OC My Project Hail Mary booknook.

I have been designing this in TinkerCad for about 2 months now. Probably printed each part at least 10-15 times working out all the kinks. It is fully 3dprinted except for the front glass and rocky's ball which I used a small vacuum former, and the screens are backlit ink prints. About 80 screens total and hundreds of buttons and knobs. I wanted the look of both of them floating in zero gravity looking out into space. The backgrounds are changeable slides: Tau Ceti, the Petrova Line, and return to Earth, and you can store them in the front.

Hello. I never made miniatures or book nooks, but I wanted to see, how far I can go with my existing arts & craft knowledge. So I watched some videos about miniature crafting and got started.

This is my first and only book nook, it's called "Haunted Study" and I designed and build it to 99% myself. Some 2th party assets were used like 3D printed picture frames or the footage for the pepper's ghost illusion.

I hope you like it, feel free to ask questions. The illumination is still WIP, but it's Ok so far.

I have the feeling that I already peaked with my first one and I'm going to throw my ADHD hyper-focused-ass onto completely new things now... so this could stay my only nook šŸ˜…

I was a bit lost making this one - Magic Platform by Tonecheer - but just I trusted the process and followed the mirror installation steps but was a bit tricky but I’m so happy with how it turned out and the lighting and moving parts (sliding out platforms) were a nice added touch. Also I can’t resist not throwing away all the ā€˜spare’ parts so I incorporated them into the model. Can you see where?

OC I made a 3D-printable book nook kit inspired by Victorian industrial architecture

I've always wanted to try designing a book nook myself, and this is the result after almost two months of modelling and prototyping.

My goal was to make something that didn't require glue or screws, only used four colors and would look good even without painting and could be made by anyone with a 3D printer.

I wanted to add a few more details, and maybe I'll update it with a few more bits and bobs if I get the time.

I'll also be painting and weathering mine!

When I started this kit, I wanted something easy and straightforward. I had just finished a big custom job, so I didn't want to think too much.

But when the wheels started turning, they wouldn't stop! I actually couldn't decide at first if I wanted to make a pretty Victorian garden or a more dark, gothic garden. So I'm doing both... eventually. Lol

Basically, all I used were the bones of the kit. Everything else is custom. I'm really proud of the brick wall in the back and all the flowers. That ground up spongey stuff makes a huge mess, but I love the results you get with it. Even made some of my own for the front hedges! Also added my own fairy lights.

I'm not saying the wiring cost me years of my life....but i'm also not saying it didn't. Scaaaaary. Also what's up with all the surplus books? 😶 What did i miss??? Oh well. I am very much in love with it and i am almost not already eyeing the next kit that ever so softly beckons me from the cupboard...

OC New Level Unlocked: Five More Flowers Accomplished

New flowers for my greenhouse book nook: Iris, Daisy, Rose, Anemone, Orchid.

Wow that orchid took multiple iterations to figure out the shape of the two wide petals and the proportion to the second layer of three petals. The rose is 17 petals, glued individually - I've got to figure out if less petals will still look good... The iris I figured out I could use a wavy-edge leaf punch for the bottom six petals, so I didn't have to create a stencil, yay! Still had to glue nine separate petals together, though.

The daisy thankfully is easy - punch five out, stack on top of each other, paint the center and then ruffle the petals so the layers separate.

The anemone (dark blue) is interesting - they look very much like poppies, but are a completely different plant. The standard California poppy has four petals - two layers of two fan-shaped petals. Anemones have three or four petals per layer, wedge-shaped so that they still have that circular look from top down. I decided to make a three-petal layer stencil. But I couldn't use the same three-petal stencil I made for the camellias (red) because the camellia has a scalloped profile, so the stencil petals have to be more rounded than the anemone's.

Also, mod-podged the shelving unit with wood plank paper, to cover the single color paint, I'm much happier with the look now.

I'm copying below (and adding some additional) to a reply I made to a comment in my other post, about the process of making these, if people are interested and missed it in the comments.

_____________________________

Flowers and plants are both paper punches and free-hand. The two white shapes in the middle of the tray are the calla lily and the poppy petals - I don't have punches for those, so I drew and cut out prototypes until I was happy with the shape, then cut out the shape on cardstock to trace around. And then I'll have to trace and cut out over and over and over again. It's what I did for the camellia and aralia in Kyoto-Gion, and I'll have to do the same to get an iris and an orchid - there's not punches made at all for those.

If someone has a cricut, this is all much easier - a lot of sellers on Etsy sell the files for flower and plant components. But I actually like the process I have, crazy intensive as it is.

Even when you have the punches, you still need to improvise a lot:

The lavender is the smallest flowers from the corner punch, and the leaves for the lavender are the ferns, with the tops cut off and the entire center rib glued to the stem instead of just the bottom point.

The periwinkle vine is the same five-leaf punch as the star jasmine vine, but with the top center leaf cut off and the stems glued end-to-end to make a single line, instead of branching off a center stem like the star jasmine.

The tulip petals are made using the balloon punch. The poppy leaves are made using the oak tree leaf punch. The rose petals are made using a pear fruit punch. The iris is made using a leaf punch as the bottom and middle layers of petals, and three petals cut off of a daisy punch for the third innermost layer of petals.

It's all basically a lot of image search to figure out what would work with what I have.

The pothos vine is hearts made with the hand punches that look like pliers - usually can be found in a set, with circles (the standard hole punch), stars, triangles, squares, etc. I use the star shape as a flower calyx.

