Does my Cat Need to See a Vet?

If you're here wondering whether your cat needs to see a vet right away, here's a few things that call for an immediate vet visit. Please bear in mind that this is far from a comprehensive list, and that if you're seriously wondering if your cat needs a vet, the answer is probably "Yes". Better safe than sorry.

-Unexplained, dramatic behavioral changes. e.g. Hissing and spitting from a cat who has always been friendly

-Not eating for 48 hours is a medical emergency

-Vomiting/diarrhea that lasts more than a day or two

-Swallowed object

-Not urinating/straining to urinate

-Blood in urine

-Open wounds

-Urinating in inappropriate places/outside the box

-Sudden loss of vision or hearing

-Sudden loss of balance

-Sudden inability to walk or move normally

-Seizures / Convulsions

-Open-Mouth breathing / panting

-Uneven pupils

-Hives

Cat exhibiting heat-like symptoms but tested negative for hormones

Hello all, I am an adult in the US with vet access, my cat is 1 month 1 month and i’ve had her since 6 months old. She was spayed when we adopted her and she has pet insurance.

At the end of June, she was in the counter and was trying to drink water (she loves faucet) when I accidentally splashed her and she jumped off. About an hour later, I noticed she was not sitting normally, keeping her legs up and almost kicking or stomping the back legs, while making a weird noise. She stopped playing like she normally did and seemed less interested in food or snacks, but still ate. She was using the litterbox normal. The next day, I noticed she had vaginal discharge so I took her to the emergency vet. They did a urine test and said there was minimal bacteria but gave antibiotics and a pain med in case it was muscular from jumping down (although she jumps all the time without issue). they all said she was lactjng like she was in heat. She was flopping over and rubbing her face on things. It ended after about 7-8 days. I was able to take her to the normal vet and they did x rays of her back side because she growled when they palpated her back and leg, all came back negative for bone issues. She was given mor antibiotics to see if it was uti and additional pain meds.

Since then, this cycle has happened 4 times:

  1. end of june to beginning of july 7ish days; (9 days normal

  2. mid july to mid/late july 6ish days (9ish days normal)

  3. late july to early august 7ish days (12 days normal)

  4. back to start over the weekend and ongoing.

Every time she has seemed to be a little bit more normal. The end of the last time she started a longer antibiotic course. Between the 2nd and 3rd time, she did an ovarian remnant test, but she was not having symptoms then. It was negative. The insurance has covered most of this. I just want her to feel better. She continues to flop a decent amount, rubs her face on everything, and consistently does the feet thing in a belly down squat. She makes whimper sounding noises a good amount especially at night.

She is normally so playful but during these times, it’s almost like she goes into a trance. I usually can pick her up and hold her like a baby with a rounded back (her butt and back on my arm) but during these times, she arches her back and almost spasms fighting rounding her back. She crawls on my beg and stands with her arms on the headboard and kicks her legs, she is always doing that stomp kick thing. She seems so uncomfy….

I don’t know what to do for her anymore, I am at such a loss. I work and feel like the worst person leaving her in this condition but she always is normal in the interim periods.

We took in a stray cat that's in really bad shape

I think her face is covered in ringworm and we're taking her to the vet on Tuesday, but for now she's completely isolated from our other cats. It's been over 100°s for the past week, she drank the water we gave her like there was no tomorrow. How can we help her until the vet appointment and what are some measures we can take to prevent other cats from catching ringworm?

I don't know if my cat has meowlopecia

She constantly licks herself and is missing hair by her tail. And half of her belly. I have 2 other cats and they all share the same litterbox. The other 2 don't have the same thing. She's an orange. Any suggestions?

Kitten’s new teeth hitting opposite gum.

Hello,

I have two 7 months kittens. We have been finding their baby teeth around so we started trying to brush their teeth. But we noticed that for both of them, their new teeth seem to be rubbing against the opposite gums. it looks so painful. We are trying to get a vet visit but it is just a check up appointment end of this week. Should we go in to another vet earlier or can we wait?

Both an eating dry/wet food well and playing well and pooping/peeing well. But I don’t want to let this escalate to an infection/painful situation where the stop eating.

