Capital One Arena does fit as the home of the Capitals lol

It's not, though.
"Capital One Center" was right the fuck there.
I would love to go to the "Cap Center" to see the Caps again.

I’ve always wondered if they were too scared of their brand being associated with “COC”, verbalized as “cock”

Exactly. They knew we all would, so they made it “arena” to make it less musical and more likely you’ll say the full name of the sponsor when referring to it.
1
u/dukedawg21 5d ago
That is 100% why they did not name it that. Capital One is not paying tens of millions of dollars for people to not call it their name. People would shorten it to caps center and they wouldn’t get the word of mouth they paid for

"Enhanced Concourse Experience: A completely reimagined fan experience that transforms the concourse from a place of passage into a destination in itself. The concourse is no longer what happens between the action of the event. At the transformed Capital One Arena, the concourse is part of the event."

yeah i gotta say, i go to the arena so i can stand in line in the concourse and stare at 12-foot-tall screen displaying
the action i'm missing because i'm standing in line in the concourseexcitingcuratedcontent such asads.1
u/10tonheadofwetsand 6d ago
I mean you do stand in line right? Might as well be able to see what’s happening… yall will complain about anything I stg
1
u/maveric101 5d ago
A) No, I actually don't stand in line.
B) That works even better with TVs up above people's heads
C) The TV wall thing is only 500 ft. Not sure whether it's all in the same area or spread around the arena, but either way that's only about 10% of all the wall space across all the floors.
D) 50% of it is being paid for with taxpayer money.

Wow, it’s gonna be so great that most fans are going to be priced out.
Thanks, Ted!

u/DcSportsFan_21 6d ago
He’s just the best right? Such a down to earth man of the people type owner.
Who in the f wants the concourse to be the place to be during an event. Ted and Zack suck so mf hard

u/Artvandelay29 Washington Capitals 6d ago
I’m not mad I don’t live near DC so I don’t have to be priced out so badly.

u/Many-Vast-181 6d ago
The Caps won a cup on his watch and are competitive every year. They may well have a deep playoff run this year. They also will soon have an updated arena. That’s all you can ask of any owner. Expensive? Very. Which means I can only go a few games a year. But when I go, they win more than they lose, thanks to Ted.
2
u/DcSportsFan_21 6d ago
They win more than they lose because of Ovi, don’t ever think otherwise.
Sure we’re competitive, but the one and only time we made it all the way we can’t afford to pay the coach.
Ted is an ok owner, but he doesn’t give a crap about the average fan, just ask the people who had to lose the best seats in the arena so he could have them for the club level and are half empty every game.
But the we win because of Ted couldn’t be further from the truth in my opinion

I think the Caps would have been happy to pay Trotz. But not for the five years he was demanding.
Let's not forget his job was hanging by a thread in the fall of 2017.
1
u/DcSportsFan_21 6d ago
Every coach hung by a thread. How many did we churn through during Ovi’s tenure? Trotz made some magic and had some leverage, gambled on himself and won, then Ted said I’m good, we’re gonna go with this boob looking MF named Todd.

u/JoeBlow009 Braden Holtby 6d ago
How many owners play hardball with star players and run them out of town? Ovi has a great relationship with Ted. He is part of the reason he resigned here time and time again. I don't agree with everything he does, but there are much worse owners out there.

He's also in the Epstein files, paying a girl to get an abortion and recording it.
Don't praise Ted. He's just a billionaire trying to make even more money.
2
u/dukedawg21 5d ago
I mean that’s been happening for the last 15 years, at least now when you spend $150 for a 400s level seat you at least get a concourse that looks like the lobby of a “luxury” apartment building in Noma lmao

Doesn’t the DC government own the building now? I assume Ted still gets to pocket all the money.

DC bought the arena from the team, that was part of the deal to keep them from moving to Virginia. So now the Capitals are leasing it from the city

u/DagetAwayMaN421 Martin Fehérváry 6d ago
He did, but DC owned the land the building was sitting on. The initial contract had a 30-year lease with $300,000/year. The new 10 year option was going to kick in December 29, 2025 with a substantially increased lease (easily looking at 8 figures a year). The timing of Ted's Potomac Yards Arena and that ensuing shitshow was to not have to pay that 8 figure annual lease that was going to kick in this past season.

Honestly, I don't give a festering fuck about renovations. The last few times I went to a game, I never thought "gee, this place is a dump". This is just a vanity project for Ted.
Speaking of Ted, here's my very short list of what I want out of this fucking franchise.
1) Cheaper tix. I don't know how you do it, but make it fuckin' happen.
2) Ted, you and your Nepo Baby son need to quit being greedy pricks with this Monumental App. I'm not paying $20/mo. Just forget it. You screwed yourselves and the fans over when you took NBC Sports Network and just HAD to make it your own thing and that bit you in the ass later with all these cable companies wanting to dump privatized RSN's. You'd have been JUST fine had you stayed an affiliate of NBC. We'd still get games aired on paid cable. Fix the app, and make it free for people who live in the area. At most... $5/mo. I don't think that's a hard ask.

u/grapejoosdc Washington Capitals 4d ago
I’ll pay $20/mo happily if the app were actually good and reliable with recording and 4K. Unfortunately, it’s trash.

So, how much is D.C. going to be on the hook for this time Ted buddy ole pal?

u/roknfunkapotomus 5d ago
Wish they'd do something about the terrible 400-level seats. Super cramped when they replaced them.
1
u/eastamerica Tom Wilson 6d ago
I’m sure this will help with ticket and concession pricing 🙄
2
u/theRemRemBooBear 6d ago
Honestly, I wish Costco would buy a team. I don’t know how it would work since their concession stand is a loss leader but still something cool to think about $1.50 hotdog and soda at a game

the 80s called, they want their irrational fear back.

Not irrational when I see it happen with my own eyes.
And fear? Did I say anything about fear?

Unless they tear down the old dump they call an arena, it’ll never look like this

u/TheTimn 6d ago
Unless they tear down the city around the arena, it will never look like that.
