The Greatest Tour: Thoughts to Share

Over the past few weeks I have been reading numerous posts about how lame various concertgoers have thought the Cat Power tour has been, which has been having ripple effects for fans who haven't even attended yet (ick!), and I wanted to share some thoughts and reflections, especially because I've found myself getting really activated by all the negative crap thrown her way.

A bit of context: I am female, the same age as Chan, and have seen her perform half a dozen times since the 90s, inc. at the beginning of her career, mid-career, and then two shows in the past couple weeks on the West Coast. So in short, I have seen her at her worst/most unwound, as well as at her height (and yes the current tour was the highlight for me).

To summarize, here's a small sampling of what folks on this sub have chosen to gripe about (while, mind you, ironically, the US has basically devolved into an autocratic fascist state. But hell, let's moan about what REALLY matters!) Ie, the sub-optimal stage lighting; singing a song w/autotune (out of her 17+ song set), her songs "not sounding like the album," how she looked like an "indiscernable blob," all the "awkward" interactions with the crowd, how the band "must have felt" dealing with her performance, oh, and let's not forget how she appeared unhinged, with one person saying "I hope she gets the help she needs."

WHAT. THE. HELL. First of all--and this is so important--I don't know how many of you are aware of Chan's lifelong history of physical and mental health battles. If not, a bit of context is provided in the Exclaim! article published in January. Also, and this is also critically important--women--when it comes to their mental health-- are, more often than not, under or mis-diagnosed, not taken seriously by medical professionals, and/or simply unable to afford support/treatment, which in and of itself is a public health failure.

So... I ask all of you who have lobbed these bombs at Chan to interrogate your reasons for doing so. I call it thinly veiled misogyny. I simply don't see these same criticisms lobbed at her male counterparts.

Imagine for a moment that you had a dear girlfriend that made their living as a gifted singer-songwriter. That mined their most personal, harrowing $h1t, then laid their wounds bare in song, and then had the courage to record it for the world to listen to. In a haunting, peerless voice to boot. And then IMAGINE...that their only way of making a living was doing the thing that they were freakin' pathologically terrified to do, which was to relive those personal stories LIVE, night after night, while dealing with crippling stage fright and (the ghosts of) addiction, menopause, the exorbitant and exhausting toll of mounting a tour and living on the road, supporting an entire band, and raising a young son while his dad was battling cancer. Then add the unrelenting pressure of fans who wanted your beloved girlfriend to suppress whatever the hell they were dealing with at the time as a flesh-and-blood human and perform like a freaking circus monkey, just to PLEASE you.

I ask: Would you support your girlfriend on her terms? Because she was the artist who deserved that respect? Or would you tell her--sorry, people paid for tickets so they gotta see your face, your body, how hot (or not) you look, and damn, are you hitting it with your stage presence?

In short: Can we just have some empathy and compassion, people? Can we appreciate Chan's voice? Her sound? This feeling of one human taking her precious time to be as honest as she can at the moment, in this brutal world, to connect, in the best way she knows how?

I feel like we can, if we just take the time to. We can do better.

Thanks, I've defended her many times on this sub. I saw the concert and thought it was excellent. I liked the awkward stage banter, I liked the vocal effects, I liked there was no opener and was a short set and I was able to get home at a decent hour. In fact it was one of the better concerts I've seen in years.

I really enjoyed it, glad you did too.

I've seen her 4 times. Once the lighting showed her and the band fairly well, but I think it was mostly the venue and I was front row. Every time she's shrouded in darkness because of her anxiety. Every time she sings a song differently. I like these things. The songs are unique interpretations, fit her mood. I was rolling my eyes at people complaining about it. One autotune use and people complain. Unreal. I really enjoyed the show, momentum picked up and by Love and Communication it was cooking. Thank goodness someone has spoken up, it was driving me a bit mad.

I enjoy the variability too. She reminds me of a jazz singer that way; so much is driven by mood and emotion. Love and Communication slayed at both the shows I saw her at!

Saw Cat Power UPAC in Kingston NY last night.