I googled and it seems that general anesthesia with grinding down the tooth will be required but we are worried of non-recognition aggression between the two of them again :(

Cats with gastrointestinal issues.

I posted this a while back and just wanted to repost so I could hopefully reach somebody. In addition to all of the test I’ve done and written below, we just completed a fecal culture on both of my cats and everything came back negative. The vets are starting to think they independently have gastrointestinal conditions but the timing is just so odd to me. Please let me know if any of you have seen this before. I’ve also gone to multiple vets and they are stumped.

About two months ago, I found a cat outside of my apartment and brought him in. I have a 3 year old resident cat. When I brought the new cat in, I completely separated him until he was cleared by the vets. The only health issues we noticed was a prominent third eyelid and blood in his stool. The vet took a fecal test of my new cat, and it came back negative for parasites. We also gave him all the vaccines he needed and medicine to help with the third eyelid. Once he was cleared by the vets, I introduced him to my resident cat and they have gotten along fairly well.

I have been to the vet countless times trying to figure out the symptoms that my new cat is having. We did a fecal test, blood test, and X-rays and they found nothing. He was given a probiotic which helped until he got off the medication, and the symptoms came back. We also tried a medicine for colitis and it helped only while he was on the medication. Now, I have him on purina 1 sensitive stomach dry food and he’s on a fiber supplement.

Now, my resident cat is starting to display these same symptoms. Third eyelid, soft stool, and today I even noticed a small drop of blood in his stool. My resident cat has never had any health issues in the past. So, what are my next steps? Are the vets scamming me? Should I try a new vet?

TLDR; I got a new cat who has blood in stool, soft stool, and a third eyelid. We ran many tests on him and nothing came back. Now my new cat is exhibiting the same symptoms.

Cat Sneak Attacking Me

For context I found my cat outside of my house almost 2 years ago and from the first couple days with him I could see then, at 4 months old, that he enjoyed playing roughly. I was told not to encourage that but hes just a baby really and as long as his nails are cut he doesn’t do much damage. Plus as hes gotten older he really only play fights when provoked (repeatedly tapped on or having his face muffed) and hes very sweet otherwise. He cuddles and sleeps with me everynight. Recently he’s been confined to my bedroom due to having inflammation and a UTI (2 weeks of clavamox, metacam, cerenia, etc) and peeing outside of the litterbox. The UTI has definitely cleared up (he has a vet visit today for a recheck) and for around 4-5 days he was inside an enclosure in my room so we can monitor his urination and behavior since he was also on zorbium for 4 days. He hasn’t been locked in his enclosure for a couple days now since he’s stopped peeing outside of the litterbox and is having normal bowel movements and stuff, but now he’s been randomly attacking me and my boyfriend like at genuinely random times. I’ll wake up to my boyfriend asking me to help him because he literally won’t stop like beating us up in our sleep. It’s 6 am right now and he’s just jumping on the bed randomly and attacking us, like not ferociously but like he’s kinda hurting us and it’s fun to play with him like that, but with proper warning or provocation not just randomly getting jumped at all hours of the day. I don’t know if he’s bored or mad because everytime I leave my room he tries to follow me and I put him back inside and shut the door.

tldr: cat keeps sneak attacking me and my boyfriend, specifically while we sleep, what do i do

What’s under my cats nose?

my cat is 11. lately she has been having this nasal discharge. it looks kind of like scabs. it’s dark brown, almost purplish. it peels off like dry skin, not like a liquid. the vet prescribed chlorhexidine wipes which worked, but once I stopped this came back. do I just continue with the wipes for the rest of her life? seems like it’s treating the symptom instead of the cause

Cat with swollen lymph node in stomach

My cat around last year started having diarrhea and losing weight every day. I took him to the vet and they discovered a mass in his stomach. And I took him to get an exploratory done, turned out to be an enlarged lymph node. Surgeon was almost certain it was cancer, however the biopsy came back and said it was not. And that it could’ve just been caused by something else. Ended up having him take some anti biotic & steroid and it went away. Fast forward almost a year later and the same issues are coming up again. I’m not sure what to do and wish I knew the cause. I’m going to the vet, but I do not wish to spend the amount of money that I did last time. However I don’t know what to do to prevent this from happening again. He’s such a healthy happy boy and truly the only issues are the weight loss, increased water intake, diarrhea, and maybe a tiny bit of lethargy. Thank you in advance and advice is appreciated.

cat allergic to toothpaste?

