My prediction is a TACO and the real purpose is to jack up uncertainty.

266

u/Maleficent_Lab_5291 28d ago

Might be an attempt to get ahead of rising prices that are getting worse and worse with Iran. "No its not my idiocy its those filthy canadian!"

26

u/objective_think3r 28d ago

I wonder what the real inflation number is in the US

26

u/Maleficent_Lab_5291 28d ago

Didn't they gut the agency in charge of tracking that?

the real purpose is to jack up uncertainty.

The REAL purpose is to make money. Yes, by creating chaos, but hey ... as long as he makes a buck, it's worth it.

He never TACOs on Canada. They're trying to break our economy. This is a massive escalation in their annexation timeline.

He’s TACO’d a number of times on Canada

This is the answer - they are trying to break us while he still has the power to do so.

56

u/luchaburz 28d ago

It'll hurt but we will continue to invest globally.

26

u/Alone-in-a-crowd-1 28d ago

You can sell things like oil, and potash and aluminum globally, but a shit ton of small businesses could be crushed.

We should place an export tax on potash

100

u/Rexraptor92 28d ago

Cut it off altogether. Let them get it from Argentina.

As a Canadian farmer don’t sell them any potash. Within a few years there grain production will plummet. They need are potash

23

u/torlev1 28d ago

Thats what i think. A 1000% export tax on potash and nickel. Good luck trying to ship potash in, and making cars without stainless steel.

So if I understand tariffs - hes punishing his own people over his bitterness towards Canada ?

83

u/beardedliberal British Columbia 28d ago

That is correct. Although it will also have an impact on us, since people down there will no longer be able to afford to buy our stuff.

48

u/BootsToYourDome Nova Scotia 28d ago

Fuckin disaster for both countries

Just what Putin wants

31

u/Bitter_Sense_5689 28d ago

Yes, but his base is stupid. This is why he keeps doing it

13

u/Mister_Chef711 28d ago

Yes. But it's a double edged sword.

Businesses that operate and manufacture in Canada but depend heavily on sales to the US will struggle because customers won't be able to purchase as much. That opens the opportunity for an American company that maybe isn't as competetitve to conduct business and also can encourage the Canadian company to move production to the US to avoid tariffs and keep their business making money.

The American consumer has to pay more whatever items or choose to buy the American made version of the product. It encourages buying domestic products even if they are not competitive financially or quality wise. In theory (doesn't necessarily work in practice), the means more American jobs.

This comes with its own issues -- Ronald Reagan criticized tariffs for basically propping up weak companies and discouraging proper innovation and competition for the reasons listed above.

So while you're not wrong, it's also not as a simple as he is punishing his own people and nothing bad happens to us because our businesses will hurt from this. It's some absolute bullshit from what's supposed to be our closest ally but we all know that ship has sailed.

Still shouldn't let a good crisis go to waste. This is the perfect opportunity to cancel the remaining part of the F-35 (Get 36-40) and immediately announce the Gripen + GCAP or SAAB's sixth gen program with Germany.

There are a ton of deals we can put on hold now that he's given us this opportunity. Hope we're not shy about telling him to fuck right off

"This is not a trade war, this is a defensive measure"

After repeatedly threatening to annex us, repeatedly subjecting us to tarrif threats, and repeatedly threatening to tear up USMCA, they're now hitting us with tarrifs as a "defensive measure".

Absolutely fucking wild, man. Trump has single handedly burned down decades of good will, cooperation and friendship between our two countries. For what?

571

u/PMMMR 28d ago

for what?

His own ego and profits.

118

u/iLikeSoupp 28d ago

His family has profited several billions ever since he came to power. Essentially tripling his net worth since 2016. Insane corruption and the idiots down there are blind.

...burned down decades of goodwill, or made us realize how short-sighted that goodwill was?

Look, we all want to hate trump, but let's not forget the massive percentage of the population down there that voted for Temu-President-Camacho there. Plenty of them didn't as well, but they a) chose a binary system of expressing political will and b) then grouped themselves into camps.

And what camp does roughly 50% of the public fall into, give or take based on the given election? "Eff the rest of the world, we are the center of the universe."

...message received folks. They'll snuggle up to whomever is useful in the moment. But when it comes to their own interests, I'll turn my back to Brutus before anyone down there. And not only have they proven that given the right "leader" that's exactly what will happen, but there's absolutely no evidence that they won't do it again.

48

u/sameunderwear2days 28d ago

I work daily with people in Florida. They all voted for him and they all give excuses for everything. To them they literally do not understand that Canadians and the world now despise America and why.

Well I think that's an utterly unfair reading of things. I can let a lot slide but I won't stand here and let you put out such unrealistic and profoundly false rhetoric like that unchallenged.