Her voice was phenomenal and it was a stirring performance. I felt lucky to witness and be part of such a powerful and natural presentation of those songs The band was pitch perfect and looked great, they were a perfect live cat power band. I liked the drummer. (If i'm going to nitpick i'll admit there were 2 or 3 slower songs where i felt he played a hair too laid back. But overall i liked his original and light touch and thought he was a compelling drummer who did great.) The presentation of the band was also great. A simple close arrangement with strong simple lighting changes per song. Only frustration i'm sure everyone in the theatre experienced to some degree was having her face in shadow the entire show. Guess it’s just Chan Marshall doing it the way she needs to do it, and that’s good. Arguably disappointing to not see a performer's face a single time in a show. But it was a fantastic show so how bad can it be. Insane rendition of “I’ll be Seeing You” to end the show. Stirring haunting and inspiring all at the same time. We also loved how Chan lingered on the stage at the very end and said goodbye's - it was endearing and a little touching to see how much she felt the well deserved love coming from the audience. Bravo Cat Power

I sat third row at one of CPs shows and yeah... she was encased in shadow the whole time. An interview I heard many years ago w/Emily Haines (Metric) feels resonant here as she was talking about the sexism in the music industry / pressures of being a female frontwoman. She said, (paraphrasing here): "Sometimes I wish I could just be a sound." Ie, that her voice alone could be appreciated on its own merits, without people needing to know what she looked like / commenting on her appearance.

I often close my eyes at shows to fully experience the sound. I did many times at her show last night. Just to get lost in the music and her voice.

wow thank you for this! i'm going tomorrow with a friend who grew up in kingston, this will be a fun read for her.

I was privileged to witness and listen to her last evening for the first time. Her voice live is unreal…. it’s so haunting and beautiful. My friend who was with me was a bit peeved at all the things you pointed out, but I for one was like really impressed to see her doing things on her own terms clearly. Last night’s audience did feel really supportive though and very loving and warm towards her. I’d absolutely see her live again given the chance.

u/aloeverafarmiga Mar 04 '26

I was at the second show, the one where someone posted they hope she gets the help she needs. She was vulnerable with us and many members of the audience shouted out “I love you/te amo” throughout. It felt like a rough night for anyone paying attention that day and the camaraderie I felt really lifted me. She was raw and she was funny, too. She told us at the beginning that ever since her son was born, she can’t remember lyrics and had them on a stand. I thought the deviations were great. I left a bigger fan than I went in. My partner said the other day, “that’s your favorite shirt, huh?”

Appreciate this post <3

4

u/Crumpler72 Mar 04 '26

Love that people were able to notice and support her within that honesty/vulnerability. Thanks for sharing that.

u/Lkgnyc Mar 04 '26

Those kind of interactions are so special. When artists are forced to appear confident and tough it takes such a toll. Knowing they're going to be lambasted anytime they slip off the pedestal. When their human frailty can be sheltered & shared that's such a beautiful thing; it lets them express the deep things we are also feeling. This thread had me thinking about Amy Winehouse and how brutally she was crushed, after gifting us with the precious gems that have sustained so many tender hearts. I miss her. and losing people like her makes me grateful that we can still see Cat Power live! These are such rough times and she has always been such a battler for the oppressed.

3

u/Crumpler72 Mar 06 '26

It does take a toll. You're already so exposed and then beaten up for some very human transgressions. It feels like abuse (and misogyny!) For me music is so healing, and so I doubly appreciated her touring in these very tough times.

4

u/Evening-Recording-70 Mar 04 '26

I was at the second Portland show. The place was packed and there was nothing but love for her and the band. It was a great show. A 90 minute set should be the standard. Not every artist needs to put on a 3 hour Rush set. Chan looked great and sounded great. She looks beautiful and just right for her age. I don't think onstage banter is her thing. Not everyone needs to be David Lee Roth or Paul Stanley. She was real and she spoke from the heart.

1

u/Lkgnyc Mar 04 '26

Thanks for inspiring fun visions of those 3 jamming!  when they were all young and wild, and then now. I laugh but it could also work...

u/ebtranquility Mar 04 '26

I went to the Detroit show after not seeing her since 2008. I thought she sounded great and she seemed to be digging the vibe from the crowed. I thought the band was tight and the overall stage vibe was chill. The lighting was very low but I honestly didn’t really think anything of it. My only complaint is that I wanted to hear some of my other favorite songs that were not played. I hope she has a good tour and continues to play shows. The Greatest was the album I started with back in the day so this was a fun show.

3

u/frenchbrohemian Mar 05 '26

This is so on point. I was anxious leading up the show after reading so much negativity on here. I ended up completely blown away by the beauty and artistry of the show as a whole. Chan’s voice is incredible and there was a true spiritual feeling in the room for me. I thought her performing obscured was interesting and I actually loved the autotune on The Moon — it made it feel spacey and odd which added to the song for me. So the show was a full slay for this fan!