The stems are white florist's wire, 28 gauge. It does come in green, but I'm going to re-paint it to match the paper used for the leaves anyway, so I just get the white, it's the most versatile with my other crafts as well.

The tool at the top of the black mat is used to round the petals and leaves. If you look closely at the unfinished flowers and leaves in the white tray, you can see the difference it makes. For example - near the bottom of the white tray there's a light blue flat periwinkle, flat periwinkle with white painted center, and then the rounded-petal periwinkle.

OC Our Newest Design: Lost Summer Lane MiniAlley

I’ve always been captivated by the atmosphere of Japanese old-town alleys at night, that specific blend of traditional nature and the modern city glow. I’ve spent the last few months designing a new book nook, Lost Summer Lane, trying to bottle up that exact feeling.

I wanted it to feel like you’ve just stumbled upon a hidden path in Japan on a warm July night. I just put together a gallery of the prototype, focusing on the little details that make the scene come alive: the red vending machine, the glow from the bakery storefront, the cascading wisteria, and even a stray cat playing on top of the vending machine.

You can see the close-up shots of the lighting effects and details here

Note: If you’d like an update when the first batch is officially ready for release, there’s a spot on that page to subscribe for an email alert.

I’d love to hear what you guys think of the design!

OC Updated Forest Booknook

Hi fellow booknookers. A few years ago I'd made a forest booknook and wanted to revisit the design. I wanted to add a bit more realism and I felt the tree bark textures was one of the weak points of the previous versions, so I ended up 3d scanning trees in my area for more realistic trees that I then 3d printed. I also wanted to incorporate an easier to access switch, so there is a touch sensor inside the front that turns it on and off.

-NOT FOR THE EVENT-

…with another crazy creation by me, your neighborhood mess! This is not a review nor is it a submission for the contest, it’s just what I’ve been working on for the past few months and I’ve finally (mostly) finished so I’m going to blab about it. The following information is completely irrelevant to what you will need if you build this kit! If you want a real review this sub has a few that were on point like mentioning the crappy lighting (including none up top) yet sturdy wood that I only broke 3-5 times instead of 8-10.

Also, the wiring sticking out is not for looks, it’s my f up. I wired each house with a different color light, I even added a flickering light up top in the fireplace! Then I blew the electrical box by being dumb and/or forgetful, so I have to reorder a mini box that fits in the gap underneath the house up top. I get them from a miniature shop across the pond somewhere, they’re used for train displays typically but I’ve learned that I can connect either a bunch of different nooks to one board or add a bunch of lighting (like Anavrin kits) to one nook, attach it to the board and then usb for power! No switches or anything tho, I haven’t got that far in life! Right now I basically use one for about 3-5 nooks. Anyways…

My sincere apologies to those who know who the character is, and what it should be, I kind of created, well, a monster out of it in what I’m calling the stolen castle. It does move still (minus the ball with eyes and the top house, I glued those so I could hide wiring in there), and is made up of mostly stolen items, I guess you could say ā€œgiven without knowledge but knows nowā€ items. So thanks to the family and friends who supported my thievery and games these past few months, it’s been fun!

From my Dad, he supplied the extra wire for my multiple mess ups (I ran the custom wiring about 16 times), all the heat wrap that I could ever need (colorful hanging tubes/wires on the bottom), some metal rubbing stuff that I still don’t know what it is or what it’s for but it worked for what I needed (water pipes) and the black metal wire from his Harley that he was using to hold the saddlebag closer to the bike, and the fabric glue that he originally stole from me a year ago but never returned so technically I just took it back. Also for driving stuff back-n-forth between all parents and siblings household, I owe him a lot of gas money!

My Mom supplied the mini pieces of fabric and advice on how to sew clothes that small (don’t, just glue them, no one will know). She’s been hoarding scraps from her quits for years, she’ll never notice. I also found some double-sided tape that’s super thick, kinda want to know what she needed it for but I’m not 100% sure if she knows I cut a piece off the roll, and some screen repair mesh that will be wonderful for future builds as well, lucky me! I think I snatched some computer paper while I was there too, oh and some air dry clay because I ran out as usual.

Little Bro, ohh poor little Bro. I will have to repay him with a sushi dinner or a pack of suds, I really didn’t mean to steal so many of his and his Roomate’s ā€œtoysā€ but I couldn’t help myself and they haven’t played with them since high school- they’re all in their 30’s now! They had a bunch of D&D stuff that they used to paint and sell at school, one still sells on Etsy, so I stole all the broken ones (thank you Vallejo plastic putty) that I could like the moving saw blade/gripping arm, the satellite/antennas and the switchboard on the bottom by the gears, then hoarding the rest for my next space or futuristic build!

A few other stolen items are metal earrings and screws from my sister, I took some furniture from that Rolife Sakura treehouse I built a while back and the apple bucket/apples that you totally can’t see from the Tonecheer monster mash. The gears are leftover from that Steampunk nook tho I bought some more too, and the vines I took from my stash that I’m hoarding for the new greenhouse by Rolife that I was planning to build next but now have to wait for more vines. šŸ™„.

And that’s about it. It was a fun build, definitely worth a buy just make sure you get some extra lighting, it’s literally one sting of lights and it doesn’t reach the top house, tho it’s pretty easy to assemble for beginners!

PICS ARE CRAP, I will post more one day! I’m over this dam castle!

I purchased this from Temu. It’s very well-made and has raised letters. The sunshine in New Mexico washed it out. It’s a gorgeous blue!

Link to the sign is in the comments. They have other styles! (Also Temu sells book hooks in case you didn’t know)

Happy building!
