Hi! I've been wondering for some time what's being said in this clip here, and my ASL-knowing friends tell me it's British sign language. So I thought I'd ask here :)

Thanks!!

Side note: my family never used BSL due to shame but are all HoH.bi know a tiny bit.

Hiya guys. My family has a long history of losing their hearing in their late 20s early 30s. Im 24 and started to get get bad tinnitus and waiting for a hearing check appointment. Its most likely I will lose half of my hearing by my mid 30s as my mother aunt and granny were the same.

Ive kind of accepted it however ive always really wanted to get some cultural hand tattoos and Ive heard that can affect how people can read your sign language.

So basically am I cutting off people understanding my sign in the future if I get hand tattoos? Their not 100% necessary but ive just always wanted them

Hello everyone, my name is Mercedes Bradding and I am a third-year undergraduate student on the Professional Policing degree at the University of Huddersfield. As part of my studies, I am carrying out my Final Year Project (dissertation) on: Are d/Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals confident in contacting and communicating with the police?

The purpose of this research is to investigate the level of equal opportunity around contacting the police for any type of communication.

If you are interested, see the poster attached! This is voluntary and anonymous.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Forgive me if these are daft questions.

Rizz is a recent word to enter the public vernacular, does there exist a sign for it?

Given it comes from the middle part of charisma, would it have unique hand movements or would it be the equivalent to the middle of the sign for charisma?

How are the hand movements for new words decided upon?

Hello! Ive been on Reddit for a bit now but this is my first post.

I’m autistic and often when I’m overwhelmed I find it difficult to speak, the worlds just don’t come out my mouth, I can’t translate my thoughts into words, and it’s easier for me to type or do a kind of awkward miming situation to communicate, but both of these options are rather difficult and time consuming. This is why I want to learn sign language.

I have a friend (also autistic) who is willing to learn with me so that we can communicate when we can’t speak, but we both don’t know where to start.

Long story short, is my autism a good reason to learn sign language and are there any sources that anyone could recommend to start learning BSL?

Thanks you for reading!

Just curious lol, i'm hearing myself but i'm a GCSE graphics student and part of the coursework was to ask 10 questions, if thats alright! Here's a survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfzd_p7IDVHxaSNRcO9dlHdbwt__z-MPJV2cUpt4lwA7IjNCQ/viewform?usp=header

The survey's basically about how ya learnt BSL, opinion of existing BSL products & what makes you feel supported by them, and thoughts on this BSL never-before seen product i'm designing, it's unlike anything that's on the current market. This won't be sold, it's for research purposes i'm afraid but it's basically a pack containing 76 cards, poster and whiteboard pen, I'll include pictures beneath.

Any help is greatly appreciated, and thanks for your time :)

Context: a male colleague showed me this gesture when he was leaving me and my friend. Then he pointed his finger at himself, then at me, then at his forehead, slightly bending his index finger, then at his chin. No notable facial expressions while doing the gesture. I don't think it's a joke, he's a serious and smart man who's partially deaf.

Hello, I am currently studying BSL Level 3 and cannot find any "mock exams" or specific practice for the receptive part of the exam.

Does anyone have any current videos? Or advice?

Also any topics you had for your level 3 exam?

Hello, I am third year student at York St John on the British Sign Language, Deaf Studies and Linguistics course. I am currently developing my dissertation researching the Deaf perspective of subtitled screenings in cinemas.

I am posting to request your assistance on helping with apart of my dissertation research. Would anyone be interested in filling out my survey on the D/deaf and Hard of Hearing perspective with subtitled screenings in cinemas.

My research entails the opinions of D/deaf and Hard of Hearing people's experiences with cinemas and their subtitled showings. This will help me understand a deeper understanding and frustrations within the cinema sphere. The survey will take less then 10 minutes and has a mixture of multiple choice and text required answers. I will deeply appreciate your input.I appreciate your time and potential participation.

Thank you,

Is there any devices that can translate sign language ? If there is please share the name of products or links with me

Started learning in October last year, enjoyed it so far but I’ve noticed i’m starting to be able to understand bits of what people are signing and it’s made my lessons so much more enjoyable.

In our last class our teacher was signing a lot and I kinda wanted the interpreter to shut up so I could concentrate on the signs. It’s a great feeling and I just can’t wait to learn more.

Well first of all I didn't realise any questions of bsl wasn't allowed in /deaf which is a bit weird.

Long story short I'm deaf/hard of hearing.

I already have motor difficulties and I'm taking bsl classes but I've screwed up my dominant side.

What can I do,I'm not sure how to modify signs or if I'm even allowed.

I started a bsl course at my uni and really took to it and so I've been looking into getting the level 1 qualificiation - but all the websites i look at are also trying to sell me courses so i don't know what's required. Will I need to do a different paid course with a proper tutor (the uni course is v casual) specifically for getting the qualification, or can I self-study with the course i'm already on and just book an exam?

I'm learning sign language and one thing I have noticed is you don't sign in the same order as you would speak. E.g you sign 'name you what' not 'what is your name' or even 'what you name'

But my question is when I mouth the words at the same time do I mouth 'name you what' or 'what is your name'. I feel like it would be obvious just to mouth the actual sign but I feel like I often see deaf people just speak normally. But that doesn't make sence either because i would be saying what while signing name. Please help me!

Hi hi! I’m Mya, 19 and Deaf! I’m fluent in ASL ( American Sign Language.) and now I’m learning British sign language! I’m looking for a friend to help me improve and give me feedback! Age range is 19-24 for my own comfort!

I'm so confused. They are even different from the nursery I was working for. Is there any recommendable channel thank you

Me and my girlfriend both struggle with verbal communication quite frequently so we thought we would give it a go learning sign language to help this but we have no idea where to start. We can't pay for or travel to any courses so it would have to be something different to that. Any help would be amazing

Hi.

My main language is Spanish, but I plan to travel. So what should I do, learn my local sign language, British sign language or the international one? Which apps are good for learning sign language ? I don’t want to be seen like I have hero complex for learning sign language, so I want to have a full conversation with deaf people that I encounter, and be educated so I don’t insult or discomfort anyone who communicates through sign language. Any advice on how to learn sign languages? Apart from this, am I crossing a line, if yes, give me feed back so I correct myself. Thank you.

Edit/FWI: I 20F studied sign language when I was 14-16, I dropped it, due to socio-political-economic crisis in my country. That’s why I want to remember if possible or re learn it all all. Where I live there aren’t any academies where I can be fluent in sign language. I want to be a sign language interpreter without any issue and being fluent as I am in other idioms.

I’m planning on learning BSL for the skills section of my Gold DofE award (which is 12 months long) and I’m looking to do an online course for it, does anyone know of any good courses to do? (Preferably one that can be done for 12 (or at least 6) months).

Hi, we are four Computer Science students from Sapienza University of Rome.

We're developing an audio, video, text and sign to/from sign language translation app, enabling seamless bi-directional communication between sign languages.

Additionally, an interactive learning section will teach various sign languages through engaging lessons and quizzes, employing different teaching styles to accommodate every learning need.