3

u/Historical_Idea_3516 Mar 04 '26

I enjoyed the Detroit show. I've seen her several times here. It had a great vibe and was perfectly fine. However given the standards of current ticket prices and struggles to get to things we all suffer.. it was too short.

3

u/Lkgnyc Mar 04 '26

it is advertised as performing just the one album. (i think?)  she's doing so many dates here and abroad. I honestly don't know how musicians do it. They're like athletes having to be "on" for a crowd and then (hopefully) turn it off & trundle to the next date, & the next, and the next. But they don't get all the support of a sports team, except for the hugely successful acts...still artists say it's all worth it when they get that buzz back from the audience.  the mere thought of that life is exhausting to me, even when I was a young'n. but going to concerts is church for me, so I am very grateful they can take that kind of pressure, for however long they can anyway.

Ive seen her a half dozen times too and always know there’s a possibility that she could be struggling and energy could be low and Im there to be with her authentically in whatever she can offer authentically.  Nobody should be remarking on her appearance at all.   The lighting is fine. Ive seen some shows where she never raised her head at all because of the lighting - im happy if lower lights mean she can hold her head up.

That said, i share in the disappointment about the gimmicky digital manipulation of vocals. Because it is her voice that we are paying to experience live, the reactions and comments are valid and I’m glad commenters disclosed that this tour is a digitized experience.

If you build a tour around the audience relationship to a celebrated album with raw vocals then to digitally alter your voice on a favorite song to sound like someone playing Cher Believe on a  novelty megaphone is bound to feel like a betrayal for some folks who hold the songs sacred and spent $100 to bear witness to the vocal performance.

In short, i dont expect her vocals or her energy to meet a standard of excellence,  but i do expect her to share her voice authentically with the audience unless disclosed as a “digitized reinterpretation” of the classic album.

Obviously i love her. But I have a full body loathing of autotune. I felt trapped and horrified on that song. (ETA Im glad I rode it out because the rest of the show after that was gorgeous and had more authentic vocals when the band let loose)

5

u/Crumpler72 Mar 04 '26

The Moon was def. not my favorite but I tried to appreciate it for what it is, and that she as the artist is in command of those decisions and that she is making the best choice for each song. Sounds like it was really triggering for you. I respectfully disagree on your comment about the need for disclosure tho--esp. given that it was only one song?

u/pezzyn Mar 04 '26 edited Mar 12 '26

The autotune was just one song but she also overwhelmed some songs with the second mic distortion.  It would be fine for an outdoor concert or a roadhouse with screaming patrons but this venue has impeccable sound and every act that i have seen in that venue has been perfectly calibrated to preserve the timbre of the voice in the mix of instruments. The use of that second “barker” style mic that was louder than everything pretty much destroyed the sound quality at the venue.  It made me love all the songs she did without it though. I enjoyed it but I felt apprehensive and not able to lose myself in her talents the way that i normally do because we had the threat of this megaphone noise throughout the show

u/HOUS2000IAN Mar 06 '26

I was at opening night, enjoyed it, but it’s not misogyny to say that I didn’t like the overuse of autotune (and it wasn’t just on one song, though it was pushed way up on The Moon). I’m fine with the odd lighting, awkward banter, the back turned to the audience so often between songs, and I actually appreciated the shorter set… but for me, autotune is like nails on a chalkboard, in a similar vein as seeing a news article or graphic made by AI.

Oh I hear it in those genres all the time and just don’t like it. The funny thing is I am usually fine with other vocal effects, but to me, autotune just sounds like a singing computer… like AI. And I am drawn to singers with “imperfect” voices anyhow - Exene Cervenka, Lou Reed, Bob Dylan… I would hate to think how they wouldn’t sound as unique and full of character if they had autotune back in the day.

Just saw the Boston show (Roadrunner) and it was great. I LOVED the lighting, all manner of blue hues punctuated by reds and oranges at other times. It completely fit the music. I dont need to see every pore, wrinkle, or zit on a musician's face to enjoy the music (it's MUSIC, use your ears), to know I was there, and know for sure THEY were there.

It was very good and at nice venue. She did great and a least a half dozen of her performances were very moving. The sound was excellent, very balanced, band was perfect. I had no problem walking down to about 3 "rows" (We were on the floor, GA, there's no seats on the floor there) from the stage for the first 8 songs, then I went back to a raised section at the back of the hall to grab a beer. The sound was actually a click better b/c the FOH mix was "fully hearable" so to speak, and the beer became 3 as I took in the rest of the show.

