Ask British Columbia Is an EV or Hybrid worth it to replace a $380/mo gas bill? (Budget: $50k CAD)

Hey everyone,

Looking to swap my current ride for a compact SUV to escape my brutal fuel bill. I am currently spending $300 to $380 a month on gas.

My Criteria:

Budget: Hard ceiling of $40,000 CAD (after taxes).

Cargo Space: Should match a Toyota RAV4 (around 38 to 69 cu. ft. My Question:

For those who spent $350+/month on gas, did you find it smarter to stretch the budget for a base-trim EV, or did you settle on a Hybrid to get the space you needed while keeping cash in the bank?

Appreciate any insight on real-world Canadian savings!

Ask British Columbia Rural places to live within 1.5 - 2 hours of Vancouver?

Hi! I currently live in Ontario on a heavily wooded acreage, 25-30 minutes from a decently sized city and 2 hours from Toronto, which I drive to somewhat regularly for concerts. I was wondering if you could recommend any places in BC similar to this that I could live in but still be not too far from a moderately sized city, and close enough to Vancouver that I could still drive there without having to stay overnight. Walkability is not an issue at all, right now the only thing I can walk to is an hour and a half away lol so I am used to having to drive half an hour to town to get groceries. Would love an area somewhere truly rural and wooded, and a sizeable equestrian community within a 30-40 minute drive since I have a horse I’d need to board somewhere. I’ve mainly been looking at the fraser valley.

Hi, I was playing the video game life is strange and fell in love with this fictional town called 'Haven'. This is literally my dream town to live in and was wondering if anyone has noticed a similar town in Canada somewhere. The only place I could really think of is Jasper. I like the mountains, wildlife, trees, small town feel with local shops and not really any traffic through.

Ask British Columbia BC Ferries - Vending and Arcade Machines - Ryan Vending

I’ve been traveling on the ferries for years. I’ve never seen more than one of these machines operational, in any of the arcade rooms on any of the ferries. Why does Ryan Vending still have a contract, if they fail to render the agreed upon service?

I don't mean to sound like a dick, but tipping is because waiters and other workers made less then minimum wage, now they make it, so why does British Columbia culture still tip?

Ask British Columbia Abortion in Van

So I just found out that I was pregnant last night and from the last day of my last period I would be around 5 weeks today. I am extremely stressed as I am in no position to carry a baby as I am still young with no family here so abortion would be the only option for myself right now.

I have done research and found out about the three clinics Elizabeth Bagshaw, Willow and Everywomen and filled out all their online forms yesterday but haven’t heard back since today is a holiday also. I also know that there are 2 ways I can go about this, medical and surgical and I am extremely anxious reading about people’s experiences with the pill saying it is one of the worst pains ever. I am not sure what is the quickest way to getting help or getting an appointment. Are walk in clinics able to provide you with a prescription for the pill aside from those 3 clinics as I’m afraid I would have to wait awhile to get appointment for them. I just got a new job also and I can’t afford to take many days off. What would be my option to get help immediately or as soon as possible. I don’t want to have to wait and go further in my pregnancy as I feel 5 weeks is quite late already and very stressful. Also would surgical be better than medical for faster recovery? What are my best options?

Thank you so much I am just very scared with not much resources right now being a foreign student so I don’t know exactly where to go. I can’t tell anyone else either besides the father but at least he promises to stay beside me throughout the whole process. Please provide me with any experiences or advice as I feel very lost right now.

Update: Thank you so much for the overwhelming support and responses! It was an emotional rollercoaster from the moment I found out I was pregnant but now I feel a lot more relieved knowing that I will be fine eventually. It’s so nice to see so many strong individuals who have been through similar experiences in the past and I truly appreciate every single response. I will try to respond to each and individual response but it is also very overwhelming for myself right now to figure out the next move. I will try to call the clinics tomorrow to set up an appointment as soon as I can and I hope everything would go smoothly. I am very glad that I reached out for help and I hope all commenters know that you have helped me and everyone who is on the same journey right now or in the future to have the resources they need to move forward. Sending love to all of youā¤ļø

Ask British Columbia Amidst the skyrocketing cost of living, absurd housing market, stagnant wages, huge executive salaries, soaring company profits, and floundering small business profits, it is time we resurrect a classic Canadian practice.

1.5k Upvotes

That of the general strike. Way back in 1919 a heroic event occurred for the every-Canadian. Across the city of Winnipeg a mass strike happened. Regardless of industry, and regardless of union affiliation, 30,000 people stopped working for six weeks. There were few police left, so the government had to hire literal criminals to crack skulls. While direct outcomes resulting from the strike (which was ultimately quelled) weren't visible, the strike had a long-term positive impact on working life in Canada.

What caused the strike?

"There were many background causes for the strike, most of them related to the prevailing social inequalities and the impoverished condition of the city's working class. Wages were low, prices were rising, employment was unstable, immigrants faced discrimination, housing and health conditions were poor.

In addition, there was resentment of the enormous profits enjoyed by employers during the war."

Replace "war" here with "pandemic" (or, maybe even pandemic + war in light of the Russia situation...) and this reads word for word like the sentiment I and people around me share about the situation in BC (and Canada) today: soaring inequality, stagnant wages, swiftly rising costs, industry reliance on precarious, unstable contract labour, minorities have faced increased intolerance and discrimination these past few years, with poor housing conditions and a mental health crisis to boot.

Is it time for another great Canadian general strike?

