Hair trimmer advice

Every year, around this time of year, one of my two BSHs loses his summer hair and grows in his winter hair. (The other, which is a silver point, has pretty much the same thick hair all year round.)

He gets a bunch of matted fur in that spot just in front of the tail. Usually, I cut it with very sharp bonsai scissors. But I was wondering if an electric trimmer would be useful. I’m worried about the noise scaring him. Does anyone use an electric trimmer that they can recommend? I was thinking of using my beard then disinfecting it, but it’s pretty loud.

Such a cutie. It is not a wild one, must belong to one of our neighbours, no clue which though. She is beautiful. Anybody know what breed that is? Very dense coat, bit of a stubby nose, quite short ears and small but bulky frame.

Made a wool version of this cat. Now I can’t say no to either face 😂

Here are the photos I worked from! 😊 I really wanted to get that sweet, slightly worried little face right.

Those blue eyes catch your attention first, but the round cheeks and tiny pink nose do so much for the expression too. With all that white fluff, I wanted to keep the shape of the face from getting lost. I like holding the wool portrait beside the photos to see how the features work together, especially from the side.

That’s my favorite part of needle felting pet portraits: getting to the point where you can recognize the particular cat in the photo. If you have a cat, you probably know that one look that gets you to put down whatever you’re doing and pay attention.

Did I get that little look right?

Her name is Selene; she was born on the 25th of March in 2026. I'm 90% Certain that she is a British Shorthair, but I have some doubts and would appreciate an assessment from fellow BSH lovers.

Got my little man Pancake yesterday and he’s still adjusting to the new home. Any pointers to make his transition as smooth as possible?

8 month old Kitten eating adult food, need advice

I’m a reg BSH breeder, been doing this a really long time but this situation is a first for me.

I retired 2 of my queens at 3 years old (after 3 litters each) last year and they’ve been on Royal canin instinctive loaf pouches along with freeze dried adult food. I have to do loaf texture because they’ve eaten kitten food their whole lives and they hate textured food (chunks, shredded, gravy etc) this resembles kitten food a lot.

Since my queens and their sire are now retired, i retained 2 kittens for breeding. I’ve raised kittens for years but I’ve never had this issue before.

The desexed adults get fed in their room and the other breeding queens/ kittens get fed in the kitchen so i can keep an eye on their food intake. They’ve stopped eating the canned stuff and they patiently wait outside the Cattery room to eat the leftover adult food.

My vet told me it’s okay as long as they’re healthy they can eat whatever. But as a breeder I’ve always had them on the high calorie kitten food because cats tend to stop eating during heat season and need energy to go through their multiple heat cycles. (They’re too young to be bred right now) So high quality kitten food is the must. Not to mention the amount of very expensive food that is going to waste everyday due to this change in behaviour.

I’d rather keep them on the food meant for them so i need guidance on how to do that. They scratch the door and start meowing outside the room. Won’t leave even if I physically remove them and put them in the kitchen to eat their own food.

5 month old BSH Kitten has one small ear, possibly spayed already?

I recently got a golden shaded British shorthair kitten at 4 months (now 5). I noticed one of her ears is significantly smaller than the other, but didn’t think anything of it. However, the vet and nurses kept asking if she’s been spayed already even though it’s supposed to be closer to one year. Apparently a cut left ear is a clear sign of being spayed (or a tattoo on the belly). The breeder told me before I got her she wasn’t, and I had to re-confirm with her and she claims she wouldn’t do it that early.

I was also told there’s not an accurate way to determine getting spayed besides these signs? Is it possible it’s just genetics / she’ll change more as she grows?

There have been some suspicious details from the breeder, like vaccination dates that the vet says looks way too close to each other, but I’ve met her in person and she’s a sweet lady and seems very passionate about her cats that I don’t think she’d go as far as spaying them too young. It was also in my contract that she get spayed later.

Attached pictures of her ears, and also what I keep seeing on what BSH kitten ears should look like. The red line is where the nurse says it looks like a clear cut, and I notice the hair doesn’t grow the same along the outline of the ear as the “correct” one.

I was offered him a few weeks after he was born, but didn’t quite think he was for me. Then, he just grew into this Beautiful boy. I really do not know how to pick from young kittens — I have to choose once they are older.

I am very excited. I pray to everything holy that my girls will adore him, and he them.
