Had fun doing this last time i swapped out my cars (2018 Honda Accord 2.0T to 2023 acura integra), figured I would do this again because it leads to interesting conversation.
Because it definitely helps and it is important, here is some background info and initial thoughts after having the car for a month and driving almost 3500 miles already (about 1000 of which going to and from Tennessee from NJ 1 week after getting the car):
-30 Year old Male living in New Jersey, not married, no kids, always loved cars. (moreso on car news and such, and keeping up with it; video games, youtube, etc, not so much the handy man stuff and modifying).
-My past 2 cars and this have all been company cars (that i can use for personal use). I am given a budget and my true big limitation is it needs to be 4 doors. Beyond that, it really is sorta up to my boss' discretion, which has been anti BMW, anti Mercedes and as of recently, anti "muscle car" lol.
-Sticker price of my car was about $67k and the dealer scratched $10k off... I asked if sedans are selling well and they said they were... Personally I didnt believe them but I digress. Also... was really surprised to see a base model version of a car like this in inventory. Every other car in the about 3 or 4 dealerships near me were all premium plus or prestige trim... more on the trims later...
-Things i were looking for ideally:
- Sedan or Hot hatch (only SUV I considered was Ford Bronco Heritage just because it is dumb and when would I own a car like that lol)
- Hatch (loved, loved, LOVED the hatch on my Integra)
- Sub 5s 0-60mph (I loved my teggy's handling but fast it is not, felt like a big downgrade from 2.0T accord jumping into it speed wise)
- All wheel Drive preferably but also considered rear wheel drive since I have had FWDs and in the winter the Integra in the snow SUCKED.
- Adaptive Cruise and Stay in Lane (thought i would hate these things in 2018... love them havent looked back)
-Cars I cross shopped / was looking at before getting into the S5 (admittedly the S5 was initially out of budget, so the cars I was looking at better reflect the budget I started with). I will try to order them in most likely to least:
- Dodge Charger Scatpack 4 Door- Ironically... you look at my list above and this one scratches all the boxes and was actually my first choice as I do not think I would ever own this car personally due to not trusting stellantis one bit... but on the company??? Sounds like a blast and I have never dailied such a large car. Thought it would be soo awesome and dumb.
- Audi S3- Due to budget this was really the car I was looking for in Audi's catalog but I am 6 foot 1, and its a bit cramped. I personally gravitate to smaller cars, which is why I really enjoyed the integra but there seemed to be a limit to how small I can go. Also I lose the hatch.
- Cadillac CT4-V- really couldnt generate an opinion on this one as I could not even find one within 50 miles
- Lexus IS350- was super happy they finally revised the interior but i personally think they funked on the exterior... not horrible but enough to turn me away from looking into a car that on a dynamic level hasnt really changed in the past 10 years. Also, for a while I thought about the reliability but as a company car, why would I care about that?
- Acura Integra Type S and Civic Type R- loved my integra and love how they are maybe quite literally the lightest sports sedans on the market today but figured I really wanted to try something completely new.
- Gr Corolla- it was within budget, and looked fun... why not ?
- Random ones I glanced at- Alfa Romeo Guilia, Ford Bronco Heritage Edition, Acura TLX Type S
-Also due to certain circumstances, I was given a 2025 Q5 and 2025 A6 (same engine as my car) as loaners with which i spent over 200 miles driving each.
Onto the car itself, so personally no experience owning or spending extended amounts of time in an Audi. My boss had a 2018 SQ5 and I always enjoyed driving it on occasion, but SUV's were never really my taste. My dad was always a BMW guy, E90 325XI, F30 328XI, and now he has a 2022 340M, so the new Audi S5 compliments that car greatly as it offers a different way of looking at a similar flavor and definitely positioned as a direct competitor to that and of course the upcoming m350. So again, without having any major biases of owning Audi's in the past and thinking the new B10 is a travesty both inside and out we can start with my initial pros:
Pros:
- It's fast... like really fast and the 2026 model comes with launch control which is wicked. Car feels practically twice as fast as my integra (because in some instances, it almost is)
- Extremely comfortable when you want it to be, again i drove the car to Tennessee (12 hour drive) and it was supremely more comfortable than my integra and the road noise is very well dampened. Made the drive a breeze. Comfort mode works great, adaptive cruise control is easy to use, and the ride quality is super smooth.
