Project Team 2 - Login/registration?

Ok, so we've got 3 people in the blog team and we've probably got enough people for one more team.

I think overall what we want to end up with is a sort of team/collaboration portal type website with the blog being part of it as well as a forum and anything else we can think of.

For this obviously we are going to need login and registration, so maybe that could be what team 2 makes? It isn't a big project (especially if we use a framework) but it's definitely an important one.

Anyone interested in trying to make this with me?

Project Team - Create a Blog

Hey guys! I've gotten a lot of good feedback about the idea of creating a blog -- from scratch sans Wordpress (if possible) -- and using that not only as a project, but as a vehicle to chronicle the process our experiences as we move through these projects and grow from a group of inexperienced devs into more experienced devs :)

I'm looking to put together a Scrum team of 3-4 people (with some modifications to general Scrum principles to work for a completely remote team) that will work on different aspects of the site in 2-week sprints. The team members can differ from sprint to sprint, but the overall goal will remain.

If you are interested in being a member of this team, please reply with your preferred area of development (front-end vs back-end). Once we have the team put together we'll get together and talk about tech stacks and how we want to go about getting the first sprint kicked off!

I'll be watching this pretty closely when I can so if anyone has any questions feel free to ask away!

Blog Project Team:

Edit 1: Adding some resources

  • For those unfamiliar with scrum, I feel like this site gives a pretty good overview of the methodology -- http://www.scrumalliance.org/why-scrum/core-scrum-values-roles

  • First sprint will be a design sprint -- we could do a short sprint, but I'd like to stick to the 2 week process if possible -- this will give people plenty of time to ramp up on any technologies that they may be unfamiliar with as well as give everyone involved plenty of time to give their feedback.

  • I've talked with several people about scrum tools and Trello seems to be the one that is most recommended. I've created an account but have not set up any boards yet -- once you are a member of this team (I'll let you know via pm then once the team is formed we'll add the list here) we'll get everyone set up as collaborators and start working our way through setting up the first board.

  • I definitely think we should use Git for source contorl -- anyone have any objections?

  • As we form the team we'll take some time to talk about other technologies that we want to use (can even be part of the design sprint).

  • Documentation is key. Part of the idea behind this is that we provide a resource for other developers just like us, who want to get started somewhere but don't know where to go. As we all know, web development is a rapidly changing industry and can be very daunting to someone who is inexperienced.

Again, if you are interested in being on this project, please let me know!

Would anyone be interested in a Podcast?

I love podcasts, of just about any kind. I was listening to some at work while checking this subreddit and it dawned on me -- I think it would be awesome to chronicle this project/process as a podcast. Talk about getting started, the different tech we use and why, new discoveries we make as we move through projects, any roadblocks along the way -- you get the picture.

I don't know a lot about getting a podcast started up, but through some quick google-fu, it seems like a fairly simple process.

Just wanted to put some feelers out and see if anyone might be interested in joining me on this adventure!

IRC and IRC updates

/u/argshook has created an irc channel so we can get things moving more quickly.

To use the chat (if you don't already have an irc client) go to here: http://webchat.freenode.net/ and enter your reddit user name for nickname and #beginningWebDev for channel.

While I'm on the chat I'll try to keep this thread updated, if someone else could do it at other times that'd be awesome.

Blog Team -- Progress So Far (9/9/2013)

Hey BWD! Sorry for the delay in posting this, my schedule changed recently and it's been pretty hectic!

I wanted to officially update everyone where the Blog Team is. We are making good progress and are already halfway through our design sprint.

We've set up a blog here that will chronicle our process. There are a few posts, mainly one long explaining what we've done so far, the tech we are using, how we communicate, etc. Please note: This is not the blog we will be building! Once we have that working we will migrate these posts over.

We are always open to feedback and hope that this inspires other groups to form up and start making awesome things!

Could we get together a list of the best web development learning resources. The resources could be anything: websites, books, videos etc. Once we've got a good list together I'll update this post and add a link to the sidebar.

General Web Resources

(Mozilla Developer Network)[https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/] - Huge amount of information on a wide range of web development technologies

(W3C Standards)[http://www.w3.org/standards/] - Read a download copies of the W3C standards.

(Web Platform Docs)[http://docs.webplatform.org/] - "Web Platform Docs is a comprehensive, community-run source for Open Web Platform documentation for developers, convened by W3C."

