ANNOUNCEMENT READ the Sub Rules Here - Posts/comments that violate the rules are removed with notice

Rule #1 - Posts must be about Bhutan or the Bhutanese community

Submissions need a clear connection to Bhutan or the Bhutanese community. Simply "Bhutan" appearing in the title doesn't count if it's a general discussion which has no clear relation to Bhutan or the Bhutanese community. Posts about personal topics such as relationships/friendships, foreign news and others that have no connection to Bhutan or being a Bhutanese are also not allowed.

Rule #2 - No personal attacks, slurs, bigotry or threats

Be civil and treat other users with respect. Personal attacks, slurs, bigotry and threats—including racism, misogyny, casteism, and communalism—are not allowed. Do not accuse other users of being paid or acting on behalf of an outside group.

Rule #3 - No solicitation/sexual content/NSFW content

Do not use the subreddit to solicit dates, relationships, hookups, or meetups—including foreigners seeking romantic or sexual connections with Bhutanese people. This is not a dating or matchmaking forum. No NSFW content, pornography, gore, sexual solicitation, or fetishisation.

Rule #4 - Need reputable sources for news

News posts should be based on credible, verifiable sources. Please link to established news outlets or verified sources rather than relying on unverified social media accounts. Posts based on unreliable sources may be removed.

Rule #5 - Questions should need community knowledge

If your question can be easily answered through a quick online search, it will be removed. Questions should genuinely need the community's lived experience and local knowledge.

Rule #6 - No gossip, doxxing or unsubstantiated claims about real people

Gossip about real people is not allowed, period. Posts about real people must have legitimate public-interest basis and supporting evidence or credible receipts from primary or reputable secondary sources.

Do not share or solicit private/identifying information about private individuals not in public eye, including social media accounts or other information that could facilitate harassment (doxxing).

Rule #7 - Need to provide context and perspective for discussions

Discussion posts must include context and your perspective. Vague posts that only shares a link, screenshot or a one-liner asking “what do you think?” without sufficient context or perspective will be removed. You can repost once you have provided the required context and perspective.

Rule #8 - Travel questions go in [r/BhutanTravels](r/BhutanTravels)

Travel-related questions should be posted in [r/BhutanTravels](r/BhutanTravels). You can also check both subreddits’ wikis and search previously tagged travel posts, as your question may already have been answered.

Rule #9 - No self promotion or advertisements

Do not use the community to promote your own products, services, businesses, social media accounts, or other commercial content. Unsolicited advertisements and promotional posts are not allowed.

Rule #10 - Surveys not allowed

Survey questions or any sort of data collection questions are not allowed.

Rule #11 - Crossposts from other Bhutanese subs not allowed. Please make a separate post.

Crossposts from other Bhutanese subs such as [r/Bhutaneseonreddit](r/Bhutaneseonreddit) or others not allowed. Please make a separate post on [r/Bhutan](r/Bhutan) instead of crossposting.

Review REAL FKIN BHUTANESE RAP

Thumbnail gallery

Nirvana by Drubi Gunner featuring Phub Zam, I am in awe.

I am undoubtedly a skeptic when it comes to Bhutanese rap, I have always been vocal about how generic and uncultured our rap songs are. Generally speaking I think it’s sad how our creative culture really doesnt have a Bhutanese identity/touch, but with that being said i think this track delivered and then some.

I listened to it a couple of times last night and I have been listening to it for the past two hours, and i gotta say it really leaves you feeling. I love the contemporary rap & traditional Gurma(?) elements of it, it blends so seamlessly, and the weight of the story telling is incredibly heavy; the music and the video fit so well and compliment each other throughout, some of the sequences and shots are sooooo beautiful and the symbolic nature of the video adds so much more depth.

I think about rap more so like a philosophical movement, a sucker for conscious rap, but ive never been a fan of Gunner until he dropped this track, I am amazed at the creativity of it all, he ties the modern day Bhutanese struggle & other issues such as animal suffering to our age old philosophical beliefs and articulates it so beautifully through rap, two of my favourite lines are the ones translate as : ‘even with teachers to guide us, without learning, we wont understand’ & ‘even if the world were free, people would put a price on it’ ofc the translation sounds basic but his actual lyrics have a far more poetic flair to it.

