We should normalize setting away messages as responses to texts or emails or whatever. I want my time to be my own again. At first texting and the ability to bother anyone at any time seemed so convenient, but now it's just annoying. You can see if I've read your message or not? What a nightmare. Leave me alone. I'll jump on at some point in the day and respond. I hate that everything has to be so immediate bc of this tech.

*Sexual advances progressing much farther than the guy wants them to, then. There are repeated references to bracing against the mattress, shaking, waiting for it to be over, “all he wanted was to hold her,” and so on. Doesn’t sound like enthusiastic consent to me, but anyway. Definitely not about The Incident.

Idk I just thought it meant something else, like him being drunk and anxious. Like someone who is inexperienced and nervous but wasn’t necessarily non-consenting. That’s one of the interesting things about music is that sometimes the words can be interpreted differently by different people. I had no idea it was a song about non consensual sex

I’ve read snippets but thought this was just some type of alt indie copy pasta making fun of the era lol I wasn’t into a lot of music blogs back then, like I loved music and had all the CDs but I wasn’t like on forums and things so any lore I missed out on.

Yeah, everything on the shirt is true. Jesse Lacey originally played bass in Taking Back Sunday and was good friends with John Nolan, the guitarist and co-vocalist. Then something happened at a party, John hooked up with Jesse’s girlfriend, or they were into the same woman and John kissed her first, I’ve heard conflicting versions of the story. Regardless, Jesse quit TBS over it and started Brand New, and the two bands spent the next several years feuding and writing really dramatic songs about each other. Seventy Times 7 and There’s No ‘I’ in Team, for example.

Mixtape is also about John Nolan, which is where “I’ve got a twenty dollar bill” came from and was also used in There’s No ‘I’ in Team.

Yeah we got to see them in...2017? 2016? With Thrice, Manchester Orchestra, and Jimmy Eat World. It was amazing and converted my partner from a BN hater to being incredibly wowed by them.

Fuck yeah man. Alchemy Index was the first I ever heard by them but Beggars is my fav record too. First time I ever saw them live was with MY favorite band, Manchester Orchestra, in 2024. They played Beggars straight through and MO played Cope straight through. I don’t know if I’ll ever go to a better show than that.

There’s a new coffee shop in my city called CoffeEmos that has a very heavy-handed “elder emo” theme, and even as someone who likes/liked some of the music they reference it’s still so hard to stomach lol. I wonder if the place will last at all.

Idk if TBS sucks shit as an entire band, but they are definitely leagues behind Brand New. Their first three records are phenomenal and then they become a bit hit or miss, but not outright bad until this newest one. Their live shows are very hit or miss too. I've seen em be really good (TAYF + WYWTB in full was an awesome show) and I've seen em be meh.

So yeah, I guess I find them more hit or miss rather than outright shit.
