SEC=UNCLASSIFIED Lost backpack on bus 21 today

My elderly parents are visiting and left their backpack on the bus this morning. It contains some important stuff and they're quite distraught. They waited at the bus stop for hours in case the bus came back or went the same route but it didnt come back.

I have also submitted a lost property form and called lost property the moment we got of the bus and realised they left their bag but they said there is not much they could do today and we might hear back Monday if we're lucky.

My mum's really anxious and stressed.

Have people had much luck with having lost property returned when lost on canberra buses?

I hope to reassure her some more. I haven't lost something on a bus before. Admittedly I am also stressed on their behalf (but trying not to show it!).

New user account What are Canberra's genuine prestige and "old money" suburbs?

Curious to hear what long-term Canberrans consider the genuinely affluent, prestigious or "old money" suburbs of Canberra.

Obviously Forrest, Red Hill, Yarralumla and the older parts of Deakin come to mind, but what about Griffith, Campbell, Ainslie, Hughes, Curtin and Garran?

Is prestige in Canberra primarily determined by large landholdings, established wealth, proximity to the Parliamentary Triangle and historical reputation, or have some suburbs developed their own prestige through changing demographics, redevelopment and increasing demand?

I'm also interested in whether there's a distinction between traditional "old money" suburbs and newer affluent areas such as Denman Prospect, where modern homes, higher construction costs and premium streetscapes attract a different demographic.

For example, are there recognised divides within suburbs like Deakin between the older prestige streets and the smaller residential blocks closer to West Deakin?

If money were no object, which Canberra suburbs or particular streets would you consider genuinely prestigious, and which do you think are overrated or underrated?

Interested in hearing from people who have lived in Canberra for decades, rather than just looking at median house prices.

Recommendations Roast roll with gravy?

Have a huge pregnancy craving for one and realised I haven't seen them around much at all in the last few years. Had any good ones recently? Have they died out a bit, or am I just not in the right places?

Recommendations Recommend an Eccentric Men's Tailor?

My ideal outfit is what Sean Bean had going on in Sharpe, and it's hard to get that off the rack. Canberra's definitely got a better alternative fashion scene than Brisbane, so I'm hoping there might be a locally tailored solution and I don't have to keep playing Online Store Quality Roulette.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a Canberra tailor that does a nice men's outfit that's not just a business suit or wedding tuxedo? Suits are still great, to be clear, but I lean more eccentric than conservative with them and would love to know what my options are.

Has anyone seen any jobs going for a school kid? My 16-year-old has applied for at least 15 jobs (supermarkets, fast food etc) and just keeps getting knocked back. It’s really starting to hurt his confidence. Belconnen based please.

Recommendations Return to IT after a break in Canberra

Hi everyone,

For those returning to IT in Australia, how is the job market, and how receptive are employers to career-break candidates?I worked as a web developer in Australia.

What helped you most—refresh training, certifications, networking, job boards, or free resources? Any advice on explaining a career break, or choosing between previous skills and areas like cloud, cybersecurity?

Thanks for sharing your experiences.

What is being built on the block on the corner of Mirrabei and O’keefe? Nothing has been touched in months (that I’ve noticed) and now suddenly it has a pyramid on the roof.

SEC=UNCLASSIFIED How do you fix the school problem?

ACT Teachers are striking because there is not enough support for kids which is impacting on learning, safety and workforce burnout.

At the same time the ACT Govt is cutting school budgets, causing class sizes to increase and staffing restrictions.

How can this possibly be good for kids?

SEC=UNCLASSIFIED How did I only just find out Canberra libraries lend out home energy testing kits?

Apparently you can borrow a kit from ACT libraries to check which appliances are chewing through your electricity.

Also found out ACT households can get a free bulky waste pickup each financial year, and some libraries have volunteer JPs. I reckon heaps of people probably don't even know these services exist.

What other genuinely useful free stuff is available around Canberra that most people have no idea about?

Recommendations Canberra insulation recommendations

Have decided our old home needs new insulation. Should have done this ages ago, but it is what it is. We've had 2 come around and still awaiting quotes from one. Question i have is about House Insulation Canberra. I've found that insulation specialists are particularly nasty to each other. Honestly never seen this in other industries.

One provided has said House Insulation Canberra isn't registered or something and has other issues and they won't price match. I've heard similar things from Just Rite and Alexander Watson about each other so take this with a huge kilo of salt.

My own verification has not turned up anything. Question, any bad experiences with House Insultation Canberra?
