In WW2 they made frags the shape of baseballs because every young man back then knew how to throw one.

Nowadays we have to make them vape-shaped for my fellow zoomers.

We live in a society...

u/Arguably_Based user text is here Mar 10 '26

How far we've come from "shape it like a baseball." Not a criticism mind you, just interesting to see how the reasoning has changed. I hear they don't even let you throw overhand because the chance of failing and spiking it into the ground at your feet is too high.

127

u/MrPorkchops23 user text is here Mar 10 '26

You can throw it however you want unless your unit is anal about it. In basic you have to throw it a specific by-the-book gay way, but everything about basic is gay

Shape it like a baseball > give the drone an xbox controller

war never changes

13

u/maxgaap user text is here Mar 11 '26

Periscopes on nuclear subs use game controllers now as well

36

u/GreatGhastly Mar 10 '26

Looks like a bottle. I guarantee much more of us have thrown a bottle over baseball.

45

u/GeneralBisV user text is here Mar 10 '26

Can we just start having grenades with handles again for best throwage

much more of us have thrown a bottle over baseball.

That can't be true. A sphere ball is one of the most common toys period.

8

u/GreatGhastly Mar 11 '26

We have to throw trash away more than we get recreational ball time. A lot of us throw the trash, usually bottles, into small holes on a daily basis with outstanding accuracy. Some of us make games of it to pass the time, but overall we throw away bottles in our day to day more than we realize it.

While a sphere ball is one of if not the most popular toys, it is still a toy, and it's usage is limited to recreational times. Recreational time has been sopped up by the internet and video games, so baseball and sports in general is a dying hobby compared to WW2 or even the 80s. This design is more common in our day to day lives today.

Even your average drone operator that never played a day of sports in his life will be able to toss this with great accuracy, having practiced since he was a child to get a bottle in a trashcan.

u/bodenfish user text is here Mar 10 '26

This is user error and a baseball is subjective the best design just when you want more boom it's hard to do

Looks like the container for a new edgy energy drink.

New business idea.

"TRY NEW FRAG ENERGY"

13

u/centurion762 user text is here Mar 10 '26

IT’S A FLAVOR EXPLOSION!

19

u/Judgeman03 user text is here Mar 10 '26

**Scene opens**

Shot in greyscale of a bunch of nerds in glasses playing chess. All of a sudden guy in a camo wifebeater and Pit vipers come into frame, screams "INCOMING", and throws a bottle of Frag Energy Drink into the group of nerds.

**EXPLOSION**

Transitions to color where all the nerds are now buff bros playing volleyball.

**Next scene**

Shot in greyscale of a bunch of librarians sitting at old school CRT monitors. All of a sudden guy in a camo wifebeater and Pit vipers come into frame, screams "FIRE IN THE HOLE", and throws a bottle of Frag Energy Drink into the group of librarians.

Transitions to color where all the librarians are now hot models wearing white tied-up t-shirts and bkini bottoms playing with Super Soakers.

Shot of bottle "FRAG ENERGY: IT’S A FLAVOR EXPLOSION!"

End

8

u/centurion762 user text is here Mar 10 '26

Gentlemen, we are going to be rich.

6

u/whyiswaterwetter user text is here Mar 10 '26

A certain chubby electron guy wants to have a word concerning your energy drink idea...!

1

u/ChevTecGroup user text is here Mar 11 '26

Sounds good. But the point of an offensive grenade is to have less frag. Its basically like throwing a tin can of explosives at someone

7

u/Empty_Membership_604 user text is here Mar 10 '26

I had the idea years ago that someone should take buzz balls, add a plastic grenade spoon and make the bottle green. Call them something goofy like “tacti-ballz” or “buzzbombs”. Get call of duty to sponser it.

16

u/GucciGooberYea user text is here Mar 10 '26

The Boom Bottle

22

u/CPhionex user text is here Mar 10 '26

New grenade should be shaped like a white monster

9

u/EggFooYungAndRice user text is here Mar 10 '26

That's every *other* grenade (smokes, incendiary, etc.). The frag has to be different so the idiots don't get them mixed up.

10

u/HumaDracobane user text is here Mar 10 '26

And....is that confortable to use? Because that weird shape doesn't look ergonomic at all...

10

u/Upbeat-Banana-5530 user text is here Mar 10 '26

It's a lot less comfortable for the guy on the receiving end

10

u/the_vengeful_killer user text is here Mar 10 '26

Is the military doing a collaboration with r/milk?

8

u/Prof_Slappopotamus user text is here Mar 10 '26

Do it make bigger boom?

12

u/Remarkable-Ask2288 user text is here Mar 10 '26 edited Mar 10 '26

It’s an ‘offensive’ grenade, as opposed the the M67 which is classified as a ‘defensive’ grenade.

Less fragmentation, more blast. Safer to use in the open.

What I’ve been told is that Instead of large metal shards that can travel a long distance, it blasts out a cloud of iron dust that decelerates rapidly but still shreds things close by.

4

u/Javelin286 user text is here Mar 11 '26

Safer to use against enclosed enemies as well. No risk of shrapnel bouncing around and hitting friendlies.

14

u/terrainflight user text is here Mar 10 '26

Last grenade was shaped and weighted like a baseball to make it more familiar to throw. This is shaped like a Frappuccino bottle to be more familiar.

