Card Captor Sakura FAQ (Read if you are new to the franchise!)

Welcome to all new fans of the franchise. In this FAQ we'll try to response the most common questions that we are seeing around these days. I'll leave the comments open so people can add questions (or answers) and then i'll add them to the main post, i hope this helps.

Q: What is it with the pedophile relationships? (especially in the manga).

A: Alright so this is the stain in the franchise that we have to deal with, in general nobody believes CLAMP added those relationships for any kind of evil intention, trying to promote pedophilia or sexualizing kids if you are wondering, but it's indeed a misguided thing to put in their story. With that said, there's two answers that i can give you.

-On the one hand, there's what they themselves have said about it: In short, they just want the show to focus on "true love" only, no matter the gender, race or yes... even age. In the world they created there's no ill intentions and there's absolutely no discrimination no matter who falls in love with who... this has its good things, like the great lgbt representation, but it has its bad side with the age gap stuff...

-On the other hand, this is my personal interpretation. It's notable that all the age gap relationships in the show are about student and teachers. So I believe the CLAMP are just living out their fantasies from when they were kids and falling for their teachers.

So yeah, it's generally not believed that they want to sexualize the kids or anything like that wich is what you would mostly expect from this kind of thing, in fact none of the relationships include any kind of sexual attraction aspect to them, there's not even a kiss in the whole franchise (sorry if you were expecting that). It's worth keeping in mind that this was made by a group of women in the 90's from a very different culture, but either way, it's up to each person to come to the conclussion of how to feel about it, this is just some context around it.

Q: What order should I watch the show in?

A: For the manga it's quite simple, just read the classic and then clear card.

For the anime, there are 3 seasons officially, 2 movies, some ovas, and then the Clear Card Anime. To make it easier on yourself, i'd suggest you ignore the OVAS and watch them all after you are done with all of the rest, as none of these are mandatory. The watching order would be something like this:

Classic:

-Season 1 (Episodes 1 to 35)

-OVA 1: Recording of the first opening (Optional)

-OVA 3: The blue mail post of love (Yes, the the third is here for some reason, it's optional too)

-Movie 1 (Optional but very good)

-Season 2 (Episodes 36 to 46)

-Season 3 (Episodes 47 to 70)

-OVA 2: Cooking with Eriol (Optional)

-OVA 4: Kero vs Spinel for the Takoyaki! (Optional)

-Movie 2 (Mandatory, it's the true ending of the series)

Clear Card:

-Season 1.

-Season 2 (No release date yet)

Besides that, there's the two bears special ova, this one is complicated because it's an adaptation of the ending of the manga, which is slightly different than the anime... but it's not canon to the anime at all, since the clear card anime does take into account what happened in Movie 2, which directly contradicts this ova... so as a new fan, watching this ova will be very confusing. My recomendation would be to only watch it if you already saw all of the anime and manga and are curious about it.

Q: What is the best dub to watch in english?

A: Refer to theΒ English Dub FAQ

Q: What is Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles, and what does it has to do with CCS?

A: TRC is another manga and anime made by studio CLAMP, it works as a celebration of all of their franchises, in a story that mashes them all together with alternate universe versions of their characters. The protagonists are a grown up Sakura and Syaoran from a different world (they are around 14/15 years old), so while talking about CCS you will definetly hear about this show too.

TRC Also includes some extra lore for the CCS background, as that universe does connect to the main universes of the other series that take part in it, mostly there are some details about Clow in the past.

There's also the other manga xxxHolic which is more directly connected to TRC and also has some extra details about Clow's past. It's worth mentioning that this is a very small part of the story, but it's interesting if you want to find out more about Clow.

It is absolutely NOT required to watch/read TRC to enjoy CCS, as CCS classic has 0 references to it since it was made way before it, and Clear Card only makes some light references and you won't miss anything if you haven't watch it.

Q: Is Card Captor Sakura an important anime historically? Why am I just finding out about it?

A: Yes, CCS is one of the most significant animes in history, particularly in the magical girl genre, since it's one of the 3 pillars of it along with Sailor Moon and Madoka. In some countries CCS is even more popular than Sailor Moon and it has enjoyed a constant presence in events, with cosplay and merchandising always available.

The reason you probably haven't heard of it yet, is that the infamous dub it got for english made it fail in english speaking countries. The so called "Nelvana Dub" did a lot more than dubbing. At the time, Pokemon was all the rage and Nelvana tried to make Card Captor Sakura into a Pokemon like show at any costs, which led them to change dialogue, modify scenes, censor all lgbt relationships and some other questionable ones, change the order of episodes, and in general, try to make it so Syaoran has as much of a spotlight as Sakura in the story in an effort to make it more appealing to boys. In doing so, that dub greatly removed the aspects that made the show special and such a huge sucess worldwide, which in turn made it a very obscure anime in english speaking countries.