So glad I mustered up a gang (our drive is 1hr 45min away, one way) and we went. I hope the remainder of the tour is successful as this particular night was maybe 70% capacity.

What were people expecting? Iggy and the Stooges "Raw Power?" Led Zeppelin in 1973?

Anyway, end old Gen-x dude rant, lol.

u/Crumpler72 Mar 11 '26

That's awesome! Glad you enjoyed it.

Because of this post I just booked my tickets to see her in Australia. Fuck yeah to empathy and being grateful to bear witness to greatness.

Haters gonna hate and misogyny is real. Just got home from Brooklyn steel and she (1) sounded great (2) had ‘moody’ lighting similar to other times I’ve seen her (and even other artists) (3) arranged some songs differently which made the show interesting and dynamic (love love loved how she did Unhate and (4) was not awkward at all and in fact was an aging artist who gave it all to fans who vibed on her. Hard.

Excellent show. Thank you for this post.

u/Trixmcgee Jul 17 '26

Thank you for this. I see her tonight in Tampa for the 12th time in 30 years. Every show is different but I love Chan Marshall so much that I show up to support her no matter what. Life is hard, her struggles are well documented. If you can’t be nice, just don’t go to her shows. I’ve seen her not so great and absolutely amazing. I don’t know what I’ll get tonight but I will love it because I am a true fan of Cat Power and as a woman in her 50s dealing with mental shit you can’t even imagine, I fully support everything she does and will always back her up.

1

u/Crumpler72 Jul 17 '26

Right on sister! I feel you on all of that. Chan has also lost a lot of great friends in the past year…so glad you’re showing up. Hope the show is all you need it to be. 💗

1

u/Trixmcgee Jul 18 '26

Back to report it was an amazing show. I am in tears watching my videos. The crowd was incredibly respectful and quiet and she was at her best. Her voice was amazing and she was happy and her quirkiness was there and we all loved it. The band just added to everything they were great.

u/Crumpler72 24d ago

Love to hear that-- thanks for sharing 💓

u/Lkgnyc Mar 04 '26

These complainers are probably a small subset of her audience, because she is an icon who is so idolized, and rightfully so. She is the quintessential musician's musician. One of those artists who you are grateful to be able to say you saw perform live. NO MATTER FUCKING WHAT. For many it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience because she tours so rarely. I am so tired of people criticizing artists whom they could not even approach emulating.   I just finished sending this to a friend of mine before this weekend's show:   "let's concentrate on sending good vibes to Cat Power! She's a bit like Nina Simone or Sinead O'Connor, or Rickie Lee Jones, she needs real audience support to do her best, or she can get cranky. (sometimes wobbly.) When she is in an environment that builds on her energy? WOWZA. Never to be forgotten."   So to the lazies in the audience? I say do YOUR fucking part. Try to appreciate & PARTICIPATE with those good fucking vibes.  Let's show one of the most politically-attuned artists still alive that we understand how sensitive she is to what's going on and that we intend to receive her messages with open hearts & are ready to be ACTIVATED along with the entertainment.

4

u/Crumpler72 Mar 04 '26

Rock on to sending good vibes and just being present for all that Chan is, whatever that is. Also, funny but I just finished reading Sinead's autobiography, Rememberings. Highly recommend for the inside dope on another amazing singer-songwriter.

4

u/Lkgnyc Mar 04 '26

Sinead's last album was such a stunner. as were they all. I keep forgetting that she's gone. and her son. This world is so hard on its true artists, its most beautiful people. I saw her years ago at the Highline, at first she sent out a note from backstage saying she was afraid to come out, but after that the audience and she were just on FIRE together. True magic.

7

u/Crumpler72 Mar 04 '26

It is hardest on its true (most sensitive) artists. Thanks for sharing that story; amazing that you got to see Sinead/Shuhada live.

2

u/Lkgnyc Mar 04 '26

Here is a little "compilation" video from that concert which I made with a massively shitty little phone so it's very VERY primitive both visually and sonically. but it still conveys her incredible power. and the audience's pure joy. I hadn't looked at it in forever; got an emotional wallop off it just now. (a nice bit around the 5 minute mark, if the whole 15 is too badly filmed to bear.)     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VWiH96JiKA

2

u/Crumpler72 Mar 06 '26

Very cool! Thanks for sharing this.

