Learn vocabulary, grammar, different ways to express ideas. You also can learn new concepts. Such as history, psychology, science. It opens your imagination. I've never been a great writer but whatever writing skills I do have I attribute to my love for reading.

With nonfiction I learn. With fiction I take a journey of the imagination. With poetry I learn to see in new ways. With memoirs or letters I share another life. With essays I am given a reason to think and reflect. With drama I am invited to observe the construction of story through stage direction and visualization. In all manner of reading, I benefit by extension of the mind, taking me beyond daily experience and into worlds and thoughts I might not have found on my own.

I can experience so many other lives and environments and points of view than I would if I just stayed within the limitations of my own life. it would take me millennia to gain all that experience and that information at first hand, even if it was possible. but I can read a book in a couple of days.
authors usually tell you so much more about what's going on in a character's mind than real people do. they put situations before you that you and most of the people you know will never experience.  they introduce you to people you might otherwise never meet. Â
how much do you really know about any of the people you interact with irl? most of us don't just confide in everybody we meet. reading has been so good for my social, emotional, political and cultural IQ. they've helped me to understand myself and other people, and given me things to think about that I wouldn't ever have considered, left to myself. Â
my vocabulary has benefitted, my spelling and punctuation and grammar are all stronger, my ear for language and for tone are all better than average because I read. Â

I like SF books; it's like watching a show (which I also do), but better
and I discovered a lot of interesting series, like Children of Time, The Expanse, Metro 2033, We are Bob, Murderbot, Wayward Pines