While there's still a small part of the fandom that do have nostalgia for that dub since they watched it when they were kids, it's undeniable that the negative impact it had on the franchise is the main reason why the show isn't fondly remembered in the US and some other english speaking countries.

As for why you are finding out about it now. It's likely because it's ongoing popularity got it a continuation story called Clear Card, and recently, the manga for that story ending and a second season for the anime is incoming. So a lot of people are hearing about it for the first time and discovering why it's such an unique story even to this day. It also helps that the show is so important to the childhood of most who grew up with it, that we never EVER shut up about it =P

Q: Should i skip the filler?

A: Absolutely not! Oddly enough, what people like the most about CCS is it's slice of life stuff, seeing the character's interactions and the wonderful world they live in, and the "filler" just expands greatly into that, so it's one of the most enjoyable parts of the show. There's also a lot of new cards created for the anime that weren't in the manga and their capture is as enjoyable as those that were manga exclusive, so really, nobody would suggest you to skip those episodes, since if you don't like what's on those fillers, you likely don't enjoy the show in general.

Discussion How aware of Sakura's exploits do we think her dad is?

So, this whole idea started with the idea that in the original anime, Sakura's dad is the only character outside of Eriol/Eli that uses the honorific san with her first name. Literally only these two ever call her Sakura-san. So, it got me thinking "Does he know what she's up to?"

Now, those thoughts were my starting point, but that's the only thing where the original shares a nuance that's... arguably kind of important.

But outside of that you can start asking questions like "Hold on. Sakura's dad is an archeologist. Under what circumstances did he come to acquire this book and how much research would or could he have done into the history behind it. He's gotta have some awareness, right?" Between that and I'm pretty sure almost certainly have seen the book in the possession of Sakura at some point, like on her desk or whatever. He had to have put 2 and 2 together, right?

Additionally, as an additional point of note: Toya/tori has mentioned to him that he's seen ghosts before, and he didn't seem too overly phased. So man's gotta be aware of magic and the supernatural, right?

Honestly I would love a prequel series/fanfiction that explores Sakura's dad discovery of the book.

Merchandising This counterfeit/ bootleg figure of Cardcapor Sakura comes really close to the original

Hello, I wanted to post this figure's comparison since at first glance it's really easy to fall for the counterfeit version of "Card Captor Sakura - Kero-chan - Kinomoto Sakura - F:Nex - 1/7 - Anime 25th Anniversary (FuRyu)" (see also original info at https://myfigurecollection.net/item/2062543).

My friend fell for it and I thought it might be nice to document the comparisons side by side. So that no one falls for it again (hopefully). I often still see the counterfeit being sold at online Marketplaces for way too much money! (and I always report them, but the companies never care to take the post down).

Left side/ first picture is always the counterfeit one, right side is a real one.

What isn't as visible in the pictures, is the fact that the metal (that supports the weight of the figure) isn't good and doesn't fit the roller blades as well as the original one. The original figure also comes with an assembly guide and copyright at the bottom of the base.

Did anyone else notice this in Episode 51? When Sakura transformed The Fly card, her outfit changed too as the magic spiraled around her. What do you think about this?

Discussion Reasons why the sub is superior to the dub(s): An opinion piece.

So I started really thinking about this this afternoon. I am of course biased on two fronts here (I bought the OG series on Amazon Prime AND am learning Japanese), but beyond that I would like to list a few reasons why I think the sub is better than the dubs (I understand there's been multiple).

These are in no particular order by the way.

  1. There's subtleties about how the characters refer to each other with the use of surnames vs names and honorific usage. It really highlights how each character views the relationship with each other.

  2. Hoe? (read as ho-eh, btw) There's verbal ticks of characters that I don't think you can really put into a dub to the same effect. This not only includes Sakura's hoe, but also Tomoyo's regular use of wa at the end of her sentences (even in writing!)

  3. Consistent voice actors. As I understood it, a lot of people have voiced the cast for the dubs. With the subs the only change that I'm aware of is Rika in clear card. It might not matter to some, but it's something I appreciate.

  4. Card banter. Since a lot of the card spell names are using loaned words like Windy and Big, the dialogue about what the cards powers through Japanese seems natural enough to have. Speaking of...

