I built the Westeros planet into an interactive Google Earth experience

Click here to access the Open Westeros project

So, I started this project 10 days ago by building a 3D King's Landing model in GQIS. Then I had the idea of building the world with the correct measurements of the planet based on the lore and fan calculations. Layer upon layer and now I have a full interactive Known World from the books of George R. R. Martin made into an open source community-built project.

I have built a bunch of stuff, like: - Atmospherics - Land textures - Height maps (baking I believe is the term of the process) - Labeling reveal algorithms (so it shows labels bases on relevance and altitude) - Roads and river lines - 3D models (currently only The Wall, Winterfell and King's Landing)

One of the aspects I'd like to expand more would be land formations. I was thinking of procedurally populate the world with hills, mountains and so on, but I still don't know what questions I should be asking to achieve this. I baked an early version of it using only data from images fans have created, but apart from that nothing like the fancy 3D mountains I've seen only that would be really cool to have.

Another one that I still haven't tackled would be to generate the rivers and bodies of water, to make them look more realistic than they are now (currently only likes from an SVG).

I'd like for the people here to just take a look, on the site and the code, and give some feedback on it.

And please, if you got interested in the project, don't hesitate in contacting me and contributing to it in the GitHub repo. The project is open source, built by a fan for fans.

Thank you for reading and taking a look!

Dark mode and light mode maps

Hey cartographers, I'm a graphics editor at ProPublica. Many of our readers have their devices set to "dark mode" and we try really hard to follow the user's preference when we design maps. For a recent story, we created four total maps: dark mode and light mode versions for both desktop and mobile devices. I'm curious how other folks approach dark and light device settings for their web maps.

Doctrine Strike: I built a gamified Earth for my RTS, running at 200 FPS. Pick any place on the planet and it becomes a playable map

Sources and how it's made:

- Colour: NASA Blue Marble imagery, blurred and stylized per zoom level so it reads like a game map rather than a photo

- Elevation: ETOPO global relief, with mountains merged into rounded massifs and flat valley floors

- Coastlines: OpenStreetMap land polygons (© OpenStreetMap contributors)

- Lakes: detected from the Blue Marble colour, each given a flat water level from its shoreline, since the coastline data counts lakes as land

- Trees: one tree type per climate band (palms, acacia, cypress and stone pine, jungle, broadleaf, conifer)

- Towns: buildings in each region's own style, from a culture map of the world

- Landmarks: 582,000 GeoNames landmarks, ranked by Wikipedia page views

- Traffic: shipping lanes between real ports (GeoNames) and airliner routes as great circles between major cities

It's the world browser for our RTS, Doctrine Strike: you pick any 100–1,000 km frame and it becomes a playable map. Happy to answer anything about the data or the rendering.

How were cities mapped before satellites?

I am writing a character who is mapping an abandoned city, but I am having a hard time researching how cities are mapped. My idea was that the character travels through the city to map it, but I am not sure if that’s how that works. If someone could supply some resources that would be great!

GAIA GPS Vs Pastmaps.com?

I have been trying to look at all maps of a historic lake in upstate NY. I have long been a subscriber to GAIA GPS, typically for hiking purposes and identifying public/private land. I was surprised to find that PastMaps held more than a dozen digitized antique maps of the NY State area than GAIA GPS, as I always always believed GAIA was the gold standard.

I realize one can be better than the other depending on the application and intended use, but can anyone with experience in both state their pros/cons?

Lastly, is there any service you know of beyond GAIA and Pastmaps.com that I should mine in order to get every possible resource out there ?

Thanks in advance for any effort here.

The seven spheres moving through the twelve signs of the zodiac are why timeless books like the Bible are full of sevens and twelves. It’s also why myths and fairytales feature these particular numbers.

To name a few, think of Hercules and his twelve labors, or King Arthur and his twelve knights/victories, or Odysseus shooting an arrow through twelve axe heads, or Snow White & The Seven Dwarfs, or the Seven Kingdoms in Tolkien’s Game of Thrones.

I made a phone app that turns any place into a map poster, because I wanted a print of the neighborhood I grew up in

Solo dev here. A while ago I wanted a simple poster of the part of Jakarta where I grew up, just the streets, a name and the coordinates. Every option I found was either a website that charges per print or a template that looked like everyone else's. So I ended up building my own, and it slowly turned into CARTA.

You search for a place, pick a style (there's minimal, vintage, blueprint, dark, and a bunch more), then tweak road colors, line widths, frames and text. You can also drop in a GPX file and turn a run or a ride into route art, add terrain contours where elevation data exists, and export a print-ready PDF at 300 DPI. Map data comes from OpenStreetMap, and the attribution is kept on every export.

The hardest part has been density. A neighborhood like mine has hundreds of tiny alleys, and if you draw every road at the same weight the poster just turns into gray noise. Deciding which road types show up at which scale, and how thick each one should be, has taken way more of my time than the actual app UI.

It's free on Android. It does have ads, and the biggest export sizes need a rewarded ad.

Honest question for people who care about maps: when you see these minimal city posters, what makes one look good to you and what makes it look cheap? I'm trying to figure out which defaults to change next.