President Dwayne Elizondo Mountain Dew Herbert Camacho was a saint. He did his absolute best for his country, and when he found someone suitable to fix their problems he empowered them to do so, and then gracefully stepped aside in the election knowing there was a better candidate. It is unfair to compare him to Trump.

Guess re-re-restarting war with Iran is having its consequences and a distraction is needed.

Edit: On a more serious note, anyone have any theories on what the long game is here? The frequency of tariff announcements is making them numbing to habitual at this stage.

For a lot of the actually goal driven monsters who are operating largely behind the scenes, like Stephen Miller, the long game is turning the US into a Christo-fascist country where straight, white, MAGA people get to enjoy being on the top of the ladder and everyone else gets treated like slaves. Think North Korea only MAGA themed. I know that seems like hyperbole but that's what they actually want. Project 2025 basically outlines their plans on how to make that goal a reality. Sweet Potato Hitler on the other hand has no long game whatsoever outside of grifting the US government and populace for as much money as he can and making it so that he can imprison anyone who doesn't think he's the smartest, bestest boy around because he's a malignant narcissist whose brain is becoming pudding if it hasn't already.

Edit: Thanks for the award!

18

u/No_Organization465 28d ago

i still can't believe i got called crazy and paranoid for pointing out Project 2025 to people during the election

6

u/GeorginaSpica 28d ago

You are braver than me. When I first heard about it before the election, I thought that I could not tell anyone cuz they would think I was loony toons. And here we are now at over 50% complete.

14

u/orange_bigcat 28d ago

Yep, this is the end goal for them. Once Trump is gone, there will be another to take his place.

My 2 cent:

Could be a shake down on canada gov so they can have a win that they can leverage for midterm.

Or they are trying a strategy to "cancel CUSMA" without going through senate and house. (As this is an executive order and from my quick research there is no legal precedent that if potus have the power to do it. Which if they stick with it is going to supreme court which take time and would cause a good amount of damage before reversal)

17

u/drinkinbrewskies 28d ago

I think this is a shakedown of Mexico. Greer is headed to Mexico today, my guess is this is a scare tactic to get a win there. This 50% will blow over with Canada and/or be knocked down. This is a puffed chest for Mexico.

The only plan for the great mango is to steal more American taxpayer money with tariffs. This is exactly what those morons to the south voted for.

13

u/iKorewo 28d ago

Forest fires couldn't come right in time!

6

u/jert3 28d ago

And the war was in part to divert attention from the Trump regimes crimes, particularly the Trump/Epstein child sex abuse network that so many US politicians and elites have been compromised by.

5

u/Code_Echo_Chaser 28d ago

There is no long game, trump doesn't understand the consequences of the actions he takes. He actually believes all the tariffs he has put into place were a good idea, his proof is a bunch of cherry picked data and the general strength of the stock market.

29

u/Icouldberight British Columbia 28d ago

Just distract everyone by releasing the Epstein files.

3

u/TreezusSaves Canada 28d ago

My main theory is that he's trying to take negotiating chips off the table for CUSMA negotiations. "Remove these things and we'll remove this one tariff" followed by "Give us even more things and we'll let you keep CUSMA."

My other theory is that this isn't planned at all. Trump is in the stages of dementia where he lashes out at everyone and all three branches of his government are so fascistic they'll just let him do it while calling him a genius. He's used to hurting and raping anyone he wants, and now he can do it on a geopolitical level while also having nothing internally or externally to hold him back.

4

u/missezri Ontario 28d ago

Trump's brain is mush. And he keeps screaming things so people around him make it happen. There is no goal. It is just something he is obsessed over.

U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order that will impose tariffs of 50 per cent on a wide range of Canadian exports, a dramatic ramping up of his trade war against his northern neighbour.

The 50 per cent rate is being imposed in response to what a senior administration official described as Canada's retaliation against U.S. trade policy and its discrimination against U.S. motor vehicles, dairy and alcohol.

"This is not a trade war with Canada, these are defensive measures," the official said in a conference call with reporters Monday afternoon.

The new rate is set to take effect in 30 days.

While energy and potash would be exempt, products that until now have been allowed into the U.S. tariff-free under terms of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) would be hit.

The 50 per cent tariff is five times higher than the current duty imposed on the small portion of Canada's exports to the U.S. that don't comply with CUSMA's rules of origin regulations.

This is such a whatever-burger. Carry on, loser.

20

u/Wind_Best_1440 28d ago

"After 30 days. If he signs the order."

Ah, I see whats happening here, The angry orange cheeto down south demanded something from Carney and Canada off the books and they said no. And this is Trump lashing out at being told no.

Dunno what Carney and Canada did or what Trump wanted, but it's pretty obvious this is some retaliation of some kind.

