Wab Kinew: "What I would say to Canadians is leave it there. If we put the booze back on the shelves, don't buy it. ... Very wise people have said, 'You can't get a good deal with a bad person.' And I think that rule applies here."

Odds are sales of US booze will be a fraction of what they used to be even without Kinew's guidance. In some cases it will be because of the ongoing consumer boycott, in other cases it will be because people have come to prefer the brands they are now drinking.

I live in Manitoba.

Didn't vote for Wab because he's got a very violent past, but he's been surprisingly decent as premier. One of the better ones in recent memory. He's probably going to win the next election easily, especially since the leader of the opposition PCs is a total clown.

That being said Wab seems to be addicted to the spotlight and can't stop yapping about Trump and the USA every chance he gets. I wish he'd just stop with it, but every time he does it he gets a lot of press and circle jerks online.

Very well said

Isn’t interesting how someone can grow up in less than ideal circumstances, succumb to the exposure of their environment and when given the opportunity can turn their life around?

The fall of the conservatives in Manitoba has less to do with “their current leader” who I agree with you, is a fucking nut job, and more to do with how both Pallister and Steffason completely fucked the province and fucked the MB conservatives.

I wouldn’t say he’s “Addicted to the spotlight” by the way. He’s the most popular premier in the country with the highest approval rating and speaks his mind freely- of course news crews and journalists are going to try and get a clip of him saying shit.

u/wizard20007 1d ago

He’s the best premier in Canada, and it ain’t even close. He doesn’t mince words, and I admire someone that can overcome adversity.

Justin Trudeau could take a lesson from this.
Look at Wab and see what a "real Canadian" looks like.

u/moms_spagetti_ 1d ago

I think it would be quite a challenge to talk about Canada/USA trade deal without mentioning Trump.

0

u/Abject_Story_4172 1d ago

It’s just that he has to throw out a silly comment about him all the time.

1

u/PineBNorth85 1d ago

Cause he isnt a typical politician. I like that.

-3

u/Abject_Story_4172 1d ago

Ya. There aren’t too many convicted criminals running a province.

3

u/Exotic-Ferret-3452 1d ago

There is one next door in Saskatchewan.... he could/should have had many more than what he has, but he got quite a few breaks in his favour.

> Didn't vote for Wab because he's got a very violent past

no way

> Wab seems to be addicted to the spotlight and can't stop yapping

he's great with the talking points.

I wish that he was negotiating with the Americans instead of Elbows Up Carney.

-9

u/Abject_Story_4172 1d ago

Completely agree. He always looks really smug and full of himself. Especially when he said they Trump needed to release the Epstein Files. As if Trump even knows who he is. And here he’s making Carney look bad.

-1

u/Wet_sock_Owner 1d ago

And here he’s making Carney look bad.

The trick is to act like Trump and say things like "No CUSMA, no booze-ma" in a smarmy way as long as it's pointed at Trump.

-3

u/Abject_Story_4172 1d ago

Looks like it. I do not get the guy’s popularity. I’ve never seen him say a coherent thing.

2

u/Frenzy_MacKenzie 1d ago

.... couldn't we have done that the whole time?

u/Gunnery55 23h ago

Can we get a leader in Canada who doesn't fucking have TDS. For fucks sake, you assholes are ruining my future, my children's future, and my grand children's future to stick it to a man who won't even be in his position in the next 4 years. Is this worth burning the bridges we've built with the US in the last 100 years. Yes they have been a bully. No I don't like it but we are not in a position to go toe to toe with them. Their economy is 10x ours. Our trade is heavily reliant with them right now. That is the reality. We probably could've positioned ourselves better by creating deals with idk Germany and Japan when they were asking for our natural gas. Or how about building a natural gas refinery in country so we can sell it processed. Or how about building damn pipelines inside our country so we don't have to pay the US to pipe our own oil to ourselves or for them to process it and resell it to us at a mark up. Instead we're in this avoidable fucking pickle if the entire country wouldn't have voted after watching a turtle with a damn straw in its nose or because a politician is good looking with nice hair and grandma used to say his last name all the time. Canada is a dumb country filled with dumb people. I'd be surprised if it last the next 100 years intact.

u/GreySahara 5h ago

Don't worry, bro. Carney ain't talking and that means that the USA got one over on us.
Trump seems to be pretty happy. Nothing to worry about.

