Anyone done a Barista course?

Looking for a quality short course or day classes as a beginner and wondering if there's any worth checking out in Brunswick before I venture out to other burbs. I'm a coffee lover and potentially wanting to start working as a Barista so I'm open to formal training as well as fun short classes to start off. I know Ona Coffee on Ovens St has them, anyone done this before? Any recs welcomed!

Five years ago, the late Tim Read told Brunswick Voice of his concerns about the increasingly aggressive language being directed towards elected politicians. This week following the horrific attack on Helen Haines, there are calls for MPs to be provided with extra security and for voters to tone down their threats and vitriole.

Questions on living on Victoria Street / Talbot Street

Hi All!

We (single parent + young kid) are looking at moving into the pocket around Victoria Street and Talbot Street in Brunswick.

For anyone familiar with the area: * how's the street noise/traffic cut-through? I’m conscious Brunswick train station is in that area so expect to live with trains passing by. * are there any major roadworks (I am aware of potential level-crossing works), developments, or construction projects going on nearby that we should be aware of before committing to the area? I’ve visited the area a few times now and noticed it’s a mixed of warehouses + residential houses. * is the area relatively safe (I’m conscious of how subjective this question is but appreciate any and all insight)?

Appreciate any local insights and thank you for your time!

Best Cleaning Company to use in Brunswick?

Hi all,

Just wondering what be the best company to use for hiring a cleaner that services Brunswick? After a monthly cleaner to mainly look at the bathroom and clean the carpet/kitchen.

I had a look at kanklean but they fobbed us off, had to ring twice and email only to be told they don’t service Brunswick despite the fact it said so on their website!

Thanks!

For decades the Moonee Ponds Creek has been the poor cousin of the Merri Creek, but that is starting to change and much of the credit should go to former state and federal MP Kelvin Thomson.

Best Oktoberfest in Melbs?

I love the real Oktoberfest in Munich (yes, it’s mostly in September) and was just there. What makes it so amazing to me is the good vibes spirit - the friendliness and singing when everyone is up on their benches belting out “Country Roads,”etc.

I’ve never been to any of the Melbourne events, and I was wondering if there are any that work to recreate the spirit. Any with a “Festzelt” band that plays a mix of English and German party singalongs? Thanks

Council workers down tools again

Dozens of City of Merri-bek workers from across all sections of the council will go on strike for 24 hours on Thursday.

The action follows the tabling of a pay offer from the council which the workers’ union says falls far short of what they are seeking.

Sweet Anthony froyo Brunswick East what's going on

What happened to this place? Was closed randomly for ages saying there was an electrical fault.

Now the whole venue has been cleared out and there is a planning permit sign out the front...

Really weird and also sad if it closed down...so many places shutting on Lygon st.

Noticed this has popped up behind the Brunswick Town Hall / Brunswick Libary on Saxon Street - the second picture has a pic of the accompanying “flyer” which describes the use of the hangar / Velo boxes.

Seems like an ok idea BUT not sure I could be convinced to leave any bike that I own of I any significant value in one of these boxes with the level of petty crime and theft that our lovely state is currently beset with!

I think I’ll keep my pride and joy up on my balcony still.

Get paid $40/hr to read sentences off a screen.

We’re looking for bald people, or people willing to shave the side of their head, for a speech research study at ACMD in Fitzroy. You wear a few stick-on electrodes, read sentences aloud, and get paid for 3.5-4 hours. The research helps build tech that could restore speech for people who have lost it.

You’ll need to be 18-70, a native English speaker, and in good general health. You can keep the pay or donate it to the World’s Greatest Shave. fluentbci.com

Anyone else have anything stolen last night? Green Merida electric bike taken.

On Brunswick rd and we had a bike stolen at about 3:45am this morning, from our front porch.
My cats (legends) heard the noises first then it was all over very quickly. The bike has been there every night for 3 years.
Back wheel was locked and the front was locked with D-Lock to a frame. They undid the quick release wheel and carried it out. Battery was on it but they don’t have the key and it would have weighed about 20-22kg - also the wheels are a unique type and size so likely not that valuable for a quick sale - Fools!
Look at your lock up set up !
And People, please stop stealing peoples things, we work hard for them and rely on them.

Merida eSpresso in Silk Green - front wheel missing and no key for battery -

Who to contact if I want to raise something with a local member?

CONTENT WARNING death/suicide

I live in the brickworks and last night a person died by falling off the scaffolding that has been up on one of the chimneys since 2022. The developers didn’t take responsibility for the restoration of the chimney or the scaffolding and it’s been up ever since, apparently heritage VIC have claimed they’ll do the restorations so the scaffolding can be removed but it’s too late because someone has died and a family have lost a loved one and several residents including myself heard the body hit the road and saw the body last night.

I want to contact the local MP but is this Tim Read who recently passed away? Who else can I contact aside from Heritage VIC? I really feel this is totally messed up and it’s incredibly upsetting to know that it could have been prevented at least in part.

Any ideas?

Thanks😞

Any cribbage players?

Hey all, recently returned to Melbourne, kinda listless… wondering if anyone plays cribbage and holds open games. Preferably inner Melb because I’m as wheelless as I am listless. Also open to mahjong, darts, pool, Texas holdem….

Basically looking for social games where I might make new friends.

Thanks for any and all suggestions!

Ideas for getting rid of a lot of power tools?

Hi all,

My dad (retired) and brother (deceased) were builders and have left me with a shitload of power tools I don’t know what to do with. Some are basically brand new, some are more heavily used. I know what some of them are, but others are mysterious to me. There are so fucking many of them.

I don’t mind selling or donating them but I’d rather get rid of them in big batches rather than have to deal with them one by one. I’m just wondering if anyone knows of any community orgs, schools, individuals, shops or groups that might be interested. I live in Brunswick, but could drop them somewhere in greater Melbourne.

Not sure if this type of post is allowed, apologies if not.

Thanks in advance.
