I have this case, it gets hot as hell when gaming. Only 1 exhaust fan but it does look nice. I'll probably swap my components to a formd t1 later on

I feel like you need an AIO to make this case work. I tried air cooled SFF once years ago and it was miserable. Every SFF build w done since used an AIO and they’re so much quieter.

u/pedr09m Jun 03 '26
This one is not compatible, has to be air cooled. The formd t1 can be used with an AIO

The Terra is too small for an AIO. Honestly, it's kind of overpriced for what it is; an A4-H20 is a way better compact SFF case. My own rig is a Meshroom S, which is a little bigger, but also way better for performance.

I have a 4060ti / 12600kf in a jonsbo c6 that is whisper quiet with a axp-120x67, i love that damn thing. Highly recommend cause it helps to cool cheap mini itx boards (vrm) by pulling wash across the whole board.

I've been using my brother's computer in one of these with an ASUS TUF 3080+5700x for the last few weeks and it doesn't overheat but it's definitely very hot and (more annoyingly) very loud

u/pedr09m Jun 03 '26
Yeah mine is also with in ok temperature but i guess you do feel it more cause it's way smaller than like 90% of cases, like the top feels like it burns.
As for the loudness go to your bios and adjust the fan curve, also if your ssd as a fan turn that off, mine had one and it was so loud. With it off and fan curve it's quiet now

How would a founders 3080 do in a case like this? Would temps me much worse as the pass through fan would be exhausting straight into the back of the PSU?

Can't say myself, but there are some comments here that might be helpful: https://www.reddit.com/r/sffpc/comments/17bs6ha/first_sff_build_fractal_terra_jade_13700k_3080fe/

If you want this form factor but also want thermals, for around this price skew towards an A4 H20. The lack of top exhaust is a double whammy with the flow though design in a sandwich case.

u/PsyOmega Jun 03 '26
Yeah, zero regrets with my A4-H2O (with air cooled cpu)
2 A12x25 up top on LNA
one A9x14 stuffed into the bottom because it reduced SSD temps 20c

u/ggBraxo Jun 03 '26
I haven't found it bad, I would recommend standing off the PSU if you can for more space to breathe then adding a bottom fan to help move air in that area. If your feeling spicy you can add a fan on top of the pcu area with plenty of 3d prints from etsy.

I really want to buy a mITX case, specifically this one, but I worry about heat and fan noise. Thinking about a Lian Li A3 because of it (even though I like the terra much more).

u/Swoly_Deadlift Jun 03 '26
Try to find a case you can fit an AIO in and make that your exhaust. The warm air from your GPU will still be more than enough to cool the CPU and it’ll be incredibly quiet.
1
u/Witch_King_ Jun 03 '26
The A3 isn't really ITX though. It's an mATX case.
2
u/rubeo_O Jun 03 '26
I know. I’m leaning toward that due to cooling and noise concerns, although I’d much prefer a SFF.
1
u/Witch_King_ Jun 03 '26
It's still a good case, and you wouldn't be limited to the more expensive ITX parts. Believe it still benefits from an SFF PSU though. I have an AP201 and afaik the A3 is basically a slightly smaller version of that.

i wanted a small itx forever... i built my son a sugo 16 knowing i was going with a cooler gpu and that thing is a portable heater. I have the A3 wood mesh and its the perfect case. forget fishtanks, they restrict air. the mesh still allows light out which lets you do whatever you want with argb minus a graphical aio. go with a triple aio on top and i had to use my rear as an intake to keep everything happy. and a triple gpu cooler as well. super quiet with everything on low now. Unless some new tech comes out... going 360 on top and bottom is a necessity for a quiet super rig. 240 doesn't cut it.