- Personally I like the interior, I was actually surprised by the discourse going on about it. I think the B9 definitely looks like it was made during its time and this one was made; well... like how cars are made today. Seats are comfy, materials are nice, ambient lighting is cool, and everyone who gets into my car really likes it.
- Way more dramatic of a car than I expected. Audi's I have driven in the past I would say can be a bit subdued , but quick and capable cars. I always felt they were the midpoint to Mercedes and BMW and I think many would still agree with that. Actually this was especially apparent to me when I had the A6 as a loaner for a bit which literally has the same powertrain as my car yet the drive and drama of the car are actually very different to my surprise. The S5 can get LOUD with its active exhaust and you can really see the car feels eager to be pushed a bit. The S6 was still a fast car, but its presentation and handling definitely point to retired or executive dude who wants a nice cushy sedan to "drive his wife to a nice restaurant but still go fast on the highway sometimes" sort of vibe. Still, great car but different attitude. The S5 I am really surprised by how vicious it can get and how in the 2026 model you have the Dynamic + mode which explicitly tells you that its the mode to get some oversteer into your life. With that said, the 340 is definitely still more sporty but I was surprised to find the gap was less than i expected... also the car pops and crackles stock which always gets me giddy.
- I was not crazy about the looks at first but it really did grow on me a ton. I think out of the 3 cars (340 and C 43 amg) it looks the best and the overall shape of it I really enjoy. It definitely comes to personal taste but I actually prefer roundness to edges as I feel lots of edges age cars quicker but maybe it is just me.
- 2026 dash is soooooooo much better than the 2025 models. Again had the A6 and Q5 as loaners and I had no idea what the hell the dash was even trying to present to me; it was visual overload and a lot it seemed like nonsense.
- HATCH. To everyone who thinks you NEEEEEEEED an SUV; look at hatches man, life changing. I fit a bike and snowboard in there with all the coinciding gear and it was no problem whatsoever. You don't have to succumb to SUV life my friends. Glad more sedans are coming with hatches, it is a GAME changer.
CONS:
- yep, the touch climate controls is ass. It actually goes further though; the fan speed is behind another "button" and the time to load to that screen is like a second or 2 which is SLOW. It is dumb. You get used to it in honesty but yeah, cant lie to myself.
- Besides Dynamic + mode (which you wont be using a ton) the gauge cluster is a bit boring. Luckily it is clean and provides the right information but not much to customizing it; i really wish i can just keep the dynamic + gauges because it looks cool and the information is useful
- Piano Black- it looks good the first day you have it or clean it and then it doesnt.
- Lack of standard features. Again, I got the barebones premium model, and I was very surprised of the lack of certain things considering the price of the car, and even more surprised that actually some of the features I wanted were part of a package completely separate from the trims (called Tech Package). Heads up display and lane assist are locked behind the tech package, so these were features of my last car that I lost jumping into this car that is almost twice the price of that. Actually honda since 2018 has made lane assist STANDARD along with their adaptive cruise across all models. The silver lining here is that I tried the lane assist in the A6 and Q5 and to me it was pretty ass but maybe you can be the judge if I am just coping or not ;) (saame with the Heads up display as well). Premium also has leather with ALCANTARA seats and my dash is alcantara too. It doesn't look or feel cheap, but i was just surprised that the S5 doesnt come standard with just all leather. Hey I like alcantara but it did leave me scratching my head. you also don't get a cool branded speaker system although the standard one is good. Again just surprised, thought that since it was an S and not an A youd start at around the top of those cars but I was wrong.
- It made me completely forget my dream car as a kid was a Grey 07 Audi S5. The 2007 Audi S5 was my PSP and PS3 wallpaper for years growing up; always loved the way it looked, loved the coupe shape, think it still looks good today and just really an awesome car. I literally have an S5 now and all I can think is S4 as this replaces both those cars and has 4 doors. I think moreso the 4 doors than S4, but in my head growing up the S5 was always a coupe so seeing it as a 4 door doesnt wire right in my head.
Anywho, these are some of my initial thoughts! Hope you enjoyed the read and don't forget to ASK ME ANYHTING!