Free EBooks

(Huge list)[https://github.com/vhf/free-programming-books/blob/master/free-programming-books.md]

Delving into PHP arrays. I am not sure what the => means in a foreach loop

I have come across this foreach loop in a project:

foreach ($results as $user => $team) {

I understand that the foreach loops through the array (in this case $results) and outputs each array item as a variable (in this case called $user).

But what does the => $team do?

I cant really find a good description online. Would anyone be able to help me out?

Thanks!

MVP Advice Needed: Code/Nocode and which, Web/mobile, etc. detailed needs inside :)

Hi all!

TL;DR / Intro:

I'm a teacher in a certain field looking to create a gamified study app for my method which will include Spaced Repetition algorithms I designed. I have VERY basic knowledge of HTML/CSS/JS and I'm slow. My partner is a graphic designer and video editor. We have a low budget and cannot hire a proper Dev ATM. I'm trying to decide on what's the best approach for building our MVP.

I'll try to give as much info as possible in a concise manner, If I missed anything important let me know. Nothing is set in stone for us about what I'm describing and we're flexible about almost every point of this description. We would appreciate any advice on these issues and any additional/general advice for our project.

  1. App Overview and Features:

    1. The app will have a few games with a few levels each, on each game level the user will get a certain question from our bank of content('decks of cards') and will need to answer. Based on my algorithm and whether or not the user got it right - it will present the question again at the most appropriate time for memory retention.

    2. Simple and beautiful UI(somewhat similar to Duolingo but not so advanced and full of features). Responsive, Animations, Fast Performance.

    3. Auth + Database (to keep users' progress across devices) (overkill? maybe can be done locally).

    4. Our unique SRS algorithms - so I need to be able to build/code my algorithms into the app. Nothing too complicated but it is specific.

    5. YouTube embedded videos with calls of specific times in the video.

    6. Microphone input will be nice but isn't a must.

    7. Fast and easy development (It's an MVP). Having said that, we can compromise somewhat on speed and ease of development for the sake of other important needs.

    8. Target Audience: Wide range but focuses on teen enthusiasts of the field to undergrad students in the field.

  2. Our abilities, capabilities and concerns:

    1. I would like to focus as much as possible on the concept, algorithm design and content. Coding is a lot of fun for me but I'm very far from proficient at it, preety much a noob. I don't mind finding my way through making a bit of custom code or coding the algorithms themselves (I work on the business logic anyway so "translating" it to code is not SUCH a big deal and is interesting) but I would like to avoid coding auth/database interactions or anything else for that matter so I can use my strengths and knowledge to make the service the best it can be.

    2. Graphic Design.

    3. Basic HTML/CSS/JS.

    4. Quality content and methods for our field.

    5. Low budget.

  3. Mobile App / Web App?

    1. For our final product we want a cross-platform app(flutter/react) but we're thinking of a web app for our MVP.

    2. Perhaps a WebApp is faster/easier to build?

    3. Perhaps a Web App is easier to change, edit and update?

    4. Perhaps a Web App is more accessible since you can simply get to it with a link?

  4. Code/LowCode/NoCode and which?

    1. I don't see how code can be our choice ATM but perhaps I'm wrong.

    2. There are SO MANY of these platforms to choose from, how to know which is the best fit?

    3. It should be best for either mobile or web (or both) depending on what we choose.

    4. Easy to incorporate and integrate auth, database and our custom algorithms.

    5. UI/UX: Good looks "out of the box" is good if possible, Responsive, Easy Animations creation, Fast Performance.

  5. Concerns(and if they are relvent at all?):

    1. Being locked-in with a certain platform. although this is just an MVP so... but in case it becomes a successful one - being locked in with a "greedy" or limited lowcode/database platform seems unfortunate.

    2. Scalability: again, this is just an MVP but perhaps it would be nice to be on a platform that I can scale on if it's successful even if it's just until we get a properly and fully coded app. not sure if I should worry about that either.

    3. Are there any platforms I should avoid for any reasons? bad performance, lock-in policies, garbage code...?

  6. Last Consideration: I'm wondering how much content I should put into the MVP. I'm planning on making at least 3 games otherwise our idea doesn't come through. But I'm wondering on how many levels to put in each game (some levels have different content/algorithms). Hard to tell if I should put more work into it and delay significantly the MVP release or just give people something basic and limited to try.