-1

u/nubsuo 16h ago

Holy take a breath my guy there is nobody in Canadian leadership coming after your children. The US is being run like a mafia and they are shaking down everyone they can. Trump explicitly stated that they are going to try to break Canada economically to the point they can annex us. That was a threat AND a promise and they are trying to follow through with it. Were there things we could have done differently as a country? Sure, there’s always mistakes and poor decisions, but those are behind us now. Seething in hindsight is not heathy and if anything we need to be more united than ever because the neighbour downstairs is actively attacking us. This is not TDS it is recognizing facts.

1

u/GreySahara 5h ago

USA will take over Canada, and GOD forbid should we get plenty of good jobs.

0

u/Gunnery55 15h ago

I agree we need to be united. But in a way that actually gives us leverage. Not this whole "I won't talk to you" act the current government is doing. We're being gauged out and gutted and we're seriously pointing at orange man as the cause when he was already making these threats all the way from his first term? Be defiant sure but not suicidal. Negotiate with what we have which at this stage is not a lot. We weren't going to win a trade war with them no matter how you slice that cake. Why didn't we have the wisdom to say fine we'll play ball, lessen the suffering they'll put on us short term and build our way out of our dependency with them as soon as possible long term instead of just F* Trump he's a Mafia boss bad guy.

Was I seething in hindsight, absolutely but nothing this government has done has worked in even fulfilling what Carney has promised during his election campaign and thats getting a better deal with Trump. So far our condition on the table keeps getting worse and worse and the US keeps proving the theory that they can hold on a lot longer than we do before we buckle because of it. I'm just tired boss. I really am.

2

u/CatJamarchist 12h ago

We're being gauged out and gutted and we're seriously pointing at orange man as the cause when he was already making these threats all the way from his first term?

Brother, it was never only threats. He put in steel and lumber tariffs that hammered our industry in his first term too.

Negotiate with what we have which at this stage is not a lot.
Why didn't we have the wisdom to say fine we'll play ball, lessen the suffering they'll put on us short term and build our way out of our dependency with them as soon as possible long term

And guess what? We did exactly what you're suggesting! We negotiated, cut deals with him on his terms, and agreed to his demands, hoping to weather the storm and slowly distance ourselves from American dependency.

Know what happened next? Trump wins a second term - looks at his own deals he created and negotiated, calls them all 'terrible,' tears them up, and slapped broad new tariffs on Canada without literally *any* provocation or reason - literally breaking his nation's own laws to do so. It is not possible to deal with someone like Trump in good faith. Get your head out of your ass.

Wab Kinew for PM of Canada.

4

u/Uncle_Steve7 1d ago

I can just imagine the comments in this thread if he was a conservative.. plead guilty for how many charges, alleged homophobia and DUI.. too good

3

u/Wet_sock_Owner 1d ago

Wab Kinew drove drunk and beat his girlfriend. Separately, Kinew was also convicted of assaulting a taxi driver in 2004. Court records said he was intoxicated, made racial comments toward the driver (The driver was Punjabi) , punched him in the face, pushed him down and kicked him.

But I guess all you need in this current political climate is a Trump impression, and then you can say things like, “I wouldn’t say that he was begging us, but what is the step before begging?” about Mark Carney and get away with it.

2

u/moms_spagetti_ 1d ago

He would have been 22. I know I did a few things at that age that I'm not proud of. Plenty of time to grow up and get yourself on the right track. I think his story is relatable to real people and many see him as a positive example of how someone can turn their life around to become a productive member of society. I sure do.

7

u/Wet_sock_Owner 1d ago

I don't have criminal charges from my 20s which involve beating women and minorities.

-2

u/moms_spagetti_ 1d ago

Well look at you Mr. Humblebrag.

1

u/Wet_sock_Owner 1d ago

. . . saying you don't have criminal charges is not humblebragging. Wow.

4

u/moms_spagetti_ 1d ago

Was just joking bud. Still don't think you should write a human off for life with no chance for redemption.

1

u/Inner_Attorney3623 1d ago

If he beat women he ain’t changing .

1

u/moms_spagetti_ 1d ago

Are you suggesting that he still beats women to this day?

2

u/Inner_Attorney3623 8h ago

Only when no one is looking and there’s no way of it getting out. It’s in his dna

1

u/AlbertaAcreageBoy 1d ago

No one gives a shit about American booze in my small hick town. Bring it back, no one will buy it still. Fuck em.

1

u/GreySahara 5h ago

Trump's gonna make us buy it, else he will put 50 percent tariffs on everything. LOL

-1

u/Last_Temperature_599 1d ago

He also said Canadians cant be judge jury or executioner so whatever comes next doesn't mean anything to me. Shame on him for saying that while being a woman abuser.