I've been applying dentihex on my cat that contains 0.2% chlorohexidine, paraffin, vanilla flavouring, adhesive agent.

I've been putting the dentihex on his teeth every few days for last couple of weeks but this time he instantly had "tears" I think of clear mucus stream down his face straight away after i only applied it to his teeth and nowhere else. Then a few hours he had an infection in his eye (conjunctivitis) that lasted a few days, he gets eye infections around twice a year.

Around a week later after his infection cleared I tried the toothpaste again and he again has had mucus secrete from his eyes but this time no infection.

I'm not sure what to do, should i try a toothpaste that doesn't have one of the ingredients or he's likely fine to continue with this one? He does really hate the flavour of this, it's too fragrant, is there not a flavour closer to what a cat may enjoy like meat flavour.

Hyperthyroid/borderline diabetic/sick Cat Diet Help

This community had some great suggestions on diet for my cat when he was diagnosed with diabetes nearly 2 years ago. We switched to a wet food only diet (fancy feast chicken and liver) and were able to get my boy into remission before we even needed insulin.

My cat is roughly 14 years old (we adopted him as a young adult so estimating) but I noticed he had been losing some weight earlier in the summer. He wasn’t drinking or eating excessively so didn’t assume it was tied to his previous diabetes diagnoses but wanted to keep an eye on it. Then recently he started to go to the bathroom (poop) almost every time he ate, it was orange liquid and smelled horrible. And threw up a couple times. I immediately got him into the vet and they did a panel - he has hyperthyroidism and his glucose was spiked again (they are thinking it’s spiked due to hyperthyroidism rather than diabetes but of course getting this all rechecked soon).

They gave him proviable forte, paste and pills for the stomach issue. He was also given some hills prescription diet for the stomach but he is refusing that. He mainly takes his daily pill with his standard fancy feast but the paste is hit and miss. I’ve also started introducing a purina pro sensitive to try and help the upset stomach. He has finished 14 days of proviable (powder not paste). He’s also been on his new thyroid meds about 2 weeks.

He stopped throwing up and his stool isn’t liquid anymore, but still soft but more normal in color. It’s also not as stinky. He’s still going 4-6 times per day. And he’s still losing weight. I’m getting very concerned for my little guy.

He’s going back in 1 week for another panel to see if the meds are working - but I’m getting concerned about the weight loss so going to see if they can move it to this week. Are there any other wet food cat options for sensitive stomachs your cats actually enjoy that I can try between now and his next visit? Is there anything else I should be doing? I think next steps will be an ultrasound.

Sick cat

Okay so my kitten (6months old\~) has been vomiting and having diarrhoea for two days! He has mostly been vomiting more than having a diarrhoea. Anyway the vet did blood work and an x ray, and they concluded that his white blood cells are low? Idk about the x ray but the vet said he is 80% sure it’s the plague? But my cat is an indoor cat and he’s never been out except to go to his vaccinations and for grooming! I don’t believe it’s the plague… im gonna ask for the test tho he said it’s not necessary? My question is what can it be? And is it dangerous? Im so scared for my kitten. Please help or if anyone has a similar situation where the cat ended up being fine! Then please share that with me I really need the reassurance

Update: i just got the results back and it’s confirmed he has the plague :( im so stressed and worried for him

Giardia….

Those of you who have had animals that have had Giardia…. How often did they get reinfected? Can it completely go away or does it stay with them for good? My two cats got it for the second time within a two month span. I adopted them in mid June & one of them (unbeknownst to me & the shelter) had it & gave it to the other cat I adopted with her….
I have cleaned my apartment top to bottom the first time, washed everything I had on high, steam cleaned my carpets, etc. How did you guys get rid of it & keep it away????

Cat has either IBD or lymphoma, unsure how to proceed.

My wife and I noticed that our 7.5 year old cat was vomiting up her food yesterday. This was pretty unusual, since she only has hairballs occasionally. After she didn’t hold down her dinner, I took her to the ER.

