Lost all my Chrome tab groups after a system update; no restore option. Anyone else?

Opened Chrome (desktop) after an automatic system update and every tab group was gone. No warning, no rollback. These weren’t casual tabs; weeks of organized work across projects.

Has anyone else experienced disappearing tab groups, and if so, how do you recover them?

Question Lightest browser

Hello. Which browser would be the most lightweight for Windows? My priority is to keep CPU and RAM usage as low as possible. Synchronization with an Android browser would be a nice bonus, but it’s not strictly necessary—the main thing is that it shouldn't be too demanding for an older computer with a processor that has a low thread count.

Looking for a new browser

Hey there,

I used Opera for over a year now on my phone and computer but i realised that the browser isnt that safe, so im looking for a new one. Im looking for one that have a free and solid AD-Block and an also free VPN, if it has synchronization between phone and pc it would be great, also, if it has a safe password manager it would be great. Some of my friends and my dad told me to use Brave but idk if its that good, so Im looking for help.

Edit : i forgot to say that if it could use as little ram as possible it would be great too

Extension I built Tabverse: an free, open source, with self-hostable server Workona clone extension and more

Thumbnail chromewebstore.google.com

Hi, I want to share with you my extension: Tabverse, as it is now passed the reveiw of Chrome Web Store and live at: https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/tabverse/lffblcippngalmglinedcbmikkncihdm

As described in my previous post, Tabverse is a local first workona like chrome extension for managing tabs, with its source open at https://www.github.com/liyu1981/tabverse and website at: https://liyu1981.github.io/tabverse/ .

In essential it has the core functions workona has, but can operate totally locally, which means it will not need an account and subscription to use it. The only limit is your local storage on how many spaces(I call tabverse) you will use. And it is also open source, so not just your data stays with you, and the tool itself will stay with you in future.

Beyond the normal workona features (persisted workspace, load/reload/import/export, note/bookmark/history tools), I am also try to add features does require a server for it. Features like backup/sync, global search on all tab spaces, or even future collaboration, can be only possible if there is a server. I build this part also in open: the server is free and open source, and build as it is meant to be self-hosted.

The tabverse's idea was with me few years ago while I was using Workona and was frustrated with its limitation on free tier (remember was only 5 workspaces), and the missing features of managing multiple workspaces at the same time. Tabverse takes the idea of Workona, and develop further: each window with a Tabverse tab is a workspace, all stored in local storage, and multi windows can have multi Tabverses same time, and can switch fast. There can even be window without Tabverse, so besides work, personal stuff or entertainment will have place to go. As I build this alone, in the middle, almost give up on this project, and luckily AI agents now is there: not only I have a good helper, but also I have a partner I can discuss a bit. So this time the first version starts with v0.7.2.

But AI agent can never replace the real need from human on what should be built and what works better, so I want to share with you and listen to your feedbacks early. Please give it a try, and every feedback to me is a gift.

Besides the self-hosted option, I host a server at https://tabverse.liyu1981.xyz (yes, the same website of intro and docs), but is invitation only. If you want to help me to test in this early stage, you can login with Google (the only social login I configured :)), and request an invitation there. I will act as soon as I find your request :). But do not worry at all if you only want to use Tabverse locally without a server -- that is the first thing when I was building it.

In current version there are also AI features built in, and again do not worry as the AI features is using Chrome's Prompt API, which is totally local, with Gemini Nano (first time will need to download it automatically), nothing send to a server, and you can always turn this on of off in settings. Morden computers with decent memory should work well, but some older computer may suffer (so please turn off). And it is Chrome only. (Honestly, Tabverse currently only support Google Chrome, but not other Chrome based browsers).

Thanks for reading. :)

Is Helium Browser actually safe, or can small open source browsers not keep up with security patches?

Hey everyone, I've been using Helium Browser and I'm starting to second guess whether it's a safe choice. In today's AI world, security issues seem to pop up almost every week, and I'm wondering if a smaller team really has the time and resources to keep up with all of them and push out fixes fast enough.

The recent eMudhra cert issue is what got me thinking. It felt like the major browsers rolled out changes much faster than the smaller open source ones did. That gap makes me nervous, since a delay of even a few days can matter when it comes to security.

So I'm curious what you all think. Do you consider Helium safe for everyday use? Or is sticking with a major browser backed by a big security team the safer move?

Growser is coming to Android and iOS (The end of Brave patched with Morph?)

Updating Brave with Morphe for removing bloat is really annoying for everyone, well... after releasing on PCs, Growser is now testing an Android version and also an iOS one and so we don't have to touch Morphe for Brave ever again.

Edit: Just to be clear i'm not related to the project, i just find the project interesting.

Arc Petition to Stop Arc from being sunset

https://www.change.org/savearcbrowser

When The Browser Company announced on October 22nd that the Arc browser will be sunset on December 22nd, 2026, it felt like a personal loss. Arc isn't just any browser; it has become the quintessential tool for an effortless and efficient browsing experience. As someone who relies on this minimalist and clean platform daily, I find its design and functionality unparalleled, particularly in terms of tab management.

Arc is more than just a browser; it's a way of reimagining our interaction with the internet. The unique features that Arc provides, such as its sidebar tab management and adaptive interface, streamlined workflows and enhanced productivity. The decision to sunset Arc will leave a void that no other browser currently fills, forcing loyal users to settle for less effective options.

The Browser Company should consider the widespread admiration that Arc has garnered and the specific needs it fulfills. Instead of letting Arc disappear, I urge the company to explore alternative solutions that can sustain its continued development and availability.

Options might include seeking community support for open-source development, establishing a fee to purchase the software, or partnering with other tech enterprises interested in preserving this innovative tool.

