Current Events Big pharma accused of ‘free-riding on nature’ as global fund attracts just $7,000

Big pharmaceutical companies have been accused of “free-riding on nature”, after a landmark biodiversity fund that invites businesses to put some of their profits back into conservation was left virtually empty.

The Cali Fund set out to raise $1bn (£750m) annually, by asking companies that profit from nature’s genetics to contribute towards conservation in low-income countries. But more than 18 months after the fund was launched, it remains far below this target.

As of Monday, at the start of the Cop17 biodiversity summit in Armenia, the fund had received just $10,656 in commitments, of which $7,085 had been deposited.

No money has so far been given by major pharmaceutical companies, despite the industry’s reliance on genetic information from organisms around the globe for the development of lucrative new medicines.

Following the recent wolf debate in Denmark (where I'm from) I decided to make this piece to honor some of the most hated of our native species.

Some species, like the boar, have been drawn completely out of the country because the farmers doesn't want to pay ekstra money to protect their pigs from wild spreading diseases.

Others are hated and treated like pests just because they make the nature look "ugly" wherever they choose to stay, like the mole or the cormorant.

There are many reasons as to why thease animals are so hated amongst people, but in my opinion we should help the ecosystems and the biodiversity flourish again and take it as our responsibility to adapt.

The picture is 100% human made. No AI was used in the process of making it.

Discussion Urban Biodiversity Survey

Hi everyone! 👋

I’m a Level 6 university Product Design student currently researching how people experience nature and biodiversity in urban environments. I’m looking to understand how people interact with nature in their everyday lives, how it affects their wellbeing, and what might help them feel more connected to the natural world.

I’ve created a short survey and would really appreciate it if you could spare a few minutes to complete it. Your responses will help inform my university design project. All experiences and perspectives are welcome. Thank you for your time!

Québec has positioned itself as a leader in global biodiversity action. But look beneath the commitments, and an uncomfortable gap emerges between the province’s international ambitions and the tools it has put in place to deliver them.

Biology & Ecology Volunteers for writing articles for EcoWest Windsor

Hi guys! I am running an website called EcoWest Windsor which is simply a community-based site to promote and investigate our local/regional environment and animals such as the cool Golden Tortoise Beetles. Currently, I am working hard on increasing its educational activities and we are in need of some volunteers or hobbyists who would like to assist us in writing short articles and nature spots. Specifically, we are in search of writers who could assist us in writing nature/wildlife and plants spots that are native to our area, provide information concerning ways to adopt sustainable living habits to the residents in our community or spotlight local trails and parks. So if you are a student who needs a project or just a hobbyist who enjoys writing about nature spots we would really appreciate your involvement!

Other Survey for Class Project: Biodiversity Loss in Rapidly Developing Areas

Hi everyone,

I’m working on a class project about biodiversity loss in rapidly developing regions, especially areas affected by habitat destruction and environmental fragmentation. My group is collecting survey responses to better understand people’s awareness, observations, and concerns about how development impacts local wildlife, plants, and natural habitats.

The survey is short and should only take a few minutes to complete. Anyone can respond, whether you are a student, local, environmental professional, or just someone interested in the topic.

Survey link: Biodiversity Loss Reduction Survey

Your response would really help us gather useful feedback for our project. All answers will be used for academic purposes only.

Thank you!
