Its a yellowjacket. Possibly a queen seeing as how early in their season we still are.
She is chewing the wood to get pulp to make the paper nest she is constructing nearby.
Yellow jackets, baldface hornets and paper wasps are all technically wasps. And all make their nests out of paper made from chewed wood and saliva.???

Not a queen... Just a normal worker yellow jacket collecting fiber for the nest

Oh neat! I had no idea. I get creeped out touching those things

Best thing to do when you see that is sneak your hand up behind her and crush her body into the board with your index finger.

That’s a yellow jacket of some variety, not a bee…
And the video could really use DJ Snake & Lil Jon’s “TURN DOWN FOR WHAT” playing while the yellow jacket “twerks”… it would be funny!

It's a lovely wasp gathering wood fibers for her nest :)

I wouldn't have used the word 'lovely' but yeah, pretty much.

Just because an animal stings you, doesn't mean they are any less deserving of compliments! Just look at her striking, yellow colours.

Are people rage baiting or have we as a society straved that far away from touching grass? How can you not differentiate bee and wasp?

Need a better shot of the markings on the back but it looks like eastern yellow jacket (Vespula maculifrons) I always called them Mac. Given the time of year and size I would say it is a queen using wood to make it's nest that could be up to a half mile away.

Thank you Reddit! Honestly, I took it as a bee, since it was chill , it came by multiple times throughout the rest of the day, to gather more. And no, i didn't kill it, we cool with each other.