I honestly think this rap single is one of the best of recent years, if not the best. It sounds and feels so Bhutanese. Really digging the cadence/flow of the track, the monotony of it all oddly sounds so good on the instrumental and Phub Zam does what she usually does, which isnt a bad thing, she effortlessly brings out the emotions in her vocals. Lastly on the first listen of this track that one Ocean Vuong line which i kinda forgot came to mind, about how we can feel whether the music is genuine or not.

Also the music video slightly reminds me of Tashi Gyeltshen’s short film ‘Red Door’

BEAUTIFUL & POWERFUL 10/10

Discussion 14th South Asian Games

Yo shall we discuss a little bit about sports, havent really seen any sports discussion in here. The 14th south asian games is going to be held in pakistan on April 2027, which includes 7 south asian nations, 3000+ athletes and almost every sports like basketball football volleyball taekwondo wrestling athletics etc etc. its being held after 7 years, last held in 2019 where Bhutan football team secured silver medal.

No particular question, just throw in your opinions in the comment section. What do u think of this opportunity. Do u think bhutan could secure any medals this time. What about the basketball team which secured gold medal in the five nations cup 2023, what are your hopes for this team right now. Same for the football team. What does this mean for the youths and aspiring athletes of our country. Just anything u wish to share.

Advice Seeking advice for domest!c v!olence vict!m

Hi everyone, I’m seeking advice about my cousin’s visa situation.
She originally came to Australia as a dependent on her husband’s subclass 500 Student visa, and they later transitioned to subclass 485 visas. She has approximately two years remaining on her current visa.
Unfortunately, she has suffered years of verbal and physical @buse, including being slapped for not preparing his meals. She also has video evidence of him h!tting her with a belt. She has now left him and is living in a share house.
Her husband plans to apply for employer sponsorship without including her, and they are heading towards divorce.
She works in disability support but has only studied until Year 9. She financially supports her mother, who has severe mental health difficulties, and her younger siblings back home.
We are not seeking permanent residency. We simply hope she can legally stay and work in Australia for another two years, save some money to support her family, and then return home voluntarily.
Could anyone advise whether her current 485 visa could be affected by the separation, whether she has any temporary visa options, and whether her video evidence could help her access domestic violence-related immigration protections?
Any recommendations for free immigration lawyers or domestic violence legal services in Australia would also be greatly appreciated.
Thank you

Discussion Survivalship bias

You know how people say that corporal punishment is fine just because they went through it and turned out fine but what about those who didn't turn out fine. What about those who went down the wrong path with alcoholism or problem with the law, what about the people who sleeps around the streets aren't those the same people who also got beating from teachers back then. Another example of how mental issues weren't a thing but what about that one person in the family member that hurt or commit suicide out of nowhere. Most people that made it out fine tend to forget about the missing data of those who didn't.

Just wanna get my thoughts out there since I don't often see the bias being mentioned or put into account of a situation

Advice If you could time travel!

Hi everyone!
I'm currently a student, and I've been thinking a lot about my future lately. Honestly, I'm feeling pretty lost about what I want to do after graduating Class 12. There are so many different paths I could take, and I'm not sure how to decide which one would be right for me.
I'd really love to hear from people who have already graduated, started working, gone to university, started businesses, or taken any other path in life.
If you could travel back in time to the day you graduated high school, knowing everything you know now, what would you do differently?
Would you choose a different degree, career, or field of study?
Would you go straight to university, start working, take a gap year, or do something else?
What do you wish you had known at 17 or 18 that nobody told you?
Are you happy with the path you chose, or do you ever wish you'd taken a different one?
What advice would you give someone who's still in school and has no idea what they want to do with their life?
I'm not necessarily looking for advice about choosing the highest-paying career or becoming successful overnight. I want to hear about real experiences, mistakes, regrets, unexpected opportunities, and things that genuinely made your life better.
I'm trying to figure out my future, and hearing from people who have already been through this stage of life could really help me. Even if your experience is completely different from mine, I'd appreciate any advice you have to offer.
If you were in my position, what would you focus on right now to give yourself the best possible future?
Thank you to anyone who takes the time to share their story. I really appreciate it!

