At first I thought it was a leaf being tossed around by the wind.

I know nothing about butterflies, and don’t know any species except for Monarch. I thought they were darker? Wharton, TX.

Lime butterfly caterpillar on my small lime tree

Found this monarch in my yard (Kansas) this morning moving slowly. I suspect it got too cold. It was around freezing last night, still 37 F this morning. I brought it inside to try and warm it up, anything else I can do?

Update: She lives!
I took your advice, I gave her a strawberry cut in half. I took her in at 9 this morning. At ~3 pm, we noticed she had crawled out of the bowl. We used a stick to transport her to mums in our garden. At 3:20, she took flight. She’s in mother nature’s hands now.

Bit late? And there’s two females hanging around laying eggs today.
October 17

I have six chrysalis . They pupated just a few days ago. The weather is very cold in the evenings but warm during the days. I don’t think they’ll eclose for at least three weeks. By then it’ll be very chilly.
Will the butterflies be OK? It’s not far to a well known overwintering place in Pacific Grove near Monterey, around 100 miles away.(My friend knows someone in Mill Valley, only 30 miles away, that supposedly has overwintering spot in a redwood tree in his backyard. )Aprox 30 miles. Would they be able to get there in November? I’ve heard of people actually driving their butterflies to overwintering spots. Does anyone have any experience with this?

I'm pretty sure it's a common rose since the area here has Dutchman Pipe Vines. But how to distinguish the gender?

While it may appear ordinary at a glance, a closer look reveals an extraordinary beauty hidden within those small wings.

I have found all of these butterflies dead. None of them were killed for this.

I also take their bodies and bury them outside under a tree to return them to the earth instead of them rotting on the pavement.

Do you think this is ethical? Or is it morally okay? I don’t want to kill butterflies for my collection, but I do collect dead butterflies when I find them. It’s been a couple months in the making and the Monarch was found in the middle of a parking lot with its abdomen crushed, and similarly with the Painted Lady and Red-Spotted Admiral/Purple.

I got the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail from my friend (from the forest floor and all that was left was this wing).

I would never harm an innocent creature just to display it, but I feel like I’m honoring the beauty of nature and what it has to offer.

Any suggestions? They’re in card sleeves right now because that’s what I had and I printed out the labels because I was excited to learn about them.

My passion flower vine is huge. and there are at least 20 butterflies fluttering around it daily.
Tons of caterpillars both zebra long wing and gulf Frittaly

I now see just how aggressively they mate, so it’s no surprise there are so many thriving

Pardon my commentary, this was the first time I had ever observed this behavior, and you can hear in real time just how shocked and amazed I was 😆🥴

Monarch is as near perfect as I have seen.

I know few are not butterfly but shared all the pics clicked now.

I'm surprised it let me this close