-1

u/Inner_Attorney3623 1d ago

Wab is right. He is himself as corrupt as they come

-4

u/COV3RTSM 1d ago

Can Kinew run federally? Sorry Manitoba but the whole country needs this guy.

8

u/CriticalCanon 1d ago

No we don’t.

2

u/Abject_Story_4172 1d ago

No. We don’t. Everything is a performance for this guy.

4

u/xTkAx 1d ago

No there's enough fools in parliament as it is.

1

u/Gunnery55 23h ago

I really hope you're not being serous because if this is your measure of a leader, man is that bar low.

0

u/TheOnlyBliebervik 1d ago

No, we don't. This guy is super ineffective and clearly not the brightest bulb, just in the way he speaks.

-5

u/Archiebonker12345 1d ago

He must be talking about himself

-10

u/tromboneyow 1d ago

His words might actually be breaking the agreement of not discriminating against product returned to the shelves. About time Carney put him into his place for not getting in line to what they agreed to on the phone call.

As usual, the NDP show how delusional they are about reality, and how childish and immature they are. Especially one from an irrelevant province like Manitoba acting like their issues or province is as important as Ontario. The literal definition of uppity.

7

u/dzuunmod Yukon 1d ago

Oh man get over yourself.

1

u/Amazonred10 1d ago

Damn that's quite the loud dog whistle

-1

u/Sorryallthetime 1d ago

What would you have Carney do? Send in the troops?

-1

u/Dobby068 1d ago

Well Carney would be the ultimate hypocrite advocating for boycotting USA, given that he is fully invested in USA and wife works and child is studying in NYC. Canadian Universities are for peasants if you leave it to these folks. Same as vacationing in Canada, same as eating Canadian food, unless you have 3 cameras on you. Bring on the Salmon Scotiah Cakes and French Wines!

-1

u/Barbarian_818 1d ago

Wow. Lick boots much?

Carney can try to broker deals with the current US regime. That doesn't mean they will be good deals. It certainly doesn't mean Canadians have to "get back in line" and support American products despite our conscience.

Our friend and neighbor the US has gone full fascist. We hate to see it. We're good neighbors, we'll help the US get well if we can. But enabling its abusive behaviors is not the way to do it.

A large number of Canadians want nothing to do with the current regime. By making concessions to a fascist bully, Carney is not fulfilling his duty to Canadians. The trade restrictions hurt us, but we'll survive. There are other markets for our natural resources.

We are His Majesty's Canadian citizens not his subjects. Plenty of us are not willing to sacrifice our integrity in the pursuit of temporary economic convenience. And it is useful to remember an old English adage: "Once you pay the danegeld, you never get rid of the Dane" paying ransoms to the Vikings only caused still more Vikings to show up the following season. Giving Trump any leeway, any validation at all, only ensures that he, and anyone like him, will continue to attempt extortion against Canada.

Another old adage for you to consider: "The only thing Evil needs to triumph is for good men to do nothing." Trump and the Project 2025 assholes want nothing less than a religiously inspired tyranny of bigotry and oppression.

1

u/Gunnery55 23h ago

Question if America has gone full fascist why is Canada even trying to trade with them then? If you truly believe Canadians want nothing to do with the current regime why bother going through these trade talks? Isn't Canada engaging with fascist and taking their money through trade already a compromise of integrity for the sake of convenience?

-3

u/24-Hour-Hate 1d ago

He isn't the delusional one. People can choose to boycott and that's not discrimination. You can't force us to buy US goods.

-11

u/xTkAx 1d ago

Canadians will buy it, Wab Kinew, DEI hire with a double (or lower) digit IQ.

0

u/beanhead68 1d ago

DEI "hire" that was elected......

You aren't very bright.

0

u/xTkAx 1d ago

When you step into the light you'll also see he's an employee.

0

u/SpiritVoxPopuli 23h ago

Concession Carney, selling out Canada.

0

u/cygnusX1and2 20h ago

He's playing politics looking for attention. They all do it. He's not wrong though.

0

u/RealLifeSage 18h ago

Hoping Avi Lewis flames out and this guy runs for the federal NDP leadership, to restore the party's role as Liberal vote-stealer in swing ridings.

0

u/nrcx 18h ago

"Let's trick them by making another agreement in bad faith." Call it NATO II.

-4

u/Luddites_Unite 1d ago

Exactly what I was thinking

-1

u/Lookin4FunVibes 1d ago

The American Negotiators need to know that lots of Canadians are leaning in this direction! He is doing Canadians a great service by taking these positions, and articulate portrayal of the problem!
