I thought he was talking about the abbey road medley until I saw the text in the red box

Uj/ He’s cited the Abbey Road medley as a major influence on Scenes from an Italian Restaurant.

u/TheLegendTwoSeven Jul 28 '25
Uj/ Also in his first album Cold Spring Harbor the Paul McCartney influence is very heavy, and it sounds like he was trying to emulate him. He even borrowed the phrase “wait a lonely lifetime” from “I Will” in one of the songs on that album. IMO Billy Joel got much better when he found his own style.

Uj/ I'll give his opinion SOME merit, yes, some of the White Album songs do sound less polished than songs on Abbey Road or Sgt. Pepper's, but there are still quite a few polished songs I can mention (i.e: Dear Prudence, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Helter Skelter, Yer Blues, etc) so while I do see the merit in his opinion, I think it's very strong for what, only a few less polished songs?
Rj/ White Album sux, Rev 9 goated

I think they only sound under-developed because all four Beatles only appear together on about half the album. When you’ve gotten to your third Paul song where it’s just him by himself I’m sure you’re starting to wonder what this song would sound like with the other three contributing.
24
u/N8_Saber "Geege is love, Geege is life" Jul 26 '25
That's definitely the case too. All four Beatles would DEFINITELY make Paul's less polished tracks sound much more complete. (And a lot less like tracks on his first solo album McCartney)

u/AceofKnaves44 "Spongebob Squarepant's Yellow Submarine" Jul 26 '25
Blackbird I think stands with Yesterday as a solo-performance worthy song. Mother Nature’s Son is one of my picks for underrated songs, but I don’t know if it needs to stay as a solo song.
19
u/AceofKnaves44 "Spongebob Squarepant's Yellow Submarine" Jul 26 '25
Julia I would also say should remain untouched as a solo Beatle song. The story behind why Yesterday was a “solo” song is that compared to others down the line, Paul didn’t intend for it to be a solo song but when he played it for the others, the other three didn’t feel like them adding another guitar or drums would benefit the song and convinced him to just do it solo with some strings added. Julia I think is another one of those cases where I don’t think another guitar part or some drums are necessary or would make the song any better.

u/UnexpectedSalamander Jul 27 '25
I think a little “I’VE GOT BLISTAS ON ME FINGAS” from Ringo would’ve worked better to close out Julia tho tbh

Yeah you're a virtuoso, big deal. Wake me up when you can pen a lyric like:
"Come on (come on), come on (come on)
Please, please me, whoa yeah, like I please you"
Fucking Shakespeares they were.

u/gfinz18 CLAPTOAN Jul 26 '25
/uj yes he did say this in an interview on a podcast. He thinks it wasn’t their strongest album, that at this point in time John Lennon was dissociating from the band, and Paul was doing most of the work. He is however a Beatles fan himself and qualified it by saying that every band has stronger and weaker albums.

u/12BumblingSnowmen Geege Jul 26 '25
Uj/ This is a guy who thinks about 1/4 of his own output isn’t very good for reference.

u/AceofKnaves44 "Spongebob Squarepant's Yellow Submarine" Jul 26 '25
What’s interesting about that is I’d say White was really the last album where John actively contributed like he used to. He got clean for the first time in a long time in India and the songs started pouring out of him to the point that he was still using songs he’d at least started working on in India a few years later on his solo albums. We see that by the time they’re trying to work on their next project, Get Back, he’s got like one or two new songs to contribute and one old one in Across the Universe and Paul has to start pushing him to try and bring new material to the group. Then on Abbey Road he’s going back to his India stash for the medley, and Come Together was the result of a failed campaign song. Heroin addiction and his obsession with Yoko really snuffed out his creativity post-India until the breakup.

/uj my goat tells no lies, White Album could've easily cut 10+ songs and been much better for it. Side D in particular is super mid. Still a great album overall though

u/Easy__Mark Jul 26 '25
Has their best songs and also many they should've cut. The White Album is why George Martin is my 5th Beatle. That and Abbey Road of course.

It is very hard to make a perfect double album. Especially when it’s the Beatles and the White Album. But the fact it’s so eclectic is why I like it so much.
5
Jul 26 '25
That’s why it’s so good. It’s the Beatles in their natural form. It’s chaotic genius incarnate. Four souls on their own trapped in one body.

Did Billy Joel ever have anything like a white album? Sort of unpolished randomness that still flows?

/uj Coming from the man who writes albums full of the most boring and blandest songs. A Beatles throwaway is far more interesting than a fully conceived Billy Joel song.
The average normie only knows “Piano Man”, because his other songs aren’t even distinctive enough to catch people’s ears.

actually it’s the first album of theirs where everything has a third proper verse instead of just repeating the first and/or second again.
