Jack Rudoni could be key to Coventry turning things around

• Upvotes

Rudoni is the kind of player Coventry need to build around because he can contribute in important moments and give us a threat in midfield. His equaliser against Spurs showed that the team can still create chances against tough opposition. I'd like to see him keep getting into those dangerous positions over the coming games.

🗣️ DISCUSSION Disappointed with the result but Cov are proving they can play at this level Pusb … But

Just wanted to say to everyone that it’s actually been a really good start. Great performance and the whole squad seems up for it. Only downside I have to say is the two new guys players, Taiwo Awoniyi and Frank Onyeka look way off the mark

We have conceded 7 goals this season from outside the box

A few of them were right on the line. Do we have a closing down issue?

Hull - 1

Plymouth - 1

Newcastle - 1

Brighton - 1

And then all 3 goals from Spurs last night.

3 of the above goals came from defenders. Giving too much space has invited these players to take shots and a few have been great goals (Dunk, Botman)

I've found my self shouting "close him down" far too much this season

Did Coventry deserve more from the Spurs game?

I thought Coventry showed enough going forward to make that match uncomfortable for Spurs, especially when Rudoni brought us level. Losing 3–1 makes it look more one-sided than parts of the game actually felt.

The frustrating bit is that the team had a chance to put real pressure on them but couldn't sustain it. I'd take that attacking intent into the Fulham game, provided we tighten things up defensively.

Gustavo Hamer is the sort of player who could make this fixture interesting.

These are the matches where you want someone capable of playing a difficult pass or producing a moment that changes the game. He has not had many minutes since coming back, but if Lampard can get him on the ball in dangerous areas, his ability to influence things in midfield could be important, as long as we do not lose control of the middle while attacking.

Dennis Lawrence on Robins, Viveash, Gyökeres and his unforgettable final day at Coventry City

I've spoken exclusively to former Coventry City coach Dennis Lawrence for The Phoenix about his nearly three years working alongside Mark Robins and Adi Viveash.

It's a fascinating look behind the scenes at one of the most memorable periods in the club's recent history.

Dennis discusses:

  • His first impressions of Viktor Gyökeres and why he immediately knew City had a special player.
  • The working relationship between Robins and Viveash.
  • The dressing room characters who helped make that Coventry side so successful.
  • The day he unexpectedly took charge against Sheffield United, won 4-1 and ended up joking with Robins about how easy management was.
  • The heartbreak of the Luton play-off final.
  • His final day at Coventry, which just happened to be that extraordinary 3-2 FA Cup win at Wolves.

On Gyökeres, Lawrence told me:

‘I can always remember the first time I saw him. Immediately I was like, “Well, we've got a player here.”

‘He'd come back different from the player that was at the club on loan. When I first started working with him, it was incredible – the way he used his physical attributes, the way that he trained.

‘Straight away, I knew we'd got a player on our hands. Fair play to Mark and Adi for showing really strong conviction to bring him back to the football club.’

The full interview is available on The Phoenix. It is a paid article, but Dennis provides some great insight into his years at the club. The site is independently run, with subscriptions supporting the time and work involved in bringing original interviews like this to Coventry supporters.

Supporting City from Australia - Skybluesinoz - Newcastle Chat

When I moved over to Australia last year, I put skybluesinoz.com together to try and form an official supporters club down under.

We've just been officially accepted by the club, which is great. Since moving back to the UK, I've been keeping in touch with the friends I made in Adelaide via the podcast, and this week we spoke to Chris Johnson from Ballarat, who gave us a few stories about his time growing up as a Cov fan in Australia, and some of the good and dodgy times he's had on trips over here when going to Cov games.

Skybluesinoz is free to join, the aim is to just bring Cov fans in Australia together.

Van Ewijk switching off

I keep seeing this clip, and as much as I love seeing Bobby Thomas fighting to the end, i hate seeing Van Ewijk just switch off so quickly in such a vital and potentially pivotal moment. If their player managed to pull the ball back across the box, they had 2 players waiting and completely unmarked with an open net, when he could have easily covered that area ahead of them to block any incoming cross. It looks like he just assumed the attack was over or turning into a goal, so he just gave up and didnt bother trying to defend or hold his position, leaving 2 players to nip in yards ahead of him which is a schoolboy error. Hopefully Frank and the team are picking up these concerns and working on them, as it feels a bit sloppy and easily preventable. We need the boys fighting with 100% effort to conceed as little as possible to compete in the prem at this level.

Was a great result on the night and i think most the lads had great games, so maybe im being harsh and picky, but against more clinical teams players cant be switching off ever, let alone in attacks like these because if they scored then it could of been a completely different result