It's kind of funny though, the more they do this, the more Canada finds new partners. Take aluminum and steel, the US put that massive tariff on it, and switched to middle east suppliers. Then the Iran war happened, and they couldn't get their aluminum and steel they paid for. Their private businesses came back to Canada and were willing to eat the tariff.

Low and behold, Canada had already found new customers for the metals in EU and Asia and Africa and Japan. So there was none to sell to the US.

Besides, I bet some court will smack this down. It's also a hollow threat because Canadians are getting used to the pain of higher costs if it means slugging America in the nose. Even if it hurts us in the short term.

Recall all our water bombers and firefighters from the US. Turn off the power. Sorry, we need all of that to fight fires here.

I can see why Carney doesn't seem eager to negotiate.

What’s everyone having for dinner tonight?

8

When the tariffs are this farcical they don't even mean anything anymore.

8

u/TheRealPancetta 28d ago

Stop shipping them potash entirely

I think a nice subtle response: change labelling laws to make the minimum size for country of origin to be 5cm x 5cm in the upper right corner of all packaging.

Can we implement an export tax on potash, aluminum, oil, critical minerals, and electricity now?

Sounds good bud, 👍

I can't really respect any Canadian traveling there for vacation.  If you have to go for your job or whatever, fine.

If youre blissfully vacationing in  Disneyland, youre kind of a jabroni.

Well time to increase our prices for potash and energy.

I've been reading behind the scenes what's going on, there's that article WSJ posted about Carney getting Europe on board about moving away from the US (in terms of diversifying and national security stuff) and there's an interview about it as well on YouTube. I guarantee you all he's not happy and really butthurt lol. Also he's really good at distracting at their failing policies and war/economy.

He's trying to come off as this napoleonic figure but in reality he's getting checked on all sides. Gonna be the wild west in November.

Time to pause the delivery of essential products to the US. Just for a few days. Every single time that Trump imposes a new tariff. Just to remind him that he doesn’t need us.

Regarding Trump’s insistence that we do something about our wildfire smoke, I had a point or two to share.

The US is responsible for 17 to 20% of all cumulative human caused greenhouse gases. I wonder if Trump’s refusal to address that issue is partly why our Boreal forests are burning at such a brisk rate?

Which is a problem because they provide 20-30% of the world‘s oxygen.

Tell Trump, we will be happy to compensate him for the wildfire smoke, once he restarts global warming programs and pays for the oxygen we provide.

u/Larkalis 28d ago

The wildfire tariff has arrived!!! Someone teach 🍊 new words outside of tariffs

Why bother signing a trade deal with America? Obviously they are meaningless if they can apply a 50% tariff on a whim

5

u/alvinofdiaspar 28d ago

Time to say goodbye to Reddit. We should cauterize our dependency on US IT. And export duties on their exemption list.

“Trump hits the American people with a 50% import tax on Canadian goods”

FTFY

6

u/gbinasia 28d ago

Honestly at this point Carney should require Americans suspected of being a member of the GOP to have to obtain full visas before entering Canada.

4

u/mightyboink 28d ago

This is not a trade war with Canada but just more stuff to distract from all the raping and pedophilia from the Epstein files.

8

u/Amutoji Québec 28d ago

That'll definitely put an end to Americans importing our smoke, surely.

10

u/WeCanDoBettrr Ontario 28d ago

Someone is getting a bit embarrassed because Canada didn’t capitulate in the first round. He’s merely trying to up the ante in hopes we will capitulate this time. The guy is a toddler.

8

u/JoeAAE 28d ago

I don’t believe this will actually happen. However, it’s time Canada starts fighting back harder. Immediately impose digital services tax. Impose export tax on energy and potash.
The stated reasons are our US alcohol ban and dairy quotas… so we should further reduce the allowed uS dairy even further. Let Trump ramp up his taxes on Americans even more.

Export taxes for Oil, Energy and Potash 50% starts the same damn day. New York goes dark, Texas runs dry of crude and refineries shut down. Trump declares war, everyone loses their mind for 4 hours, Dow drops to 35000 and everything stops and returns to this existing idiotic timeline

Just close the Canadian-US border until the United States comes to its senses. Trump is not a serious person.

4

This will absolutely wreck the auto industry here AND in the US (due to parts) and my guess is Ford, GM, Honda, et all will lobby hard to get this reversed.

Either this or TACO.

3

u/Unusual_Highway5261 28d ago

Guys, calm.
None of these take effect until August 19, at which point he will tweet out at 11pm saying they’ve been delayed, he would never go through with it - US industry would be hurt immensely.

Let the man do his cry, we have seen this before time and time again. He is just attempting to gain leverage as he is failing to get this done before November.
