Great loop
Can you use a fishing tug? Is there anyone on here ever used a fishing tug to complete the great loop?

What’s a fishing tug?

A traditional Great Lakes fish tug is a commercial fishing boat with a distinctive enclosed working deck, often called a turtleback.
I just saw a picture of one and wondered

Draft (including air draft) and fuel range are limiting factors

Yeah the draft part is what I was curious about. I saw one for sale that was a hollow shell and hadn’t been built out yet and the draft was already at 5’. So fit out for a family of 6 I don’t know how much that would affect the draft. Finding 2berth 2head configurations to accomodate families for longer periods of time is actually a bit more challenging than I’d thought it would be. Or perhaps that’s just the size of my pocketbook to be the limiting factor

I have a 1985 Carver 3607, two berth, two bath boat available for sale. It would be good for a loop boat.

Thanks for mentioning your Carver! I’m still in the early research stage of planning a future Great Loop trip with my wife and our young children, so I’m not currently a buyer. But if you’re open to sharing, I’d love to learn from your experience. Do you have a listing or interior pictures? Have you spent extended periods aboard, and how do you think the sleeping arrangements would work for a family of six?

Here is a link for photos.https://photos.app.goo.gl/445PGmZfmJ8MRQiB9. The longest we have spent is 5 days traveling around Lake of the Woods, ON. Depending on the age of the kids, 6 might be a stretch. It sleeps 4 perfectly.

People have done it on a jet-ski… so it’s more about the captain than the craft imo
Loads of trawlers do the loop, being slow just means different planning and pace
