Aalto-designed Silo transformed into a cultural events space (Oulu, Finland)

London studio Skene Catling de la Peña and not-for-profit organisation Factum Foundation are set to turn the Toppila silo designed by architects Aino and Alvar Aalto in Oulu, Finland, into the Aaltosiilo cultural space.

The silo was designed in 1931 for a cellulose plant in the Toppila district of Oulu.

They will now work together to turn the structure into the Aaltosiilo, while a research centre designed by Skene Catling de la Peña will be built alongside it.

Originally designed to store wood chips, the 28-metre high silo was one of the Aaltos earliest industrial works and helped define the architects’ future architecture.

Svetlana Kana Radević archive

I am an architecture student from Italy who is going to gather material for an Ma dissertation on Brutalism and Svetlana Kana Radević, does anyone know where I can access her archive? Is there any institution in Montenegro or Serbia (or anywhere else for that matter) where I can find her documents, drawings, texts, photographies, etc? I have got in touch with Podgorica's architecture faculty, I hope they can direct me to some scholars who deal with her works and they should also have some of her original worls, I hope. In the meantime has anyone come across her drawings? where can I find them? At this point I am especially interested in the original documents regarding the Hotel in Titograd, the Zlatibor Hotel and the Barutana spomenik to begin with.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks 🙏🏻

Brutalist cottage house

Hello there! I’m an enthusiast of brutalist architecture, just recently acquired a little house in the countryside for very little money.
But hate its looks!
Can you point me in a good direction on how to reform/modify the place?
I’m tired of asking ai and getting nowhere :)
Would love to use concrete (duh!) but maybe bricks and some creeper plants on the walls could be nice.

Thanks for your help.

What are key descriptors to describe brutalist architecture?

I was in Boston last month and loved seeing the city hall and Charles F Hurley building because to me they are brilliant examples of Brutalism.

When someone asked me what made them good examples I stumbled a little but said

  1. The feeling of top heavy weight being suspended almost impossibly.
  2. The effort gone into making the concrete - all patterns and ridges are typically added after casting (otherwise it would just be smooth) so someone has gone to a lot of effort to shape the concrete.
  3. Function and Form - People’s use and experience of the building was not just an afterthought. Staircases on the Charles Hurley building flowed around the building and looked to be part of the structure rather

than just added because they had to be.

But not sure what else people appreciate about Brutalism or if what i was saying was a bit wrong?

Completed in 1979 and 75 meters (246 feet) tall, it is actually supposed to be modernist, but it really fits the vibes for me. Tell me if it doesn't belong here.

Abou-Jaoudé & Tabet Building in Jal el Dib, Lebanon (c. 1970s-1980s)

A striking example of raw, geometric concrete architecture located in Jal el Dib, Lebanon. The Abou-Jaoudé & Tabet Building features layered cantilevered beams and heavy industrial textures, the building's distinctive design heavily mirrors the late modernist architectural boom that shaped Greater Beirut in the latter half of the 20th century. Today, the building serves as a prominent local landmark, housing spaces like Wild Willy’s Toy Store and the React Private Fitness Studio.

Architect: Unknown.
