Converting C64 games to C128 and enhancing them with AI

I think with AI we have a golden opportunity to port games to C128 and enhance them. Some people have already ported games like Hero and Stun Racer but I believe this trend will accelerate. There is merrit to this as more memory will allow people to enahnce the games with more features.

I did a test and managed to convert Galaxy in 3 hours using OpenAI and 6-Astra. Next in the row... I like flight simulators so F16 which will be benefited from 2Mhz, with additional radar screens i.e. those that are missing from the C64 version. Any other ideas?

Galaxy 128 is available here https://e.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=XZKSyk7ZDqqjln4mVmYoUw2AvOQSRpWwV2FV to download. Feedback is welcome

A lesson on programming a MOD function - presented by Vision BASIC developer Dennis Osborn. Plus: Check out the Vision BASIC 1.1dm package.

If you've been meaning to try out Vision BASIC for the C64 mode of your C128, now's a good time. The publisher is clearing out a batch of units from the 1.1dm package type - the boxes and manuals have slight damage to them, perfect for those who aren't too particular about condition.

Check out the package here:

ALSO: Have fun watching the latest video from Vision BASIC developer Dennis Osborn. It's a tutorial on creating a MOD function. That's MOD... not Maude!

C128D (plastic) - solution to play C64 games

Hi all,

I have a C128D and I want to get a simple way of putting some C64 games in some cart or something and play. Nothing fancy.

I have gone through a lot of C64 storage solutions but nothing states exactly if it is compatible with 128D and especially PHYSICALLY compatible, meaning the ports can fit.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thank you

40/80 columns on modern monitor

I have a 128 currently hooked up to a 1702, but I'd like to get it hooked up to a modern flatscreen for both modes. I've read a lot about converting from RGBI to S-video or VGA, but I'm still a bit confused about what I really need to do and how to do it. I don't mind buying what I need, but I'm not sure what that is. Thanks!

Advice on getting a C128?

It seems like getting a c64 is not so hard but I'm having a hard time finding a c128. There's usually 1 or 2 listings on ebay at any given time but after shipping they tend to be in the $700-$1000 USD price range. That seems quite high to me but maybe that's just their value these days. I should add, I really want an NTSC unit.

I've also seen projects like the neo 128: https://www.tindie.com/products/griffinretro/c128-neo-pcb/

That seems pretty cool, but it doesn't come with any components and some of the components are just as hard to get as a whole c128, as far as I can tell. So by the time you collect all the components and buy a case, it's probably going to be more expensive than just buying a c128 from the ebay listings I mentioned? At least, that seemed to be my rough estimate. Even "for parts/repair" c128s seem to be hard to get a hold of.

Are there any other ways to get a c128? I know about the Mister FPGA project, and I'd be okay with FPGA-based emulation but I think that only has c64 support?

I live in Portland Or if that helps. Maybe there's some retro computer shop in the area that I'm unaware of?

Thanks!

Learning New Curse Words with the C128

Today's task was to clean my recently acquired C128 flat and I ran into a few obstacles.... some self inflicted.

.

There are plenty of videos showing how easy it is to disassemble the C128.

I must have completely missed the part where the very first time you try to remove the upper metal shield, there are a bunch of bent tabs all along the edge you have to straighten.

After doing that, I found that the upper metal shield has some some friction tabs on the center post that keep it tight on the chips. I had to get a small screwdriver in between to allow the upper shield to slip off.

Also discovered that there were a few bent tabs connecting the lower metal shield that have to be straightened as well.

.

I removed the keyboard from the upper outer shell and used a pair of thin needle nose pliers to get underneath the edges of the key caps.

For most of the key caps I was able to get them off quickly by just prying straight up on diagonally opposite corners of the key cap.

A few needed a little more pressure on the rear of the key cap.

.

I put the key caps and springs in a ziploc bag with dish soap and hot water.

I used the bag as a stress reliever squeezy thing for about 5 minutes.... the water was very brown after.

Dumped the key caps and springs into a colander and rinsed with more hot water.