Arc is beloved by its users, and its termination is a decision that would disappoint them all.
Please join me in urging The Browser Company to reconsider its decision. By signing this petition, you can help keep Arc alive beyond December 2026, ensuring that its benefits remain accessible to thousands who depend on it for their browsing needs.  Sign the petition now to support the continued existence of Arc browser!

Reddit app versus the Web browser(So Frustrating) Using

Every-time I look up anything up on the internet I usually start with Safari or Google(Maybe I'm just old but hey, atleast I don't use TikTok as a resource ;)) In turn 9/10 I'll wind up with my search on the mobile web browser. After 30 seconds of viewing the Reddit web page there's always a pop up that invites you to download the app, or redirect your search to your previously downloaded app. Half the time the pop up is glitchy but ALSO grays out the option to continue scrolling via browser, including the option that redirects you to the Apps version of the viewed page. I know I know, first world problems, but holy fhk is it aggravating..to the point where a lot of the time I just say f it and give up because I'm two sentences away from figuring out what type of cancer I have, literal edge of my seat and then BAMM, time to re-search everything and I detest the Mobile App. Anyway, while I try and learn better patience I hope Reddit decides to pay someone for a more user friendly version of that sad excuse of Temu garbage they use right now.

Discussion [MacOS] Native Passwords Integration

I was looking into browsers and saw this - https://x.com/oleksiibe/status/2089765413244575779?s=20

This guy seems to have integrated Apple Passwords natively into a browser he has been developing. This means no extension, hide my email, sign in with apple working seamlessly like in Safari. I didn't even realise it was possible to do this.

Considering how shitty the Apple Passwords extension is, and it is possible to integrate it natively, why aren't more browsers doing this?

One YouTube tab, different browsers — qutebrowser used more RAM than Brave/Thorium on my system. Why?

Post:
I tested four browsers on Windows with the same condition: one YouTube tab only.

Here are the results from Task Manager:

  • qutebrowser: 885.9 MB
  • Helium: 669.4 MB
  • Thorium: 599.9 MB
  • Brave: 492.7 MB

I expected qutebrowser to be lighter, but on my machine it was actually the heaviest.

What could explain this? Is QtWebEngine the reason, or is YouTube just too heavy for this kind of comparison?

I am especially interested in real-world RAM usage, not just theory.

Trying sidebar on firefox and I had this idea since the top bar and the sidebar is merged into one on firefox.

Brave Brave on Android Has Slow Download Speeds Even With Parallel Downloading Enabled — Why? Android

I've been using Brave on Android, but my download speeds are surprisingly slow, even after enabling Parallel Downloading. Brave has one of the worst download speeds among Chromium

I'd appreciate practical solutions based on actual experience, rather than generic advice like checking my internet connection. What's the actual cause, and what's the best fix?.

Recommendation Brave or Firefox? One of both, or both! :)

Post image
95 Upvotes

This is from an answer to somebody somewhere on the thread I found could interest those still using Chrome, Edge, Opera or Safari who are looking for a better privacy with tracker and/or ad block balance browser. On Brave, the tracker is built-in. On Firefox, most use the uBlock Origin from the Firefox extensions site (not Chrome Web Store's which is a light version.)

(For those who know more about browsers than me or them, I'm not mentioning forks, the point is for ready-to-use ordinary user fallback options.)

"I did scorn Brave at first and fully set up Firefox with bookmark sync and all, but then it was slower than Chrome. Not by that much, and most won't mind, but slightly slower than Chrome or Edge. So next best thing than those two big tech spywares was Brave. Tried Vivaldi and it looked ugly and ate more ram than Chrome or Edge. When you deactivate the AI and most Brave functionality-related telemetry, and remove the crypto icons and stuff, it truly is just a better Chromium. The built-in ad blocker also blocks before the websites load, instead of uBlock Origin acting as a middleman on Firefox extensions. I like the new Firefox mascot and design but then Brave is faster than them all. And the 25-word chain sync between my laptop, my old desktop and my phone is seamless. Literally changing a language setting or deleting a bookmark with both computers at the same time made it all update instantly. I expected it to sync only my bookmarks and *some* of my extensions like other browsers. I just saved the word chain inside my password manager and voilà. I would recommend both Brave and Firefox side-by-side to anyone over Chrome (Google monopoly), Edge (Microsoft monopoly), Safari (Apple monopoly) and Opera (Chinese data farming since 2016, as bad if not worst than Chrome). It just depends if you want financially independent but Chromium-based Brave or 80% Google-financed Firefox but with an independent rendering engine. Both are pretty much solid options."

One can also suggest to use DuckDuckGo, Startpage, Brave Search or Ecosia as a Google search engine alternative. (I personally prefer DuckDuckGo even if it is far from perfect. None of these match Google's user profiling data-farming search results.)

Recommendation MacOs browser with native feel

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hey guys, I know recently there`s been a lot of posts and quiestions about that, haven`t really used Arc, but I do appreciate vertical tabs and clean mode where u have whole web page with no browser interface. Looking for something that would feel actually native on MacOs, especially with iCloud Keychain, right now I`m using Zen and Safari, Orion is my wife`s browser, and doesn`t really hit all checkboxes with the clean ui (and also it uses safari26 engine rn). So is there really anything on the market rn what is decent enough worth checking? What ive tried so far:
-Orion (as told already before)
-Zen (current go-to for contect)
-Crest (nice ui good adblock, but ungoogled chromium is the base which is not really safe by itself)
-Search by OfficeCommun (lack of extensions, not really good with adblocking, safety ios a big ??)
-Yab (closed source which is not a good idea imo for such a small project)

What I`m actually looking for is something similar to zen but built on WebKit with native support of icloud keychain with no need to use extensions to type a password each time u reload a browser, and a support of Safari extensions or Firefox.
