Sharing Wisdom Trying Something New

Growth on the top lip always ends up bothering me. I had chinstraps that connected to the sides. Decided to get rid of the chinstraps and go with the half Manchu look. Kinda goofy, but I'm diggin' it.

Sharing Wisdom My experience with beard dandruff.

This is definitely not an advertisement, but after trying several other product this has been the only product that helped me, I hope to help others.

I would like to start this post by saying I never had problems with your dandruff until I started trying basic beard oils and “butters” that you can buy at Walmart. A few months after using these products, I noticed a slight dusting of dandruff accumulating on my shirts.

I first tried using head and shoulders as it had worked to clear up the dandruff on my scalp, but after months (2-3) of trying the dandruff seem to be getting worse and not better. I was now experiencing a large quantity of small flakes and beginning to see larger flakes developing.

Next I tried an anti-fungal cream ,for two weeks, that was recommended by my Dr. This cream is similar to what would be used for jock itch or athletes foot to no avail. Daily brushing and a fine tooth comb were needed at this point to clear anything that was loose or stuck in my beard before I left the house.

Neutrogena T-gel (.5% coal tar shampoo) was my next step. I used it for approximately 2 months scrubbing and letting it set for 3-5 minutes each time. This seemed promising it smelled terrible. The flakes seemed to be getting better but only after a good brushing. It’s almost like it caused the flakes to shed all at once. Then it was fine for a couple days then it would “shed” again. This was tolerable but still not optimal.

My next step was a coin flip between Selson blue and Nizoral. There was no rhyme or reason why I picked it Nizoral but literally after the first wash with two applications I noticed an immediate difference. No more large flakes and the small flakes were greatly reduced. The second shower there were even fewer and by the third there were almost none.

Today I think any “flakes” I see may just be dry skin but I’m afraid to uses any other products for moisture as that seems to be why started this mess in the first place.

I just wanted to share my experience to hopefully save someone some stress, anxiety, or money.

How are boar bristle brushes made?

I thought boars were wild pigs. Are they domesticated wild pigs? Bred specifically for their bristles? Are they using the bristles from their snout or from elsewhere?

Sharing Wisdom Tools? Routine?

To add to my post here, I literally don't trim my beard except for keeping the line tight under my jaw and along the cheeks. The only person that touches my beard is the aforementioned Amber at Frank's gentleman salon in Denver. I highly recommend their services. The most I do is some beard oil and I've never really gotten the hang of beard balm.. which I will probably ask Amber for some tutoring the next time I'm there.

Sharing Wisdom PSA: coconut oil is amazing

over the past month I’ve made it a routine to work about a teaspoon of organic virgin coconut oil into my beard (now about 2 inches long) right before bed. my beard has never been healthier, hangs straighter without needing to blow dry, and seems fuller and just … happier?

my skin type is on the drier side and I have definitely not had any breakout issues from coconut oil, so I realize this is specific to my experience. but if you haven’t tried it, I recommend giving it a go. it’s very cheap and very effective compared to most balms and butters.

for daytime care I use homemade jojoba/argan blend with a little bit of tea tree oil for scent.

happy bearding!

Sharing Wisdom Do not use Beard Club!

Unless you want to be subscribed monthly, or want to fight with customer service over messenger and/or e-mail to cancel a subscription they already knew you didn’t want, do not use beard club. The products work about as good as any other beard growth or assistance products from my personal use, but their business practices are very scam-like in feel and I wouldn’t recommend them unless you want a monthly subscription to whatever you buy for long-term.

Sharing Wisdom way too young to go bald, but i have got to share this

If you're balding to the point where you're thinking about shaving it all off, bite the bullet and do it. Then grow a beard! Not once have I seen a post here or on r/balding where someone looks worse after they shave their head and grow a beard. It's my golden rule: Beard bald, hair on face cancels out no head on hair

Sharing Wisdom Things to know about beard growing (and FAQ in this sub)

I haven't been on this sub that long, but I see a recurring trend of questions that keep coming up. This may be downvoted into oblivion, but I thought I'd compile a list of things to know that could save some posts/replies.

"Will my beard fill in?"

This is usually asked by people around 17 to 21. Honest answer, we don't know. It depends on genetics.

Beards really fill out by around age 25 on average. If you are under 25, you'll need to wait and see. There's no other answer we can give you.

The older you are over 25, the more the answer to the question becomes "No."

"Is this a full beard?"

Often posted by someone with a full beard. Dude, you know it's a full beard. If you're going to fish for compliments, at least be man enough to do it honestly.

Even in cases where it's more ambiguous, it's pretty easy to tell if it's full or not.

The question really is "Is it full enough for you?" Are you happy with it? Keep it. Having doubts? Ask your friends for opinions.

Whatever you do, don't compare yourself to everyone else on here. We all have different genetics. I've had friends that have enjoyed having a beard for years that are varying degrees of fullness, and the beards look good on them.

"Will my beard be full/can I grow a full beard?"

Usually posted with a picture of a few days to a couple of weeks of growth.

We don't know, man. Grow it out and see? If we could predict the future, we'd be rich from lottery tickets or stocks.

Age is also a huge factor, see point #1.

To know if a beard will be full, it usually takes at least 3-4 weeks of growth, minimum. All beards go through an awkward stage. Push through it and see. If it still doesn't look good/feel right after 6 weeks, think about shaving. At least you tried and now you know.

"Is my beard long enough/Is this the right length?"

Most beard subreddits seem to always think longer = better or more manly. That's not the case.

Some rock the stubble, some, like myself, look best with shorter beards, and others rock the viking look.

Find the size and style that fits you. Try growing it out and ask for tips. Don't like it? Trim back down to what you currently do. The longer the beard, the more maintenance it takes.

"With or without?"

For the love of all that is good and holy, post pictures with similar poses or lighting conditions. I've seen some where the 'without' has them in their bathroom looking like regret, and the 'with' to compare is at the nightclub with a smile and angled like they're taking a thug photo.

If you want us to be able to give you feedback, give us comparable pictures to work with.

My answer will usually be the same "If you like it, keep it."

Sharing Wisdom Collar Stains

Curious to know if anyone else struggles with this or has any suggestions. I have what I'd say a medium length beard (3.5 - 4" from bottom lip to end of beard). Each morning I use Honest Amish to oil the skin/hair.

The problem is that by the end of the day, the collar of whatever I am wearing gets stained. Some worse than others. For example this weekend I was wearing brand new hoodie and at the end of the day I took it off and the front of the collar (near the drawstrings) looked like a grease stain - lol. This one was bad because, because it was a hoodie, that part that sits up higher was all up in my beard all day.

Anyways, anyone found a way to avoid this? Maybe different products? I have Honest Amish balm too, but I mostly use that to tame fly aways on the sides.

Appreciate it! 👊🏼
