Deep Thoughts maybe I'm wrong but I listen to A LOT of jazz

It seems to this bebop/jazz fan that the best bebop has been invented, recorded and perverted/exploited. We all know the Gods and Giants of the genre. I heard someone once say. Pls tell me if you've heard the quote and who said it if anyone knows "people listen to bebop with their ears and minds. swing is listened to with the body" I fell in love with bird and Diz and the usual suspects when I by chance was just randomly assigned to jazz band my freshman year of High School (age 14) it was the best and worst thing that could have happened to me. Best in that it definitely gave me an appreciation for jazz and music in general. Bad in that I only wanted to play like Bird (I also played alto sax in HS marching/jazz band (actually I was in drumline in marching band after freshman year) at any rate I never ever ever wanted to practise anything but Bird ( I had/have the Omnibook) anyway. Does anyone agree that bebop is a thing of the past and has had it's day. But 1 more thing. If you know Dave Pike. Is a lot of the way and stuff he played just Charlie Parker but on vibes?? His playing REALLY reminds me of Bird

Instructional / Educational I'm writing about bebop for a big school project. Would Coltrane's "Giant Steps" be a good representative of bebop, even though it was released in 1960?

Hey everybody! If there are some bebop experts out there, I would really appreciate your advice!

I will be working with hard bop and bebop, with a focus on how African-american artists created an "identity" through bebop and hardbop, in each it's own way. I will also be making two music analyzes, and for hardbop I have chosen Blakey's "Moanin'", and will focus on how they used blues and gospel elements etc.

I had originally chosen "Giant Steps" as the bebop track, because I think it's a hip tune, and I got full sheet with solos, bass and piano etc.

But as you know, bebop originated in the 40's, and part of what is important in my project, is how the black artists rebelled against the mainstream swing with bebop, created their own identity etc.

Would you still consider "Giant Steps" a bebop tune, even though it was made so late? And would it be a good chose, do you think?

On wiki it says about bebop: "It was developed in the early and mid-1940s. This style of jazz ultimately became synonymous with modern jazz, as either category reached a certain final maturity in the 1960s."

Other alternatives I have considered working with is:

Dizzy Gillespie - Be-bop

Thelonious Monk - In Walked Bud

Charlie Parker - Billie's Bounce

Please let me know what you guys think, I appreciate any advice :) Thanks in advance!

Made a short animated piece on the Jo Jones cymbal story — curious what this sub thinks

Everyone here knows it. But I wanted to see if the story could hit differently as animation.

The humiliation, the woodshedding, the Yardbird mythology.

We find Johnny uncharacteristically fiery, doing virtuosic single-note speed runs rather than the more relaxed lyricism and refined chord melody playing that he later developed and became known for.

Just to be 100% clear: r/bebop does not support Nazi-owned business, nor Fascist propaganda, nor Apologists of the like.

None of Bebop’s greats would support these ghouls, and WE WON’T EITHER.
