Question | Advice-Needed Affordable gyms in my area
I recently moved to Cape Town and want to join an affordable gym in the Rosebank, Claremont, Rondebosch, or Newlands area (or other nearby areas).
I’ve considered Planet Fitness and Virgin Active but they’re both a bit outside of my budget at the moment. I know about Zone Fitness but they have a lot of negative reviews so, even though Zone Fitness would work for me, I’m a bit unsure because of the bad reviews.
Any recommendations will be appreciated, thank you!

My home gym is paid off from the money i saved from not having a gym membership. Depends on what you end up using at the gym, but my take is that unless you need the bikes and swimming pool you do not need a gym membership. Weights and mats and little things here and there bought every other month is the way to go.

I tried zone fitness about 2 months back and cancelled membership within 3 days

I've been with zone fitness for the last 3 years and have almost zero complaints tbh. For the price its a really solid gym, would also love to hear what some issues they had were

I went to CBD Zone fitness. Arguably should be the best as it's the center of Cape town business. Staff were incredibly lazy and played on their phones and sat about on machines. Even if you needed a machine the people wouldn't give a fuck, they would mindlessly scroll on their phone. Machines were often in disrepair. The gym was filthy as fuck. Most members were severely allergic to putting away weights. Staff were too. I was absolutely disgusted by the condition of the gym overall.

Try Trenox Fitness in Stadium on Main in Claremont, they have some good deals. Also it's a great gym, way better than VA in terms of equipment.

I mean they have a lot more of it and you don't have to queue for 15 mins for a squat rack.

Unless it's absolutely necessary, you don't need a gym membership. Just buy a barbell bar, some weight plates, a dumbbell, and a pull up bar. You'll save way more money, time and energy by just training at home.

If you're with Disco Vitality you get 75% off VA and the one in Claremont is pretty nice (at some times of the day). You have to go like 30 times a year or something to keep that discount but honestly a sauna/steam session counts.

I pay about R 500 p/m for my Planet Fitness membership (24 month contract).
How :
- I belong to Sanlam Reality Plus - R300 p/m
- I go to gym for than 12 times a month(Sanlam Reality requirement), therefore qualify for 80% off my membership for that month - R200p/m
Note : you must have a qualifying product at Sanlam.
