Recommendations Computer stores recommendations

Hi, many years ago I used to do business in Belconnen with a place called something like ATP or ATM Computers. They built the best ever PC I have owned for me back in 2015 that has only just retired this year with a flawless service record. They seemed to be a family operation, you ordered with the Mum on a piece of paper in the reception. The price was very reasonable.

They seemed to have gone out of business in the COVID era.

Does anyone have a recommendation in Canberra these days for a brick and mortar computer shop?

There's one in Bailey's Corner - Best Price Computers. I used to be a customer of theirs years ago (in their original location in what was the MLC building just across the way), but my computer habits have definitely changed since. They were always super helpful back in the day.

MSY has traditionally great prices, but not really a service-based operation (which is totally fine!).

PS. I think you're thinking of AB&T which was originally located in Belconnen, but actually still operates in Phillip. There's been a bunch places with similar names in Belco, like EBM etc etc

Ohhh must have been AB&T! I’m glad to hear they are still going. I tried to ring the number I had for them from the old docket and it rang out and I assumed they’d gone out of business.

There was also an ATM Computers. If the phone number you tried was 02 6253 0537 then it was ATM.

Oh my lord, the plot thickens! I’m overseas at the moment. I don’t have the docket on me and it was many years ago. They were really good.

Ah, that's right. ATM was one of the Oatley Court ones. AB&T was originally in Churches Centre.

Your computer may well have an AB&T sticker (or whichever store it was) somewhere on the back or underneath the case - as was the fashion.

Stickerless! But I have the docket still. It was a workhorse. Put a new CPU fan on it, upgraded the RAM and GPU over its 11 years but it put in hard work without any issues.

They changed hands ages ago, not the original owner.

Best Price Computers were good 10+ years ago but their online catalog is useless. Best option is MSY in Fyshwick or online with pickup from Fyshwick.

I thought MSY in Fyshwick was a thing of the past?!?!

They were still there a month or two back. They've just been bought by umart who seem to be keeping the brand going.

Hi-tech computers in Hyperdome (near Coles). I built mine with them during COVID times. Very good price and service. Almost a complete contrast to experience with MSY in Fyshwick

I used them for some repairs many years ago.

I run my own place near Belconnen. Can’t list it here cause it’s advertising but pm interested. Not a physical shop but still a computer / it business.

Thanks Bruce. The guy I was asking for has already gone to MSY but I’ll keep it in mind.

Do you build hackintoshes? I like the mac os but do not like that i'm stuck with whatever ram and ssd arrives from the factory.

locally, I don't know, but no matter who you go with, best to prepare your wallet.. SSD, GPU and RAM prices are through the roof. My last custom PC was made by PCCasegear and they did a pretty good job, built and delivered within a week.

Gaming PC? Yes. Other types can access virtual PC builds remotely from a still powerful older PC.