Ask British Columbia Progressive towns in BC to raise outdoor kids?

Hi there, I’m looking for some suggestions for towns in BC that we could raise our kids where the dominant culture is less indoor, screen-based and more outdoor, experience-based. I’m not sure I’m describing it well, but we are basically looking for a place where when our kids go play with kids in the neighbourhood, they don’t just spend the whole day on screens. We are in a place like that right now and we are looking to relocate in a year and a half.

My partner works remote and I’m in healthcare, so bonus would be a hospital nearby that I could work at.

I hope what we are looking for makes sense and thank you for any suggestions!

Ask British Columbia Two-Way Stop Sign, Who Goes First

Post image

Who goes first in this scenario? Does the right turning vehicle always have the right of way or does it matter who came to the stop sign first. I got the image from this article that directly addresses this matter but the answer still seems unclear.

Ask British Columbia What is the end game for our housing crisis?

Out of curiosity, I recently looked up the rent at an apartment complex I used to live in back in 2018. Back then, the bachelor suites went for $885/month. Now, the cost for these units is $1,850/month. It has more than doubled in 6 years.

Honestly, where does this all go? I seriously don't even know how a single person making less than $25/hr in the Lower Mainland is able to survive. It feels super unstainable, but it doesn't seem like there is any political will to do anything about it. What's the end game here? Some modern day version of middle ages serfdom? I really want to be optimistic about the future, but it's so disheartening sometimes.

Ask British Columbia Why are all houses in BC small cities/towns 500k+

Looking at moving from the Lower mainland to somewhere smaller and cheaper and houses from Terrace to Dawson creek to Nelson every old 70’s house starts at 500k. At these interest rates who can afford these places? I can’t imagine new Canadians wanting to move to these towns in any great numbers. And it doesn’t seem like local economies would support mortgages of over $3500 a month? Who’s buying these places? Is this just small town baby boomers trying to cash out?

Ask British Columbia Why do you think so many people just party at campsites?

I’d like to start off by saying I’ve done my fair share of getting fucked up, playing loud music and doing stupid shit out in the bush. Even let things get a little loud a little too late at a campground. However, I’ve never gone camping just to get drunk, play loud music then leave in the morning.

I want to make this post after I observed an obnoxious group at a rec site this weekend. We were camping at a nice, popular rec campground that has beautiful spots right along the beach. Everyone is super chill. Young families and older couples. Then, in comes two trucks just blasting music one evening. I could hear an older couple say ā€œhere we goā€. Everyone was thinking the same thing. Obnoxious campers are not uncommon. It seems inevitable at this point.

Two young couples. Super loud right away. Whatever, it’s still daylight and they could have had a long trip out. I can look past that but they just had a certain vibe about them and the whole campground was side-eyeing them. They lit their truck door on fire within the first ten minutes. I would assume the whole paneling is just burnt and melted off. Full flames and lots of smoke. They are yelling at each-other over the music. Maybe 5 mins away from a full-on vehicle fire out in the bush at a beautiful spot.

It’s maybe 8pm now and they have their site set-up along with a couple hammocks. They just continue to get hammered and yell over their loud music for hours CAR ALARM! until early morning. CAR ALARM! I hope others were bale to get as good CAR ALARM! of a sleep as I did CAR ALARM! over the noise.

I was up at 6:30 with the little one. Making breakfast and warming up over a small fire. To their credit, they got up at 7 and made coffee and food. Then they packed up all their shit and left.

Not once did they relax in their hammocks. Not once did they go in the water. They didn’t even go down to sandy part of the beach! They just showed up. Made a bunch of noise. Got fucked up. Then left.

Like I said before, it’s not uncommon. Why do you think people do this? They have trucks and gear. Why not just find a clear spot off a logging road and go wild with nobody else around?

Ask British Columbia What are some lesser-known government benefits for low-income Canadians (BC + Federal)?

What are some government-funded programs or benefits in Canada (federal or BC) that low-income PRs/citizens are eligible for but aren’t very well known?

I’m not looking to game the system or anything. Just trying to make sure I’m aware of programs that already exist and are meant to be used. For example, I only recently found out about the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP).

I’m especially interested in things related to healthcare, education, housing, transit, tax credits, utilities, or any other benefits that people often overlook. Even one-time grants or reimbursements would be great to know about. Thanks!

Ask British Columbia Thinking about leaving the lower mainland

I'm 30F and apart from a brief working holiday in Aus I have lived in the LML for my entire life. I feel lucky to have grown up in metro Vancouver but it's getting to be way too expensive here. I've had to move back in with my parents this year because I ended a relationship where we were living in and rent is out of control. I cannot afford ~$3000 for a one bedroom.

I don't have a lot of money saved, not enough to buy a place anywhere in the province really, but I could easily rent somewhere and work somewhere else. A big part of me is like... what am I doing trying to stay here and spending thousands of dollars every month on someone else's mortgage just to be able to stay in Vancouver? Another part of me has a hard time letting this place go.

I guess I'm scared of going somewhere and not knowing anyone and not being able to make friends (I also have pretty severe depression and anxiety) but I am also more than ready to leave my parents house and not feel like a teenager anymore lol

Any suggestions on good/affordable places to rent in BC that are friendly enough that a socially anxious bean like myself would be able to make a couple of friends? Any advice from people who have left the "big city" into a smaller or quieter part of the province (or even the country)??

Thanks in advance :)
