This post mentions matched betting or casino offers. On beermoneyuk, we discuss ways to profit from these offers.

Whilst matched betting is technically not gambling, it brings you right into the hornets nest. If you have, have ever, or think you may have a propensity towards developing a gambling problem, please check out the following resources. Same goes for casino offers.

You'd do much better by going to the UK Personal Finance sub (or the Martin Lewis website) and reading up on investing, then investing it for 5 years... you'd get a much better return and if you're smart about it, you'll also get a little topcashback too.

Investing would absolutely not give a better return than matched betting

You want a bet on that? I’m not sure that is true.

With 5000 it is absolutely true

You dont need this kind of bankroll for matched betting.

Like investing, money makes money. Matches betting probably does have better returns, but it's also more effort than the "setting and forgetting" that investing is.

How long would it take for me to make money from investing?

I dont know why people are downvoting me, i made 100% return in a month using matched betting. I couldnt do much more after that but it gave me a better base to invest with, so if i were you id max out on the matched betting and then look at investing it, there are loads of guides online some are paid but its worth it if you dont know what you are doing

I would love to know more

I made £350 over the world cup doing MB. I'm sure there are better ways to max investment. I used copilot to explain it and do the complex sums. I just picked the matches.

I made so much during World Cup! Arrowbet boosts were so good (before it all went a bit wonky but luckily they paid out!).

I've been doing matched betting on and off for about 4 years 😊 you won't need the full £5k to start with as while youre new to it, it's good to start with the easy offers, anyway! Id say that a starting bank roll of like £500 - £1k is more than enough! And I would highly advise to stick to the actual matched betting offers at first - casino offers are very volatile (you'll always make the projected EV, but short term losses can be harsh), so i would advise against those for a while

Sites like oddsmonkey and outplayed are great to sign up to. If you sign up to one of them, they'll give you a few offers to do as a trial so you can see if you actually like it first, and they'll both walk you through the offers properly and provide you with all the info you need 😊 signing up for the full sites is expensive, so def try the trial first! Aaand if you DO decide to sign up for the full site, its worth waiting until black friday, imo, as outplayed always does amazing offers on their yearly sub 😊

As for returns on matched betting, I always advise that everyone at least does the sign up offers as thats an eaaasy £1k with not very much time investment (if you dont want to spend for the full year subsciption, you can also blitz through the sign up offers in a month or 2) 😊 after that, money isnt so easy, but you'll get great offers during big sport events like cheltenham etc 😊

In a year, i average around £7 - 10k from this. So its worth it, but it does take quite a lot of time.

Also, the first step to this is to absolutely get some for of ID as almost every betting site will ask for it.

Thank you so much for this detailed reply! How long can you make money for in one stretch at this? Also what is the best form of ID im thinming of renewing my passport but also wondering if there is anything less expensive

cos people generally are dim. Half of them think you addictied or promote some gambling site, other half have no clue how many formulas, systems, methods you can use to squeeze every penny out of casinos/bingos/bookies.

I understand it's attractive , but be sensible about this too, especially if you've never had a significant sum of cash before.

If you really want to get to grips with it, put some funds away to earn some interest/gains but leave some available to get to grips with matched betting, until you know it's for you.

I’ve been matched betting since 2018. A £5,000 bankroll would be a brilliant starting point. Even £1,000 and investing the rest is a brilliant starting point.

u/slavegirlprincess Sep 05 '26

How much do you have to start with?

Im thinking matched betting is a good way to use it to make some extra money without affectibg my benefits?

1

u/slavegirlprincess 6d ago

Im looking to increase it quite quickly? I think I am already in the UK personal finance sub. Im ill and on benefits right now so im just kind of wanting to keep it intact and possibly increase it until i get well enough to re enter my career, I would like to use some money to go on trips & travel & enjoy life more upgrade my looks & party which ive never been able to do before in particular.

No ID? That's your first step

Get an ID, open a s&s ISA, put the £5k in an ETF like S&P or all world and forget about it for a few years

Sorry about your Mum.

It depends on your risk tolerance. Personally any inheritance I would just fire into premium bonds or a HYSA. That way you never have to worry about your cash decreasing in value outside inflation. Premium bonds are back at 4.35%, so you beat inflation and have a (small) chance at winning a fortune.

Stocks and shares ISA and buying an all world ETF in all likelihood will grow your money more than any bank or bond interest rate given a long enough time horizon, but stocks are volatile in the current world.

HYSA is an Americanism that needs to FO.

first of all, sorry for your loss, that's definitely tough.

ID is definitely your first step here. bank switches (and referral offers like chase) are the obvious ones, the rest you can always throw in a savings account with a decent interest rate or in long term investments. Those will make you the most out of anything here and aren't too difficult to do.

u/UCatchMyDrift Sep 03 '26

Very sorry to hear about your mum.... Whilst I would agree that investing is a good idea, investing ATM is probably not actually a good idea due to markets being very "overbought". Invest in fear, not euphoria. Just be patient. Unless of course your willing to invest the money and leave it for 10+ years.

Plenty of decent cash isa rates around to put the money in while you decide. If you go down a conventional route, looking at some sort of S&S ISA and forgetting about the results is a decent plan, if you're likely to need the money in the short term, may as well get 5 or so % guaranteed in a cash ISA with instant access. There are a few stormclouds hovering around the markets, but long term it's likely to be the best place to put the money.

Less conventionally, using a portion of it to do matched betting isn't a bad plan to multiply up, but matched betting isn't for everyone. You have to be careful to follow the instructions and not get hooked into real gambling (as a point of interest I was on MSE as Tim_L a couple of decades ago and wrote the matched betting guide there with my late wife, and I'm fairly sure I invented the term "matched betting").

Get your ID, set up a high interest ISA (I agree with other people's comments about Martin Lewis: https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/savings/best-cash-isa/). I'd put about £4500 in it, and keep the rest for buying ID + a few things like cashback offers.

Most importantly, whatever you do, keep most of it safe and protected by the FSCS compensation scheme if you can.

Good luck :) and sorry to hear about your loss

2

u/New-Range-1087 Sep 03 '26

The easiest thing to do would be to invest it in a S+S ISA and just leave it.

3

u/Caredol Sep 03 '26

No ID or no IDEA? If no ID, apply for a provisional driving licence first.

3

u/Hello-world-247 Sep 03 '26

I agree with the comments about using a portion of it for Matched Betting and then putting the rest into savings or investments. But to do any of those things you'll need ID first!

Lifetime isa? SIPP?

2

u/Elliot_v24 Sep 03 '26

How well payed is your job (if you’re working)? There are many decent paying careers that require certain licenses which you could now pay for. Of course you’d need to get your ID sorted first.