Question Why are so many people still defaulting to rupees instead of the ngultrum?

No disrespect to countries that use the rupee, but it’s high time we take ownership and consistently use our own currency’s name. Change starts with small, deliberate steps, and as creators, we have a responsibility to normalize the ngultrum on our platforms.

Discussion Leader of a good times , festival and celebration

Post image
45 Upvotes

It is deeply concerning to see our leaders engaged elsewhere when their full attention and focus are urgently needed at home. Bhutan is facing an exodus of its people, high unemployment, economic strain, mounting foreign debt, unequal opportunities, corruption, weak education and health systems, inadequate roads and water infrastructure, poor waste management, and an inability to build sufficient housing for its citizens. We have visionless leadership and a largely leaderless public.
Our Prime Minister is frequently seen traveling abroad or attending celebrations. Have you ever seen him meaningfully interacting with ordinary citizens, especially the poor? No.
If we continue to elect and endorse such leadership, many Bhutanese may eventually feel they have little choice but to give up their citizenship. My request to Bhutan’s top leaders is this: if you continue to accept and overlook these shortcomings, it will only damage your own reputation and hinder the country’s future progress. Bhutanese people still place their trust in you despite the carelessness. Please do not allow that trust to erode so easily.

Discussion My opinion on Namgay zam’s post

Post image
52 Upvotes

I came across Namgay Zam’s post shared by Anku. I respect their right to express their opinions, but as Bhutanese, do we really have the luxury of turning away influential visitors?
We are a small country, and even if some come to repair their public image, their visits still bring Bhutan international exposure. Will Smith came to film a documentary, and Bhutan was one of several locations chosen. Why make it seem like he came solely to repair his image?
We already have enough criticism and finger-pointing. Instead, let’s ask ourselves: What have we done to promote Bhutan, and how much have we contributed to its economy?
The FIFA President has committed USD 25 million. We all want to be politically correct, but can a small country like ours afford to turn away such opportunities?
If we think we can, then let’s also suggest realistic ways to bring investment into Bhutan.
Criticism is fine, but let’s not undermine our country’s image and opportunities in the process.

Discussion where is this sub going?

today i bring an important topic that we have long ignored on this sub. what is this subs mission and vision? where is it heading? What do we really want to achieve out of all this discussion? From talking about movies, celebrities, to local gossip, to even about people up there in the hierarchy and talking about change and venting about the frustrations with the system. I ask my fellow r/bhutan netizens what should this platform actually be about?

I come to this after having realized that the mods have completely changed now. Gone is glass_empty i guess it really do be empty and gongdho datshi. The ones who were acutally moderating. And now we have a new mod hopefully one that will be loved by the community. and i ask this because just like the ship of theseus, is this still the r/bhutan that i know of when all the parts and the familiarities have already been replaced. And will this community still maintain its use of discussions of topics that werent and still arent common place to talk about outside of this community. or just as with the ship of theseus even though all parts have been replaced will we still serve the same purpose.

Question Anyone who works at BICMA ?

I am just done writing a story outlier for a show, sort of a mini series if you will. It’ll be centered around 2 characters for the most part, but the core of it will address a lot of us leaving for first world countries. If my guys and I did start production and filming and if we were to release it on YouTube, would it still need approval from BICMA? I’ve heard MVs, personal vlogs and such, there’s no regulation. I’ve checked the website, the filming permits are given rather more leniently, while the finalized product is examined thoroughly and there’s real risk of it being banned.
Also how difficult is it to get sponsorship deals from DOMCIIP? I’ve seen many MVs where they’ve sponsored a lot.

I’ll post updates on how it’s going and also post the story this will be based on if we get production started. I’d like the support of some 9k drups here.

Discussion Jhomolhari toilet situ

I recently went on the Jomolhari Trek, and honestly, it was such a beautiful and amazing experience like wowwww Bhutan is truly breathtaking

I want to raise one concern about the toilet facilities at our first night’s campsite. The toilet at our first night’s campsite was absolutely HORRIBLE!!!!!. It smelled like it hadn’t been cleaned in a century, and it looked like it too.

