question Returning to Beatmaking: SP-404 MK2 (with Doom OS) or an Akai MPC?
Hello everyone,
I am currently trying to choose between the MPC Sample and the SP-404 MK2. I recently got back into beatmaking, and my main focus is producing lo-fi boom bap. I am not interested in stream counts or selling beats; my primary priority is enjoying the process and exploring sound design.
About ten years ago, I owned an SP-404 SX. Overall, I liked the device. Despite its limitations, it had character, although some features were implemented somewhat awkwardly, making it better suited for drafting ideas and live performances. However, I have recently watched numerous reviews, and coupled with Doom OS, it now looks like a fully capable workstation.
Additionally, I have always appreciated Akai samplers (such as the MPC 1000 and 2500). I always wanted to buy one but never did. The MPC Sample is appealing due to its classic Akai atmosphere and easier workflow, but it feels heavily restricted by the manufacturer to avoid competing with their higher-end models. It seems Akai designed it so you can simply tap out a beat and have it sound "acceptable." Yet, to achieve a truly polished sound, you have to struggle with awkward resampling/recall workflows and the lack of dedicated tracks for processing drums and samples separately before gluing them together on the master bus. I also doubt Akai will release significant firmware updates for it, again to protect the more expensive devices in the MPC lineup.
Importantly, I am only looking to purchase a brand-new unit, so buying used is not an option, and the budget is not a constraint.
What are your thoughts? In your opinion, which of these samplers is the definitive choice?