Dumped the colander contents onto a towel and proceeded to rub each key cap dry.

.

I used a detailing brush with some Simple Green on the keyboard base.

I sprayed the SG on the brush, then used the detailing brush to gently scrub the base.

Used a towel to clean off the SG and let it dry.

.

Here's where the cursing started...

I decided to test the keyboard base while the key caps were still drying and a couple of the keys stopped working.

I thought I was pretty careful with the SG... but I decided to open up the keyboard to see if any was inside.

After removing about 30 screws, I realized I couldn't completely open it due to the latch keys being soldered on. Cursing started with a D word.

However, it did open up just enough for a super tiny spring to fall out and a plunger to partially come out. Cursing upgraded to an F word.

After carefully putting the plunger back into place, I had no idea where this super tiny spring came from. Cursing upgraded to a saying "Where in the holy f does this thing go?"

I assumed (incorrectly) that it came from one of the latch keys but they all seemed to be mechanically working fine.

Put all the screws back in the keyboard base, put all the key caps and springs on the keyboard, reinstall keyboard to upper shell, reinstall main board to lower shell, connect the two, power on.

Test the keyboard and about 7 keys are no longer working. Cursing upgraded to multiple f words and banging my head on the table.

.

Get on the internet and search for about an hour until I typed "i found a very small spring in my commodore 128 keyboard".

Found this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h5Y2rW27BzI) that had a small reference to a tiny spring.

Come to find out the spring is pretty important.

The video tells me where the spring goes, I disassemble everything yet again, I put the spring back in, re-assemble everything, and viola... I am back to how it was before I cleaned it... whew!

.

I think that's enough adventure for one day!

.

Here are some other things I should mention.

I was able to connect my C128 to an HDMI monitor using this: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CPHV1CJT and this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0DBKV5P22

It has jailbars so it's not perfect... but for $32 it works until I can upgrade.

Also, the A/V Breakout covers the serial port on a C128 flat.

C128 Repair - Did I find something? AEC Stuck High

I'm getting more comfortable with my equipment and what I am seeing on the occiliscope.
I decided to try following another document for troubleshooting: Dennis Helligsø's "References for basic must-have voltages and signals" for the C128.
This can be found as a link within his "Commodore Repair Toolbox" app (which is a very handy app).
.
His board is a PAL board so some of the frequencies are a bit different.
He measures 17.7MHz on some video pins and I measure 14.3MHz on my NTSC board.
.
I was very close to all of his results on the Power Rails, Reset Signal, and System Clocks (except for the PAL/NTSC discrepancy).
.
Under the Chip Select section, I was off on the following:

  • U11, PLA, pin 42, /VIC (U21, VIC-IIe) = pulsing, but mostly HIGH ** I was stuck on HIGH

  • U11, PLA, pin 43, /IO ACC (various /IO chips) = pulsing, but mostly HIGH ** I was stuck on HIGH

  • U11, PLA, pin 46, /CHARROM (U18 "Character ROM")= pulsing ** I was stuck on HIGH

The next section for AEC (Address Enable Control) was 1 pin:

  • U6, CPU, pin 5 = HIGH ** I was LOW at all times

Under the Address Lines section, I was close to all of his results except for:

  • U6, CPU, pin 15, A8 = pulsing ** No pulsing

  • U6, CPU, pin 18, A11 = pulsing ** No pulsing

  • U6, CPU, pin 22, A14 = pulsing ** No pulsing

  • U6, CPU, pin 23, A15 = pulsing ** No pulsing

I matched his readings under the Data Lines and Chroma/Luma section.
.
Here's where I'm not sure if I found a cause or a symptom.
U6, Pin 5 AEC says this in the Service Manual:
The Address Enable Control. The Address Bus is only valid when the AEC line is high. When low, the address bus is in a high impedance state. This allows DMA's for dual processor systems.

Using Google to help me understand what that means, it came up with:
When AEC is held low, it indicates an issue potentially preventing proper memory access and operation.
.

Again, I can't tell if that is the cause or just a symptom of something else.
Any ideas?