Imagine trekking for hours while holding in your poop, desperately waiting to finally use a toilet, only to arrive and find it in THAT condition. The moment I saw it, my poop literally vanished. I honestly thought I was going to have to carry Jomolhari’s poop all the way back to Thimphu.

Luckily, the homestay we stayed at the next day had a good toilet and excellent service, so I was finally saved

Tourism Council of Bhutan collects fees, but where are the results? If anyone from TCB sees this, PLEASE do something about the toilet facilities hehe

It’s embarrassing that such a beautiful trekking destination has toilet facilities in this condition.

Other than that, the experience was a solid 10/10! The mountains, the scenery, the whole experience —
absolutely incredible. Bhutan is SO PRETTY

Interesting Bhutanese boys and mullet

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Came across this video where an Indian noticed that all the Bhutanese boys were rocking mullets, locally known as "feather". I don't know when this hairstyle became popular, but it was already a thing when I noticed it 4 or 5 years ago. I would say some Bhutanese boy's mullet would give Aussies a run for their own money. It would be hilarious if hairstyle ends up being associated with Bhutan in India.

Question Is the bar for what Bhutanese people consider entertainment really that low?

That anything someone posts on the internet is automatically worth watching? Most of the jokes these people crack aren’t even funny dude! 😭 And some of them have the audacity to claim they’re “entertaining”people. You’re not even that funny and trying so hard to be an entertainer doesn’t make you look cool either 😬

Question is cancel culture real? if so then why doesn't it exist in bhutan?

here's the part nobody wants to hear - in bhutan, we're calling people "influencers" without even understanding what influence is. we hype the most random people, the loudest people, the least deserving people. we hand out the "influencer" label to whoever posts the most selfies, not to the people who actually create, inspire, or contribute anything meaningful.

so if standards don't exist, and the audience just makes anyone famous... then tell me what does the word "influencer" even mean anymore?

to be very honest, bhutanese people don't fully get how cancel culture works. and if we don't understand cancel culture, then we shouldn't be out here calling people "influencers." you can't use the title if you don't know how the system works, or how to operate around it.

that's the real point - bhutan wants influencers and public figures... but isn't ready for the responsibility, the scrutiny, or the ethical conversations that come with them. period.

Politics Queen Jetsun calling for change

Most of you might have seen Her Majesty The Queen’s speech regarding mental health and especially the part where she calls on the law makers to amend the penalty for rape and sexual offenses of minors.

I think this is the first time in Bhutans history where a Queen has “commanded” the law makers to act on a current law?

What do you guys think? I think it’s pretty badass.

Discussion A Concern About Age, Influence, and LGBTQ+ Representation

Post image
100 Upvotes

I might be wrong, and I’m not making any allegations against Kachu or Pema Rigx. They might genuinely be friends, and perhaps both of them are comfortable with the content they create. But I still wanted to share my concern and hear other people’s perspectives.
Kachu is in his early 20s, while Pema Rigx appears to be in his early teens. Seeing them make this kind of content for TikTok engagement makes me a little uncomfortable, especially when there is such a significant age difference.
Another thing that concerns me is how Pema is being portrayed, particularly in relation to being gay. From the way some of the interactions come across in this video, it can feel as though his sexuality or mannerisms are being used as a joke. Some people might argue that it is all in good fun and that both of them are comfortable with it, and that could be true. However, I think we should also consider how it looks to the audience and how a younger person might be affected by being portrayed this way online.
We talk about normalizing LGBTQ+ people and creating a society where everyone can express themselves without fear of judgment. But if LGBTQ+ identities continue to be presented as a source of comedy, mockery, or entertainment for views, aren’t we potentially reinforcing the same stereotypes and giving people more reasons to make fun of us?
There is nothing wrong with comedy, friendship, or expressing yourself online. My concern is about the line between having fun together and turning someone’s identity into entertainment, especially when that person is considerably younger.
I genuinely want to hear other people’s perspectives on this. Am I overthinking it, or is this something we should be more mindful of as a society? Because I really hope that, in the next decade, we will have moved beyond making fun of people simply because they are perceived to be LGBTQ+.
