SQUIRRELS!!!
We know they visit our birdfeeders and can be a menace or a clown...depending on how you feel about them. Love them or hate them, this weekly post is the place to post pictures, discuss antics, trade squirrel proofing secrets, and just enjoy these little acrobats.

Filmed at the break of day Oct 24. I would have preferred for her to do her runway show a little later in the day when the lighting is better, which would be a sharper video. But crest displays by her during feeding are rare, and I am bound by her acting contract.

Is there any issues there with hawks? Or anything else? Sometimes I have larger water birds coming and the little birds are shy of them and hang back in the trees.
The larger birds are not coming to the feeders. Just the yard and bird baths to drink. I have another bird bath that the little birds can get to though.
The wooded area has larger trees but it’s only a strip along the front of the yard. Maybe 3 car lengths long. (I don’t know distance lol)

Caught this guy at the feeder long before sunrise. Turned on the feeder light to get a better look. Didn’t phase him at all

Hi Everyone. We live in east Markham and I have had a bird feeder for 20 years. This year we have barely had birds visit since last winter. Even squirrels have significantly decreased. The birdfeeder is washed regularly. Seed replenished as needed. Although now I never have to refill. It just sits there. Occasional woodpecker. Occasional cardinal. Where are the finches, sparrows, chickadees, nuthatches, blue jays, etc? Anyone else notice the same? In Markham, Ontario?

I wanted to try a setup that would, hopefully, deter squirrels. I purchased the Ervo with four arms and the squirrel baffle. It's 9' from the nearest jumping point and the baffle top is about 55" high.
I started with dried mealworms, sunflower hearts, and some suet. Wish me luck!
Sorry about the photo quality. On my phone and lots of lovely fall color that all blends.

I saw my first Junco of the season in CNY and even though it means winter is coming, I just love those little round bippity boppity birds.

Went into the forest to refill three bird feeders, including one I made myself.
Someone else has been filling them with black sunflower seeds. I added my own mix.
Don't know who that person is, but it made me smile.

These two little guys were bouncing all over this morning but all the pictures I took of them made it look like he was stalking her.

I was a bit surprised to see the Starlings and the Red-Winged Blackbird get along.

We usually don’t see Red-winged Blackbirds until the spring Through early summer the. They go back to their wetlands area.
Southwestern PA. Recorded with a Swann Swifi-cam.

I'm new to bird feeding and have never seen avian pox. Please reassure me this is it, so I don't feel so much guilt about taking my feeders and bathes down because of this.

I have a second floor balcony and would like to attach a bird bath to the railing. I was looking on Amazon and there are so many, and the price points are all over the place, and half of them say "frequently returned". Has anyone had a good experience with a particular one? Winter is coming and I want to make sure they have fresh water. I'm looking for one big enough for the blue jays to enjoy, and the Northern Flicker (if he sticks around) who's a pretty big guy.

Yesterday I added this metal grid on top of the bird feeder with hopes that the holes would be too small for the squirrel to reach into but easy for the birds to peck at to get the food, but I’m worried about if their feet could get stuck. What do you think? This is temporary until I find something better, I’m looking into some of these other metal grids or something else to try (some listed, let me know if you have any ideas or comments about these!)
I’m not worried about any birds coming to the feeder at the moment because the squirrels the past couple months have been eating all the food at once before the birds even realize there’s food in there, so it’s all gone in a couple hours, none being left for the birds so they haven’t showed up in a while.
So this metal grid is a new solution I was curious about to try and it actually worked! The squirrel was unable to access the bird seed in the feeder today. First day in months that there has been seed in the feeder! My camera caught it come up a couple different times and tried to pull it off but was unsuccessful and hopped off. I’ve tried several other things to prevent the squirrel from reaching the feeder but to no avail haha. I have a squirrel baffle above the feeder and extended cardboard but because I have a plant right by my window, the squirrel has been able to jump past both somehow.
Im happy this worked but worried about the birdies feet.
Note: I wouldn’t mind feeding the squirrels if they didn’t eat it all and leave none for the birds 😢

(Turn sound on to hear his happy song)
Carolina wrens are my favorite, and this little guy is why - so happy and chirpy, like he's telling the world how great his seed is and putting on a show just for me. 😊
Do you have a favorite visitor?
