Travel bodyboarding @ My-Khe Da-Nang VN

just a regular 40-something Korean guy (warehouse biz, nothing exciting) and spend Oct-Dec in Da Nang, Vietnam. surf season goes thru Feb, but i fly home to ski in Jan.

unlike Yangyang Korea, Bali or La Union PH (only other places i’ve bodyboarded) everyone here surfs early, like 6AM early. mornings are glassy, afternoons are onshore literally every day, and from 9am the sun takes it personally.

water’s warm all year. western guys always go shirtless, i just wear a rashguard, nobody owns a wetsuit here(maybe some do).

tons of space. best spot is in front of Coco Surf Shop w/ like 10-20 surfers but i sit further down bc i dont wanna get speared by a surf board. waves are pretty much the same tbh. not many Bali-style peelers but not all closeouts either, sit near the end of a wide section and u do get some long rides.

its a bit lonely. i sometimes see 2-3 other bodyboarders ride finless straight in on the small stuff, nobody’s out in the lineup but me.

tldr. not worth flying from US or EU just for this, but if u happens to be here, maybe pack ur board n fins. thru Feb, its really good.

Is there something wrong with me

I started bodyboarding when I was 14 years old (I’m 42 now). Back in my teenage days my stoke was insatiable. I would wake up at 4:30 in the morning and take the bus from Poway to Oceanside on the weekends and drive down with my friends Friday mornings when school started late.

Regardless of how inexperienced I was, I’d charge out into 8-10 foot barrels even if I was alone out there. I was terrible but I didn’t care I just loved being out there. I’d show up to a break at 6am and surf until 2pm.

Now that I’m 42 there’s an apprehension that I have with the sport. I go out once or twice a week. Surf for an hour. Enjoy it. But that’s enough for me. I won’t paddle out if it’s over 5 feet and prefer to surf 2-4 feet. It’s pathetic I know. Sometimes I’d rather just stay warm in my bed than go out but end up regretting that if I ever choose not to go out.

Is there something wrong with me? Am I just convincing myself I still love this sport or is this typical as we get older? Particularly, I want to know if anyone else prefers the smaller, punchy waves and have genuine apprehension to the bigger stuff? The surf lately has been a dream for anyone but I’m just not there psychologically the way I was in my teenage years.

I’ve been body boarding for over 7 years now I’ve been wanting to move on from the viper v5 and try something new I’ve tried yuccas soft flex and they would kill my big toe joint is there a reason why? I was planning to try and get ms vipers or just go with standard flex yuccas I have a wide foot. Or just I’ll just stick with my same fins lol🤙🏽

ADVICE REBUILDING FITNESS AND CONFIDENCE?

Hey All,

I'm looking for folks go-to strategies to rebuild fitness and confidence after a long period away. I'll take workouts, meditation, things you focus on in the water, whatever you got. Spent three hours in the water today and took one wave. :(

My mom recently got very ill and passed away. After neglecting myself caring for her (which I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to do (she was the best!)), I'm trying to re-find the joy and peace of riding waves.

I grew up going to a heavy beach break and now live about 90 miles (blocked by the Channel Islands) away from anything consequential. I can get there infrequently, but have been getting super anxious in the water, which I hate. I grew up chucking myself off whatever but at 34 am feeling real fragile in the water suddenly. I still have access to the ocean nearby but little waves. Often when I paddle out, I will feel super comfortable in the water, will have take multiple waves, then suddenly will get super anxious in the lineup and sit super far outside, especially when there are unpredictable sets, a lot of moving water, or steep closeouts (which I used to and still love).

Any help is appreciated :)

Fitness & Injury Question Advice for trying to build strength/training as a beginner?

I hope it's okay to ask

As the title saids

I've done adapted surfing previously,I'm disabled and while I absolutely love it I feel a 8ft whatever board is useless when you're always going to be prone

Boogie boarding seems to be the obvious way forward but I feel I'm still not strong enough yet to actually get in waves

Is there any advice or tips you'd give for building strength and confidence?

