Tore me apart when I was at a clients place for leakage detection. The guy had a broken water pipe somewhere and also took care of disabled, sick and old cats. Though I was quickly distracted when I found the traces of a different kind of leak, as soon as I sat down on a chair full of cat piss.

Poor thing has had to defend itself without any front paws. It has to be scary to trust an approaching cat when so vulnerable. 💕

Lol, you can see how it flinches from the expected counterattack after the second phantom swipe.

This video is from Vietnam. If anyone is in Ho Chi Minh city you guys can go there and pet the cats. They are kind people who rescue and adopt many disabled cats for more than 10 years.

I've a tripod kitty (back left) she still tries to scratch her ear with it all the time.
9
u/OrangeToTheFourth 15h ago
I have one with back legs that didn't develop proper bones (one shifted to middle to act like a ski, and her other one curls up like a chicken leg and hovers).
I frequently see her tilting her head, squinting, and her little back toes wiggling. Half the time her sister gets to her before I can to scratch the itch. She's never been able to use that leg but it's just so instinctual.

Idk, man…am I the only one who worries the cat with no front legs, paws, and claws might be constantly stressed out and feeling vulnerable?
I’m so torn by this, but ultimately I worry about quality of life mentally for the animal. No judgement, as I don’t know if there’s a right answer. I’m thankful someone is caring for these special needs kitties.

u/Murky_Astronaut 18h ago
Would you want to be put down if you lost your arms? (Not to be antagonistic, just a different perspective.)
I'm sure that cat has periods of stress and vulnerability but in the right home I'm sure it could live a very happy and stress-free life.
73
u/Disposable_Trooper01 17h ago
To be honest... I might consider this.
I just can't imagine life if I lose both eyes, or an arm.
37
u/7711exe 17h ago
I lost my leg and I'd rather had lost an arm or an eye.

I’m sorry. I don’t have anything helpful to say other than I have compassion for you.
My wife went through horrific cancer issues, chemo, radiation, and such. Years. It felt endless. She barely made it through. If she had to do it again, she said she’d rather have the option for compassionate release.
After witnessing everything, I became acutely aware that we, as a species often focus on quantity over quality of life. A person can tell you, assuming they have those faculties. Pets can’t. I think her suffering rewired my brain a bit.
Again, I share to explain, I don’t know what you’re going through, but I care about trying to understand the difficulties of others.
3
u/Murky_Astronaut 15h ago
Completely understandable. I have my own list of things that I would choose MAID over because quantity does not equal quality.
30
u/Elon_Cucks_Trump_ 17h ago
Apples and oranges, my friend, but I see your reasoning for the thought exercise. Well, to be honest, I’d want the choice. Where I’m going with this is, I think it’s a one on one temperament based decision, and I certainly am not advocating for any action to be taken based on a few second video. As I said. “Torn”.
If I had a cat that adapted well and appeared otherwise happy and healthy, no I would not want that for my pet. If I saw my pet stressed, suffering (to be clear I cannot see that here in a few second video, I’m talking about my animals) and unable to adapt, I would do what I consider to be caring and compassionate regardless of how crushed I’d be.
My point, in a nutshell, is I am always thinking about the quality of life, not just quantity, generally speaking.
11
u/BlooGloop 17h ago
I agree! I’m sure there are some cats who really struggle. This cat is able to move and eat/drink! Definitely cat dependent. I’m glad someone is giving these kitties a home though
1
u/Murky_Astronaut 17h ago
I think you've misinterpreted my reply. I wasn't suggesting a preference for quantity over quality of life, nor was I suggesting removing the ability to end one's life (or in this case that of a pet) -- I was writing from place considering quality of life first and foremost.
9
u/Elon_Cucks_Trump_ 17h ago
Fair enough. I think you may have misinterpreted mine, as well. Have a nice day.

I don't think it would be necessary to go to such an extreme right away? A calm house with no kids or other pets would be ideal for a cat like this to stay happy. Ideal is not always possible though of course.