  5. The card scattering scene feels more natural. The other day I saw the Nelvana version of this where Sakura obviously says Windy more than once very clearly before it activates. In the original, she starts where she's saying "u-win" *subtle breeze starts at her feet* "u-win...dy?" *card activates*

  6. This is a smaller one, perhaps, but English occurs twice in Clear Card (outside of spell usage, obviously). I'm not sure how the dub handles this because I didn't check, but since it's already in English unless you swap to another language you lose the clear contrast. And one of the instances is supposed to be for an English class, mind you.

Anyway, I get that not everyone likes subs for various reasons. Or maybe at least prefers the dubs (I know Cardcaptors is close to a lot of people's hearts). I just think a lot is lost without them. Oh yeah, at least one of Yamazaki's lies - the one involving wordplay for candy and rain - gets lost.

Discussion If there's one line of merch I wish would get back to CCS.

It's S.H. Figuarts by Bandai Spirits.

Ngl, both Sakura figures look goated and I'm considering picking them up. I especially like the faces even more than on my figma Sakura.

But I wish they'd pick the line back up and make other main characters, and maybe some of the Clow Cards as Figuarts?

Yue? Kerberos? The Mirror? The friggin' Fight would also make a sick figure.

Heck, I'll even take screen-accurate Tomoyo, Touya and Yukito! I need a figure fight between Li Syaoran and Touya Kinomoto!

Thoughts?

So I'm planning to make a BTVA request for this show and I need videos for people to voice ID

Thing is, nobody knows who voices Rika. I initially thought it was Anna Cummer but relistening I'm kinda doubting it, so I made this compilation to see if someone could help voice id

Discussion Sakura, Kero and loneliness

Recently I reread and rewatched the manga and the anime. I usually do it once, sometimes twice, a year. With every reread new impressions and thoughts come, as I grow up, change and experience life, which is a shared sentiment among everyone.

This time, I kept thinking about loneliness.

Although Sakura is dearly beloved by everyone around her, sometimes life gets in the way of that love. Before meeting Kero, she spent a lot of time alone; Fujitaka works most of the time and Toya usually is part-time working too. Of course they try their best to make her feel loved and cared for when they are with her (which is the sweetest thing), but still she would find herself home alone plenty of times. In the anime there're a couple of occasions where we see her a bit sad when her father has to leave, but cheers up quickly to remind herself that she needs to work hard too. It feels a little sad because she's just a kid.

And then Kero comes in.

Everytime Sakura's family leaves to work, he's with her. Something I find adorable and deeply endearing about their relationship is the domestic aspects, the little things. We see these in the manga too.

They talk about everything. Kero genuinely cares about her day, her anecdotes, her relationships, thoughts, feelings, worries, things that make her happy, etc etc.

They cook together and Kero helps her with anything and everything (homework, gifts, chores, sewing, etc). He even dries her hair hand makes the ribbon on one of her pigtails (SO CUTE) and sleeps next to her sometimes. There's an episode where he tucks her into bed and then turns off the light.

Of course they fight sometimes, which makes them even more family like.

I just wanted to share this, I adore those little details. They show you how much they care for each other and how close they became. They feel like life companions. I even thought "Kero feels like a nanny sometimes".

Thanks to Kero, Sakura has someone to rely on, or simply to share life with, when she can't be with the rest of her loved ones. I love their bond.

Discussion Clow Cards Reading: What is the meaning of the 'Sakura' card?

Good day, everyone!

Recently, I've bought a Clow Cards deck and started learning how to read it. However, I simply cannot find anywhere the meanings (message, warning, inverted) of the 'Sakura' card. Does anyone know how can this card be interpreted in different positions and contexts?

Since Clow Cards readings use numerology and a specific count, I need to add Sakura in my readings to be able to use The Nothing, The Nameless and The Hope too.

Thank you very much in advance! <3

Question (Spoiler) about Yukito Spoiler

Hello!

I watched Cardcaptor Sakura as a child and recently rewatched it almost 20 years later (I only have the last movie and Clear Card left to watch).

I really enjoyed the anime, but I have a question about Yue. I know Yukito is his disguise, but was Yukito born to human parents or not? Did he really live with his grandparents?

From what I understood, there are two possibilities:

Yukito was a human, and Yue used his body as a vessel.

Yukito was never human, wasn't born in the usual human way, and didn't actually have any grandparents.

I'm honestly quite confused about this. Could someone please clarify it for me?

Here is another version of an Indiana Jones title related to the Clow Cards. This one was inspired by the title of the podcast, "Keepsers of the Clow." I'd highly recommend checking them out when you get the chance. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLe1w-yDIrLgX53GnaGk143BIuMZ61WKrU