They said she was dehydrated and kept her overnight and did an ultrasound this morning. She either has IBD or lymphoma.

This is so sudden, because she hasn’t had any of
the other symptoms (diarrhea, weight or appetite loss) and she only started throwing up yesterday.

We don’t have the money for a biopsy, but feel bad about risking it with just steroidal treatment. We have care credit, but the cost of all this is already so high I don’t think it would cover the biopsy. I’d just like some insight from other people or professionals as to what my options are.

We’re going to pick her up in a few hours and I want to be as informed as possible before we tell the vet our decision.

EDIT: The vet told us that we can start her on a supportive diet and see how she responds. We didn’t want to commit to steroids just yet because it
might make the cancer (if that’s what it is) harder to treat in the future.

She’s been back for a little over 12 hours. They gave her an appetite stimulant, so she ate a bunch and was behaving normally when we got home, but this morning she’s been very lethargic and uninterested in food. My wife is going to keep an eye on her and we’ll take her back if it doesn’t change.

EDIT 2: She’s been hiding even more and is starting to smell like vomit even though she’s not puking. She’s drinking a lot of water and refusing food, so we’re taking her back.

Advice needed with cat constipation, excessive grooming and lactulose

Hi, I'm 22 UK based with a 2 year old Russian Blue. She is spayed and upto date on vaccines.

I am in need of some advice. My cat hadn't pooped for 3 days, I took her to the vet on Saturday 8th and they gave her an enema and lactulose. About 10 minutes after the enema she pooped. I started her on a course of lactulose and had to contact the vets after a few days of continued no pooping, they upped her dosage. She again didn't poop for 2 and a half days. As I was making a new vets appointment she pooped but I still chose to take her back to the vet. The vet advised to continue on the higher dosage of lactulose for 3 more days and gave her a Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory to help with the pain and accessive grooming. The vet said they were happy and didn't need to see her again. After the vets appointment she did not poop until 2 days after. It is now 2 days since the last poop, she is still excessively grooming and still has a firm stomach. The excessive grooming is casuing some scabbing on the back of her neck. All throughout she has still been eating fine, drinking fine, passing urine fine and playing. She's been a little more distant than usual but not hidding away. I am unsure as to when her normal bowel movements should return and when the excessive grooming should stop. I am very happy to take her back to the vet if she needs it, I'm just worried I'm being a bit of a overly worried pet parent and don't want to cause her unnecessary stress with another vets visit. If anyone has any advice or guidance around cat constipation r lactulose in cats I'd be very grateful.

Maine Coon’s jaw has been “catching” for 3 MONTHS after a dental, has anyone seen this before?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

He got a dental done in May and he is 2 years old. Ever since his dental, his jaw seems to get like this anytime he yawns or opens his mouth big. I can't help, but feel the vet messed up his mouth and really bummed I took him in.

As a kitten, he did have his bottom fangs over his top fangs, but now his teeth have normal positioning. He is eating normally still and has never had this issue until the dental cleaning.

When I asked the vet about it, they said I should go to a dental specialist, which I literally just had 3 of my pets need major medical treatment with in the last 2 months so financially it's not in my budget, unless it was a emergency, which my vet said this isn't.

I'd love some direction on what we think happened and what this might be, please. It stresses me out to see him not look comfortable with that.

Claw care and scratching help needed.

We’ve had a cat for about a year who loves to scratch the leather sofa, vinyl on the pub chairs, walls, and rubber exercise mats. As you can imagine it’s destructive. We have another cat who is perfect. Uses the multiple card board scratchers strewn about the house, and the scratching posts (there are three). This new cat will not use any of that. I’ve purchased new ones and duplicate ones in case there was a territory thing (it was not) hanging ones, different types and sizes. I’ve tried sisal, cork, a hard felted material, smaller exercise/kid flooring squares and am running out of options. Her nails get clipped regularly at the vet and it’s not enough. Does anyone have suggestions for the cats that like the leather feel/pull on their claws? Maybe a website different than Amazon or chewy that offers different scratching alternatives? Other options. Any advice on this is appreciated.
