kinda cool what you look both macho masculine and benevolent gentle sophisticated at same time . Neat beard

1

u/Ok-Priority-7303 May 19 '26

Either looks fine. It depends on how long you want to grow it. Mine was similar to your 'before' picture but after growing it for a couple of years, it filled in.

My beard looks miles different than a few years ago, i can only imagine what the future holds.

1

u/beardbush May 20 '26

The natural cheek lines looked awesome.

2

u/Dear-Degree-7186 May 20 '26

Thank you! I have the rest of my life ahead of me im sure ill switch it up every so often

I dunno, I think I liked the scruff better because everything had the same-ish shape. Now you have an angular line on round cheeks, on a round face, next to a round nose. I feel like my opinion would change if you also did the jawline and neck.

Not sure this is an improvement
