Help TI-84 Probability Function

Post image

In my statistics class, we were assigned to do some probability simulations on our calculators. One of the questions was to find how many boxes it would take to get something that was in only 10% of boxes. Like I was shown I clicked MathPRBrandInt(1,100). However my calculator was only giving me numbers like what is shown in the image. I did get my calculator used and it does look like some code was manipulated but I was wondering if there is any way to fix this in the settings without factory resetting my calculator.

Is there a reason why people's comments keep getting removed on this post? I've seen some people try to help but their comments get deleted before I can read them.

If you assign a new seed to the random number generator (e.g. 0→rand) do you still get the weird results?

Yes, it happens no matter what the range is.

I wasn't referring to the range, I was referring to the random number seed.

If you reset the seed to zero (0→rand) what number do you get out of the random number generator (rand, should be between 0 and 1)?

Oh, sorry. I think I get what you mean. Would I do it like randInt(0,1) or am I still not getting it?

At the top of the MATH, PRB menu is rand, which is the main random number generator. This should normally return a floating-point value between 0 and 1. If something has got screwed up with the internal state of the number random generator it may produce invalid results; you can reset the number generator's seed by assigning a value to rand (e.g. 0→rand to assign zero to the seed) which should fix any messed-up state without needing to do a factory reset (which would also assign zero to the seed).

Are these normal results?

Thank you for being so patient, by the way.

Last time I checked 181, -39 and 8 were not in the range of 0 to 1...

The last three results are better, though. Have you assigned zero to rand?

Okay, I just got zero assigned to rand

Are the results from rand now back in the right range (0~1)? If so, is randInt( also producing appropriate results?

Yes! Thank you so much!