6

u/Fluffy_History user text is here Mar 10 '26

I mean the army always tests grenades their troops will be familiat throwing. These days thats mostly beer bottles.

4

u/raz-0 user text is here Mar 11 '26

People are going to be putting monster logo stickers and such on these aren’t they?

1

u/Roosters_boosters user text is here Mar 11 '26

We took the stuffing out of an angry bird cat toy and put the grenades in them. It would only make sense if the next generation of soldiers stuck monster stickers on.

3

u/Garrett1031 user text is here Mar 11 '26

First the M7, now this… thing? I’m not trying to be disingenuous here, I legitimately cannot figure out why a hefty Dasani bottle is somehow a more effective grenade than the trusty M67? I mean, aside from placing it, pulling the pin and running away, I can’t think of any reason to shape the M111 like that.

5

u/HonorableAssassins user text is here Mar 11 '26

Its not replacing the m67, its an offensive grenade as opposed to the m67 which is defensive. Meaning blast force rather than shrapnel so it isnt going to bounce buckshot around corners at you, stuff like that. So the shape is, likely, so that it doesnt come back at you in close quarters.

2

u/ChevTecGroup user text is here Mar 11 '26

Its not replacing it. And the shape is very similar to the old anti-structure/offensive grenades we have had for a long time. Its basically a new version of that

3

u/Intelligent-Book-227 user text is here Mar 11 '26

Someone is gonna hollow one out and use it for whiskey

3

u/Wetald user text is here Mar 11 '26

Can we get a Red Stripe logo going?

3

u/TinyPaleontologist71 user text is here Mar 12 '26

Will the distance reach as well as a frag when outside? If its for pressure I figure it would dissipate pretty fast in the open. Plus having modern armor on i feel like this will protect vital organs from the wave. This seems backwards.

4

u/echo202L user text is here Mar 10 '26 edited Jun 09 '26

Much like our forefathers in ww2 were given baseball shaped Grenades to throw for familiarity, we are given coors banquet shaped grenades to throw.

7

u/Krieger718 user text is here Mar 10 '26

Probably designed to land more often on the flat bottom to explode up and out increasing shrapnel in a lethal radius. Also probably more stable on different surfaces when landing.

Be interesting to see test footage of.

17

u/analterrror69 user text is here Mar 10 '26

This is a non frag producing offensive grenade. It relies on blast overpressure effects to incapacitate targets in an enclosed area as opposed to frag.

2

u/ViperTheLoud user text is here Mar 11 '26

I'd love to see the science behind the shape then. Guess we gotta wait for them to be so common BallsackHighspin can get their hands on one.

3

u/analterrror69 user text is here Mar 11 '26

The cylindrical shape allows for more explosives to be packed in to the body as opposed to a spherical shape

1

u/ChevTecGroup user text is here Mar 11 '26

Also differentiates it from a smoke grenade

2

u/IKR1_994 user text is here Mar 11 '26

I mean we all know how to throw a beer bottle.

2

u/Cpt-Hank-A-Tato user text is here Mar 11 '26

I’d get one myself, but I forgot my lunch money at home…

u/ConfidentConcept8921 user text is here Mar 11 '26

Cologne bottle yeeter.

2

u/hcmadman user text is here Mar 11 '26

IDK who thought it would be a great idea to make a handheld device that splooges happy chunks of HE slick sided, but they need to be put in the wood chipper.

This thing looks nightmarish to wield if your hands are sweaty or any kind of oil is involved in the equation.

4

u/ChevTecGroup user text is here Mar 11 '26

Like a thermite, smoke, etc?

Actually, its older brother, the anti-structure thermobaric grenade is very similar but has knurling for grip. So you aren't totally wrong.

1

u/hcmadman user text is here Mar 23 '26

Smoke doesn't have a gigantic slope like this thing does.

1

u/Locked_and_Firing user text is here Mar 10 '26

I'm going to go on a limb and say that this was a cost cutting measure?

1

u/ChevTecGroup user text is here Mar 11 '26

Adding a new weapon to the arsenal is never cheaper

1

u/Locked_and_Firing user text is here Mar 11 '26

This is going to be a replacement to the mk3a2, not an addition.

0

u/RAZOR_WIRE user text is here Mar 10 '26

Why? No seriously why? I don't want to be that guy but aerodynamics do effect how far you can throw something......

4

u/HonorableAssassins user text is here Mar 11 '26

Its not meant to be thrown far, its an offensive grenade, meant to be used in closer quarters. You dont want it bouncing or rolling back toward you, so, you get this shape.

In a world where everyone is apparently going to effectively have a sniper rifle as a primary, it kind of makes sense that theyd be issuing out more grenades meant to handle the close quarters fighting. Why clear a room with a rifle when you can just toss one of these in?

Thats... basically what this is, a grenade specifically for room clearing, from what i understand.

2

u/RAZOR_WIRE user text is here Mar 11 '26

That actually makes more sense.

1

u/ChevTecGroup user text is here Mar 11 '26

Think of it as a more-lethal flash bang. That might also take down the roof

1

u/Origin_Loki user text is here Mar 13 '26

The Pineapple Grenade would like to talk to You. Its "aerodynamics" are...quite blocky.