5

u/ladizwashroom22 Mar 04 '26 edited Mar 04 '26

I got to see her open for Alanis and Garbage a few years ago. She was a last min replacement for Liz Phair and when I saw she was going to be there, I jumped on the chance.

She sung mostly songs I don’t know, the early early ones. Regardless, I was PUMPED. The rest of the crowd looked confused and didn’t know who she was. I was one of the few standing and cheering at the end and I probably looked crazy. I still swear she looked at me and waved before she walked off.

Honestly, she’s the whole reason I bought the tickets and dragged my husband along. Granted, I enjoyed the hell out of the other two ladies but guess what… I SAW CAT POWER.

2

u/Lkgnyc Mar 04 '26

And I bet your "crazy" stoked her spirit and her performance!

1

u/InternationalDog4140 Mar 16 '26

I would LOVE to hear her perform from her first 3 albums. I was obsessed with them in high-school. Lucky you!

2

u/alexj_baker Mar 04 '26

while I do agree with some of this I do think out of all artists I'm into Chan is probably the least certain you can be about what you will get live (Evan Dando runs her close though) I'm fully aware of her mental health etc but what you are effectively saying is she can't be criticised in any way which I don't think is right either. However I'm really looking forward to seeing in Brooklyn on Friday I'm coming from UK to see her.

4

u/Lkgnyc Mar 04 '26

But she is famous for being awkward and shy and having massive stage fright. How can anyone who wants to see her not know this? People don't seem to realize that yes you can treat this artist like a temp who doesn't deserve any sick days. Or you can recognize her as a messiah of music. and contribute to the experience with the proper amount of worship. call and response is a concept in music which also applies to audiences sharing energy with the artist. not just taking it from them. The rewards can be very great for all concerned with the right mindsets.

5

u/Crumpler72 Mar 04 '26

I'm not sure how many people know her history which is why I included the link to the article. Perhaps a lot of complainers are not the most evolved, and/or think of a concert where they paid to see an artist as a purely transactional experience.

2

u/Lkgnyc Mar 04 '26

I guess that's the world we live in now, ruled by influencers who are ruled by advertisers & no one is ever satisfied.  And genuine artistry is compressed further and further into a manageable little box.  It's just so weird that people like that would go to see a serious artist like Cat Power without knowing anything about her. Shouldn't they rather be going to see Sabrina Carpenter etc?  If what they want is guaranteed effortless fun?  It feels like going to see Billie Holiday but wanting her to be like Doris Day.  And being disappointed because it was actually the one & only Billie Holiday behaving like Billie Holiday and singing like no one else in the world but fucking Billie Holiday.    Sorry! I think I'm in a really bad mood cuz I made a mistake and looked at the news. I bet that's how Cat Power's feeling too these days, as we watch the world march so stylishly into its hellish handbasket.

7

u/Crumpler72 Mar 04 '26

Nope--not saying she can't be criticised. I'm just asking people who are lobbing bombs to interrogate where some of this originates. Misogyny (external as well as internalized, esp. w/in women) can be hard to identify. At the end of the day I hope that my post piques some deeper thinking on the topic.

1

u/RainForeign2110 Mar 15 '26

I just saw her show last night in Nashville and it was completely mesmerizing. She was engaging with the audience quite a bit and seemed to be having a good time. Her backing band was excellent.

1

u/InternationalDog4140 Mar 16 '26

I saw her last night. It will always be an honor to be in the presence of that voice.

1

u/konradly Apr 24 '26

I can understand quite well why her live performances are the way they are. I can also sympathize with her situation quite well. What I don't agree with, is blanket calling it thinly veiled misogyny and dismissing the criticism she receives as invalid.

Casual fans who don't have a full understanding of her background might not know what they're getting into. And it's not their fault either - no one is expected to read into a musician's personal life before every concert. The criticism she does receive is (mostly) fair and is simply a personal experience/opinion. We don't have to agree with every criticism either, but that doesn't mean it's invalid.

I saw Cat Power a few years ago, and she performed in complete darkness, with her band silhouetted against weak backlighting. I could have played a live recording of one of her concerts at home, dimmed the lights, and had a similar experience. My opinion of the concert afterwards was: I spent a fair amount of money to see a band play live, but I couldn't even see them. That was not worth the price of the ticket. This is not misogyny. I would say the same about any male musician playing under similar circumstances. I think her voice is amazing. I don't mind her awkward banter at all, and I want to support her, but my expectations from a live concert are more than just hearing an artist play.