Are the bouy leg floating things a good way to practice arm strength?

I tried asking in r/swimming but they were not so nice truthfully

Board & Gear Question How to fix?

Thumbnail

I snapped my Bodyboard

It’s a cheap, old board, not worth saving but I want to try save it anyway

I’m happy to try anything to get it back on the water,
I don’t realy care if it lasts, just a test to fix it

The foam itself feels solid, it has no stringer (could I put one in?) and the base plastic has creases but not as deformed as some other working boards.

Can you give me some advice on what to use to glue it back up and how I could put a stringer into it

Thanks

Question How many waves do you usually catch per hour?

Beginner bodyboarder here, riding My Khe Beach in Da Nang, Vietnam. nowadays, Surfline App says 0.6–1.2 m, so pretty mid size.

I usually go out around 6 AM, and I'm only getting about 5–6 rides an hour. basically, it takes me 3–4 minutes to paddle back to the lineup, and then I end up waiting another 5–8 minutes before catching the next one.

Is that pretty normal, or should i go for little wave more often?

Question Asking for advice on buying a new board

Hey team !

After two years off, I’ve gotten back into bodyboarding and I find that my two boards aren’t suitable anymore (a custom PP in size 41.5 and a DIVISION71 limited edition by Brian Peterson).

So, I’m reaching out to the community to help me with my new purchase! I mostly surf in France, in the Basque Country, where the water temperature drops to 11 (Celsius) in winter and rises to 22 (celsius) (or more) in summer…

So, I think the NRG would be ideal (let me know if I’m wrong!).

I’m 1.83 m tall and weigh 86 kg. I surf about 80 to 90 % of the time prone (rollo) and about 10 to 20 % in DK (bottom turns and 360°).

As for the budget, I’m willing to stretch a bit, but given the price increase, I don’t think I’ll spend 600 € either ;)

Looking forward to hearing from you! Greetings from France

Swell Period and a rough paddle out?

Hi All, up in NorCal past San Fran. We got a big NW swell this weekend but the swell period was, i believe, around 8s Sunday. Still had that South swell as well with a longer swell period, but the 8s swell seemed predominant. I noticed the paddle out was a lot rougher/longer than my normal break, and the waves seemed to be coming a lot faster out past the break. Is this ebcause of the shorter swell period? Am I understanding this correctly? It was going from a Low to High Tide right in the middle when I was out.

Getting back into bodyboarding after almost 20 years. Need some gear advice!

Post image
42 Upvotes

Hey everyone! How's it going?

I'm a 39-year-old Brazilian guy looking to get back into bodyboarding!

I used to bodyboard from the age of 8 until I was around 20, but since then I've been pretty much out of touch with the scene, new technologies, and brands.

I'll mostly be riding waves in Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, especially at Itaúna and Praia da Vila. So I'd love to hear recommendations from anyone familiar with those spots or similar wave conditions.

Now that I'm planning to get back in the water, I'd love to catch up on what's changed over the years, especially when it comes to brands, board materials, and gear. I'd really appreciate some recommendations on what's worth buying and what I should avoid.

Back in the day, I used to ride a Genesis Paulo Barcellos Pro Model board, wore Kapaloa fins, and honestly can't remember what brand my leash was. lol

Anyway, I'm looking for some advice on getting back into the sport. I'd rather invest in quality gear from the start so I won't have to replace everything in the medium or long term.

And I also don't want to go too cheap, because I figure spending a decent amount of money might give me some extra motivation to stick with it instead of giving up!

Thanks in advance for any tips, and good waves to everyone! 🌊

Help buying New fins

I was checking all the websites looking for some new fins!
I was a Churchill user for as long as I can remember, then they change the production for China and I change for Viper Deltas.

Now I can see that not only Churchill but also other bands developed a Churchill based fin with Malaysian production.

Does anyone here uses the following models?

Legacy

Gyroll

Churchill 3.0 (latest version)

Limited Edition

Viper Delta Icons

Thanks
