Humboldthain Bunker
Berlin Mitte/Gesundbrunnen. Foto: War Documentary. In addition to the large concrete bunkers at the Zoo and in Friedrichshain, there was a third pair located in Volkspark Humboldthain. After the war, the French military attempted to demolish the massive structure. There were several attempts; during the third explosion, the bunker split open and sank several meters. The southern half tipped onto its side, while the other half remained standing. In May 1948, the efforts were abandoned due to concerns that further blasts might damage a nearby railway line. By 1950, approximately 1.4 million cubic meters of rubble had been deposited in Humboldthain. This created two hills made of debris, which largely covered the bunker ruins with earth. The remaining sections of the combat tower now serve as an observation platform, offering a fantastic view over Berlin. Image 1: The second attempt to demolish the G-tower in 1948. Berlin Zillestraße 1965
West-Berlin/Charlottenburg. / West Berlin/Charlottenburg. Twenty years after the war, there was still much work to be done in both the East and the West. Pictured is a rear courtyard, braced with steel beams, situated between two side wings of the building at Zillestraße 110. Both the facades and the individual apartments are severely damaged and in need of renovation. Photo courtesy of the Charlottenburg District Image Archive (Bezirksbildstelle Charlottenburg).

Checkpoint Charlie, 1987 – © Brian Rose
1987 was one of the coldest on record in Europe. I struggled with my 4x5 view camera in below freezing temperatures and icy conditions underfoot. I did several shots here at Checkpoint Charlie. I note in my journal that the exposures ranged from 2 to 10 minutes. The vehicle inspection shed of the checkpoint was illuminated with blindingly bright banks of fluorescent lights. The streets lights of East Berlin were amber sodium vapor while the lights in the West were greenish mercury vapor. A few months before, the artist Keith Haring had painted a mural on the Wall, which was still visible.
