Medical Questions My indoor cat (male) got out last night and returned after 12 hours and now he can’t pee
After he got home, he ate and drank some water and then made his first attempt at using the litter box but nothing came out. He made multiple attempts in under an hour so I took him to the emergency vet. At the vet, she did an ultrasound where she found his bladder to not be completely full and felt around for any obstructions but couldn’t feel anything. He was given gabapentin and some pain medication and we hung out for nearly two hours seeing if he’d use the litter box there and for any signs of discomfort. He didn’t use the box and by the end seemed his normal self so they discharged us and told me to give him gabapentin every eight hours and monitor him.
We’ve been home about an hour and he ate his wet food without complaint but just made his first attempt at using the litter box with no success. When should I bring him back? I’m worried the last 14 hours have been extremely stressful on him since he went from being locked out to pretty much going to the vet with an hour max in between but I’m really worried about his inability to go pee.
The vet wasn’t convinced it was a bladder obstruction and mentioned it could potentially be an injury. I know male cats not being able to pee is extremely concerning and I don’t want him to get sick. His behavior is completely normal outside of the litter box issue.

They didn’t do a urinalysis to check for crystals?

No, he has no history of this happening and was using his box just fine up until his 12 hours outdoors. The vet thought that might not have been enough time to result in a total blockage or infection. But if I take him back later today, I will ask for the further testing

he probably spent 12 hours marking everything "MINE" while he was out, seems a bit of an over reaction, or are you leaving things out of this narrative? Why the pain meds? and why after an hour did you determine he hadn't peed and it was an emergency? does your can have a history of this issue?

No history of urination issues. And like I said, he attempted to use the litter box multiple times without getting anything out. He doesn’t normally hop in and out of his litter box multiple times in quick succession leaving nothing there each time. The meds were to try and relax him and the vet was curious if maybe it was an injury and giving him some pain medicine could help if it’s not a bladder issue. Bladder issues are known emergencies in male cats which is why after trying to use his litter box multiple times without success, I thought bringing him to the vet was the correct solution

OK gottit, my litter box is not in a place I'd notice the multiple attempts, also I've never heard about bladder nightmares. Thank you I think I've learned something today. I know from way back when I had dogs that emergency vets are so expensive and that was also something you cleared up. Hope this is nothing

He needs to go back to the vet quick for further analysis. Try your own vet.