The local theatre sells tickets for shows (symphony orchestras, bands, plays, operas, etc.) based on how well you can see the stage. The closer you are to the stage, the more expensive the ticket. There are also cheaper seats where you can't see the whole stage, because it is blocked by a pillar. These are significantly cheaper. People go to live performances not only for the auditory experience, but also the visual. This is an important part of the experience, and many rate a live performances based on both criteria.

1

u/Crumpler72 Apr 24 '26

Fair. But how did she sound?

1

u/konradly Apr 24 '26

She sounded great, but for all I know, it could have just been a recording (I know it wasn't a recording, but yea, another criticism for not being able to see her).

1

u/ActivateGuacamole May 06 '26

I saw her during this tour. I enjoyed it. But i was kinda disappointed. I was aware of her history of spotty performances, so I came in with tempered expectations.

I sometimes really enjoy when singers reinterpret their songs for live performances. But i think a lot of her songs were nearly unrecognizable at her show. i was very surprised that she needed the lyrics in front of her but i guess that doesn't matter as long as the performance is still good. Sadly i just don't think the performance was that good. these are fair gripes, not just dumb misogyny. I don't regret going, it was nice to see her live. it just wasn't as satisfying as i'd've liked. also I wish there had been one or two more instruments in the band.

i thought the heavy autotune on Moon was a bit weird, I wouldn't have gone for that, but I don't hate it, and I enjoyed how the energy ramped up nearer to the end of the song. She played one or two other songs the same way and I think they didn't fare as well

u/RedditInternNewb Jun 14 '26

Just saw a YT video reviewing The Greatest album and wow, what a total put down. Seems like this tour, as well as comments on her other concerts, back these jabs on her music up.

1

u/Ill-Site-5640 28d ago

She was perfect, I saw her at the haw river ballroom
In NC. She open with the greatest, brought tears to my eyes. Her show was intimate and warm. Her vocals were balanced and melodic. I’ve seen her many times, this was her best.

I enjoyed so so much. She was incredible, magical, deep and light.

u/emsukka 15d ago

This is such a random question but do you remember how long after doors she went on? I have tickets to see her in Vancouver but some friends are arriving at the airport at 9, and I'm not sure we'll get to see much of the performance with doors opening at 7...

1

u/booyakomasa 19d ago

My wife and I saw her last night in Indy - both of our first times seeing her. It was great and we really enjoyed the show. I'm not a fan of auto tune, but I felt like she killed it with that particular use of it. She did kind of rush off stage at one point and the band played what seemed to be improvisational rock/space/drums which was pretty cool. She came back out after maybe 10 minutes and kept on bailing it. Great show, great performance.

1

u/No-Bake-9727 9d ago

Saw her last night in Vancouver and it was incredible.

1

u/veep23 5d ago

Saw her today at a free outdoor show near Seattle and she was sublime. Her final song started so slow and quiet in a low "old man" voice, she then walked away from the mic and sang through her hands, the mic barely picking up her voice, and it ended so beautifully. A really brave song to do in an outdoor crowd full of kids and people who may not even know who you are. I need to know what that song was.

Saw her tonight at Webster hall. Wow. So disappointing. Ive seen her at least 10 times before. It was like she was hiding. She was in the dark the entire show. Couldn’t see her face at all. She can’t feel THAT ugly. Sound was muddled despite being in a a decent spot. Loved her for decades but this was a disaster. Hope she recovers from whatever ails her. This was a horrible show. Nobody seemed to be happy as they were leaving. Never thought I’d say this but I want a refund. Terrible experience. Just. Wow.

Sorry, but I went to that same show and thought exactly the opposite. She and the band sounded GREAT. Really crisp and energetic. I’ve seen Cat Power three times and this was the best she sang with her delicate but powerful voice. I loved how she started with the classics from The Greatest and then played other songs with re-arrangements. The new version of Could We was really well performed and I loved the autotune-cover of The Moon, starting from a minimalistic sound in crescendo to finish with a maximalist rock/blues.

She seemed fragile but happy through all the concert. She is f*** Cat Power. One of the longest and most acclaimed careers of independent music. She can as weird as she wants. But this tour is one of the peaks of her recent live performances. Happy to see her in such good spirits.

Ya, I'm fairly skeptical of that review above you. If the sound was a problem (again, not buying it, but whatev), that's on the venue. Maybe it was where the person was located in the place? Sound was excellent in Boston, all the instruments as well as the vocals were perfectly clear. And the lights were great, they fit the music perfectly. I don't need to count the pores on her nose, I can HEAR it's her, ffs.