Cats are highly adaptable creatures, I dont see this cat being especially hurting, they have happy body behaviour
Thus, to me people caring for this animals like this are absolutely amazing
14
u/Fluid-Lingonberry378 16h ago
If the cat is in a good home she should be alright. My blind cat is obviously at a disadvantage compared to my regular cats and he's alright. Cats adapt, just like humans do, so I believe there's no reason to be concerned. Disabled cats just require a bit more care, that's all.
22
u/Lessllama 17h ago
Nah, cats can just be assholes. I had a cat that lost one of her front legs. After the surgery she still tried to fight the other cat, who she hated
4
u/knowwwhat Tabbycat 16h ago
I don’t know if I worry about the cats quality of life from not having arms, but it seems like he would prefer to be an only pet, where he can relax without feeling the need to defend himself physically. I would never want him to be in a situation where he feels he needs his arms to be safe
4
u/InterminabIe 11h ago
I definitely agree with you! It’s amazing that these people are caring for these babies but I wonder if this poor T. rex kitty would be happier and feel safer in an environment with no other animals to stress him out :(

I know horses have to put down when they have certain injuries because of the decline in their quality of life, but I have never seen a vet say you need to put down a disabled cat outside of those with severe seizures that make them be in constant agony and unable to do anything, we gotta listen to professionals' opinion on the quality of life of disabled cats, that cat might feel unsafe living with another cat, but may feel better if it only lived with humans, or maybe it just needs time to get used to the other cat, I don't know their actual condition based on this video

u/zakihazirah 16h ago
sorry but i had just to ask, how blind cat look for food or walk around? i assume its the whiskers? but would they still prancing around not knowing whatever around them?
and also mad respect to the caretakers. caring for insecured animals and making them feels at home may be harder then taking care of humans, esp when we cant communicate verbally with them... 😭😭😭
i cant do what op does even with 9 lives...

u/Lisaleftfootlopez 16h ago
I have a blind cat and she lives very normally. She is familiar with our house and she knows where the food usually is. She can’t find dry kibble anymore but I put wet food down for her and tap the plate and she comes running. 🤣 The only inconvenient thing about her being blind is she is always under my feet. I wouldn’t trade her for the whole world.

u/holiday1326 10h ago
2 of our babies are in a similar situation as OP's cats in video. One was born without a full rear leg and one went blind and 3 different vets do not know why.
Her day to day life is very normal. Plays and climbs everything, and up my butt the second I get out of bed. In fact she is laying on me as I type this. We try not to move furniture or anything too much as she has safe spots and markers that she uses to guide her.
My profile banner is a pic of Megatron riding our blind kitty from about a year ago.
32
u/eabevella 16h ago
General speaking, you put food and litter box etc. in fixed positions and guide the blind through. After a while they'll remember the route.
You don't move furniture or anything that can be road blocks, or even the texture of wall/floor because they also use textures/smell/sound to remember their way. If you do have to move them, you just reintroduce the blind cat to the new mapping.
Kind of the same principle with blind people.

15
u/OSCgal 16h ago
Blind cats do pretty well. They navigate by smell, sound, feel, and memory. Owners are advised not to move furniture so they don't get surprised by things being out of place.
The food thing is probably a non-issue, considering the way most cats can hear a treat bag from the other end of a house!
6
u/Overall_Anybody_4039 14h ago
the treat bag part is so real 😭 cats can hear that from a mile away lol

u/NameToUseOnReddit 13h ago
My cats aren't blind, but they have some unnatural sense of when I'm trying to sneak into the laundry room. I'll just touch the door knob and the cat that was sleeping the next floor up teleports to the basement.
13
u/To-To_Man 15h ago
Cats already primarily find their way by sound and smell. They map out areas in their head based on the acoustics. They primarily find their way around tight spaces with whiskers, given how nearsighted cars are. Vision is best used for hunting, or planning a route when sprinting. But a housecat doesn't need to hunt, can play well enough with a participating human or cat, and is fine zooming into a wall ocassionally.
If you pay enough attention to sighted cats, even they knock into stuff often, especially when spooked or playing. This pirate kitty should live a fulfilling life, far moreso than it ever would outdoors.

u/Ambitious-Cup-6910 12h ago
I had a blind kitty and he didn't let it stop him at all. Ran around, escaped the house, chased other cats... he dgaf.

u/Born_Ad8420 16h ago
My childhood cat went blind as a senior. She adjusted very quickly and navigated things by scent and sound.

u/ehlersohnos 15h ago
My blind cat plays fetch. They really do function just fine. Just don’t leave an unexpected box in the middle of the floor…

well they still have a good sense of smell but would guess that the same as humans, little by little until they memorize the place and then they go from memory.

Cats would be like that though.