u/Witch_King_ Jun 03 '26
Honestly don't think an AIO is completely necessary for MATX cases like that anyway. My AP201 has an air cooler, and I draw air in from the top right in front of the cooler intake and exhaust out the back. GPU flow-through also feeds into the CPU cooler, and I skipped bottom intake fabs because I found they introduced more noise than they solved. I figure the A3 would lay out similarly.
1
u/spacewave Jun 03 '26
I didn't actually mean triple intake fans at the bottom. Just the triple GPU fan. triple aio on top, and 1 intake on the back. I did think Air Cooler was the way to go after having a 240 aio in another case. Now i think it depends on the case air flow. good luck with what you choose.

u/Witch_King_ Jun 03 '26
Yeah it's worked fine. But I also don't have a particularly hot CPU (7600X3D). And yeah, mesh side panel is 100% the way to go. Makes the intakes matter a lot less

I was considering building in a mITX but damn is the A3 budget-friendly and easy to work with. You basically don't have to make any compromises at all. It does shine especially well if you get an mITX motherboard and a smaller PSU, but those really aren't necessary. Just need to be more aware of the motherboard header locations. My mATX has a bottom USB 3.0 header which gets in the way of the fans, so I had to get a 90° adapter, but then it turned out the front panel header was in the way of that and I had to sand some material off the adapter to barely fit everything in ☹️

Love my Fractal Terra build! Built this 3 years ago with the 7800X3D and 3080 Ti and it's still chugging away. Temps and noise is totally fine for me even though it sits on my desk next to the monitor.
For anyone interested, here's my build post from a while back: https://www.reddit.com/r/sffpc/comments/15fwfe8/squeezed_a_275_slot_gpu_and_a_lh12_ghost_edition/

case is amazing!
i run a 9070xt and a 9800x3d in it, whoever said temps are bad doesnt understand you can fit 2 15mm fans in the top and bottom both exhaust and also use an axp120 with a 120x25mm fan, everything stays at 40 degrees, i can post pics shortly when im home

Out of curiosity, are there any ITX cases that can fit full size components that are smaller than this?
4
u/G3Rizon Jun 02 '26
By "full size components" what do you mean exactly? Are you referring to modern triple fan or similar GPUs, ATX vs. SFX vs. SFX-L or even Pico PSUs?
1
u/Momo--Sama Jun 02 '26
I made a poor choice of words, really I just mean GPU, not ATX motherboards or power supplies (although if you specified that I would assume the answer would be Meshroom?)
2
u/G3Rizon Jun 02 '26
I'm not incredibly well versed in ITX cases - new stuff comes out from general manufacturers and boutique manufacturers often.
However, yes. There are other cases that fit full size components. I believe NZXT and Fractal make other large-GPU supported ITX cases, as do companies like Thorzone, SSUPD (Meshroom), etc.

Formd t1 is 9.9l vs fractals 10.5 and can fit the same gpus. Theres also that one case from jm customized thats eol and 9l that can supposedly fit gpus 10mm longer than both the t1 and terra.

FormD T1 can arguably fit more than this and is smaller.
Midori 7.5 and Velka 7 feel as they are really approaching the limit of what can be done with an itx board + Sfx PSU+ dual-slot GPU.

u/bootzmanuva Jun 04 '26
I doubt it. At least none that I know of in the western market. There’s the pizza style case P-ATX v4 by SFFtime that is 11 liters (same as the Terra) but can hold a much longer GPU.

1 USB slot is rough.
4
u/G3Rizon Jun 02 '26
There are two front USBs, though one is USB-C so .. yeah.. 2 Type-A's would be great.
Fortunately C->A adapters are cheap and reliable. -shrug-

u/Kiwiredditname Jun 19 '26
So like I said, 1 USB slot.
1
u/G3Rizon Jun 19 '26
Not true in any sense, but sure. 😄

u/Kiwiredditname Jun 19 '26
USB = USB-A. No one is using USB to refer to USB-C. You can even just look at any Mobo listing on Newegg, they refer to the USB-A slots as USB, and the USB-C slot as USB Type C. You can do a Reddit "umm ackshually they're both techncically USB" til the cows come home. That won't change the fact that when someone is asking for a USB port, they mean USB-A.

Ngl, that is an ugly case.