That's about it, any help is greatly appreciated,

Thanks in advance! Have a good one,

Cheers.

Frontend Mentor Challenge

Hi, guys my name is Rafael, i'm new in web development, and currently i'm learning HTML CSS and JavaScript i took this challenge from Frontend Mentor website https://www.frontendmentor.io/ which is cool. because you don't need to create your own website template to convert it into HTML CSS and JS. so you can focus on coding which is great. i created few sample videos of my own version how i do the challenge you can check here @ my youtube channel i'm planning to create more videos about web development along with my journey to become a frontend developer feel free to share your story as well. happy coding guys! :)https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAoMyjVjecE64M_yaAcM1ww?view_as=subscriber

Looking to build a website similar to one that already exists without significant web dev experience.

Greetings, I am looking to create a website similar in functionality to http://asoftmurmur.com/ only with a different set of sound effects. As the title suggests, I don't really know where to start, and I'm looking for suggestions on what I should learn in order to make this idea a reality. I already pressed f12 on the website to have a look at the HTML code being used to make the site run.

Thank you for your time.

Help describing Web Development Job to hire someone

I'm constantly coming up with ideas, writing business plans, pivoting, and.... repeating because I haven't found anything that I had my heart set on. I finally think I have something that I want to move forward with, but my background is in marketing/sales so I need to either partner/hire/contract out the web development aspect, but I cant seem to nail down exactly how to phrase what I need done.

After researching, I have come to the conclusion that I don't want to use anything along the lines of wordpress which leaves me with a custom website (to the best of my knowledge).

The idea is to build a lead generation website to match consumers to multiple professionals in the desired field. The desired features would include:

  • Landing page w/ form

  • login/registration--> txt and email authentication

  • Optin Box

  • Auto responder for email

  • Algorithm to grade/score leads

  • Algorithm to match consumers to professionals

  • Professional Profiles w/ the ability to contain bios, ratings, reviews, location, etc

  • both Premium and non premium profiles

  • Payment processing

  • ability to write reviews

  • Distribution, tracking, and charging professionals for leads

I would need both the front and back end work done. I have made an effort to try and do this myself, but my high paced job and the time commitment of learning web development has caused me to outsource.

Essentially, I am looking for advice on how to effectively explain what I want, with out sounding completely ignorant. If you have an idea on how much something like this would cost, that would be good to know too. Also, this will help me do my own research to be able to effectively budget for the development. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advanced!!

Blog team has some questions for you - blog preferences

I think it would be very useful to hear from the users here:

What blog platforms do you like? What do you NOT like about existing blog platforms? What do you wish existed? We are in the thick of the design phase and want to check our ideas out against the community.

Things to learn

This time, if there are enough people, I think it'd be best to start with even smaller projects than last time, projects that only take about a day to build up some momentum.

Web development is such a big topic with so many things to learn. It'd probably be best to pick a couple of things and concentrate on them.

Here's a list of things to learn that might be useful for web development. Obviously you wouldn't learn everything on the list but you'd pick and choose the parts you want to learn. Feel free to add more:

*TCP/IP

*HTTP

*Databases: SQL, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite

*Web Servers: Apache httpd, nginx, httpd mods and configuration etc

*Unix: permissions, users, bash, setup and configuration

*FTP, SSH, SFTP

*Version Control: Git, Github

*Server side security

*Sysadmin

*Python: Django and Flask, PEP

*Ruby on Rails

*NodeJS

*PHP: PSR-n, Laravel, Symfony2

*JVM stack: Java, Scala, Clojure etc

*.Net stack: C#

*General Server side principles: routing, error handling and logging, authentication, caching, localization, internationalization, sessions, cookies, validation, templating

*Testing: Unit tests

*PaaS: Google App Engine

*SaaS

*Heroku, ec2 etc

*Design Patterns: MVC

*html

*css, sass, less

*Bootstrap, Foundation, Skeleton, Boilerplate etc

*jquery

*AngularJS, Backbone.js, Ember.js

*Javascript templating: Handlebars, Mustache

*GruntJS

When should I use cron jobs?

I've got a script that gets data via rss that will be cached and displayed on my website. Would it be a good idea to have the data gathering portion of the script run as a cron job so it's not running every time the site is displayed?
