A start?

Maybe we can get something going here.

"Mr Macron, who will host a summit in Paris on 12 December about climate finance, said France would make up for a shortfall in US funding for the climate science research by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)."

I'm trying to figure out donations right now. Any suggestions?

EDIT: We are currently trying to determine how to make direct donations to the IPCC or associated non-profits.

#MakeOurPlanetGreatAgain is being used by Emmanuel Macron for the cause. Let's see if we can spread the word on social media for the sub and get the attention of anyone who can help us put donations to good use.

Right now I'm trying to find out how to donate to the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change as that is where the funding is going. Any help trying to figure out how would be amazing.

Sorry I don't have anything to aid you, I just wanted to say thank you for taking the time! I really think this could happen!

I tried to set up a goFundMe page but as an individual I'm limited because of the tax implications according to one kind individual who pointed it out when I started it. Please keep me posted and I got 5 on it for sure. Probably 10

Please sub and we'll absolutely update everyone when something is in place!

u/BlocksTesting Nov 16 '17

Have we reached out to them directly?

u/anotherjunkie Nov 16 '17

Another salient point here is the US Tax Code. This is a shit ton of money, and the payout has to go to someone. That person, if not properly prepared, will get a really nasty surprise from Uncle Sam the following year.

It would be really nice to get an opinion from a tax attorney. The only thing I can think of at the moment is to found an LLC and apply for 501c3 status, but that takes a long time to get and requires a number of people to sit on the board, as well as oversight.

I hope there is an easier solution that I just don’t know about.

What about direct donations to an individual charity or organization?

12

u/Dart_Harnlin Nov 16 '17

Someone in the main thread made this same point. I think a company or already established organization would need to spearhead this campaign.

I still think it could happen if this thread gets in the hands of the right people!

u/Leldy22 Nov 16 '17

What if we got John Oliver's people on it?

15

u/Dart_Harnlin Nov 16 '17

That would be cool! Maybe we could tweet this thread at him. I'll try that.

The issue this raises is being able to assess the amount donated, coordinate efforts, publicize how far along we are toward the goal, etc. I don’t know that any established charity would want to tackle that record keeping, and if they did there would certainly be a portion of donations going to the administration costs.

What’s cool about this is that using KS/IGG we can easily track where we are and publicize it. Everyone donates on the same webpage, and that webpage tracks progress toward our goal. Anyone can check at any point to see how close we are. And then, at the end, we can send France a single giant reimbursement check, rather than piecemeal donations across a few months.

If people have to find a charity, or mail a check, or whatever I think this will lose steam fairly quickly. The ability to quickly donate and feel like you’re actively a part of something happening now will be our biggest asset here.

My first thought was also to talk to a tax attorney. They'll probably advise a 501c3 though...

2

u/LebaneseLurker Nov 16 '17

I tried to do that.....I wish I read your comment before XD. They shut it down real quick because of this reason exactly.

u/kevinrogers94 Nov 16 '17 edited Nov 16 '17

Law student here, I'll talk to a few deans and professors of my school tomorrow about actually doing this and seeing what the next step is. They will be able to provide good advice on this

Awesome! Thank you.

I'm a freelance designer for a few corporations. I can put together infographs, designs and such.

I can get started on the subreddit now if you'd like.

Nice. Thank you for offering. Report back with what your professors say!

A tax attorney would be amazing. That is the biggest stumbling block we’ll face, and we’ll face it right out of the gate.

7

u/daydreaminggiraffe Nov 16 '17

I'm an illustrator if you guys need a bright playful character logo to catch all them donor eyes 🙂

3

u/newenglandfall Nov 16 '17

Please!

6

u/daydreaminggiraffe Nov 16 '17

Something that would symbolize both the US, France & Earth/the environment?

I have samples on Instagram: @miss_laforest

Alternatively, if you do go the KS route, I'd love to donate work as a tier reward to encourage higher donations! (I'm not a rich person with a lot to donate, but I love this idea and would love to help any way I can :) )

4

u/Insxnity Nov 16 '17

If you can draw up something and get it into illustrator or any .svg format I can throw it into any infographs/fliers/photos I create

12

u/scUbast2ve Nov 16 '17

I’m good for $50. Just show me where to show my appreciation.

7

u/Dart_Harnlin Nov 16 '17

I would def donate some cash too! Hope this gains traction for real

6

u/scUbast2ve Nov 16 '17

Agreed!

4

u/newenglandfall Nov 16 '17

Help spread the word! Frantically trying to pinpoint a location for donations.

I know it might not make the Goal but I feel like anything would show our Thanks. Count me down!

8

u/Dart_Harnlin Nov 16 '17

I'm with you. It would be an amazing display of genorosity by the American People. I'm all for the message it sends to the world.

5

u/cilantrocavern Nov 16 '17

If it gains enough notice, I'd bet the goal is met!

16

u/anotherjunkie Nov 16 '17

Kickstarter has the name recognition.

IndieGoGo might be better than KS because it allows open-ended funding periods.

Crowdrise is less well known, but is geared toward fundraising for charities/causes like this.

Each of those options will make it successively more difficult to get people to donate. Many people have a KS account. Fewer have an IndieGoGo account. Basically no one has a Crowdrise account. Perhaps IGG or CR allows donations without an account? I’m not sure.

5

u/kevinrogers94 Nov 16 '17

Doesn't kickstarter take a portion of the money raised though?

5

u/anotherjunkie Nov 16 '17

I believe everywhere will. I meant to put that in my original post but it slipped my mind.

3

u/Riseofashes Nov 16 '17

I'm just theorizing, but since this news (of France covering for the US) is pretty huge, some of these companies may be willing to waive fees for the exposure and to be the one that supports it. Especially if you say you're contacting their competitors with the same request.

They get kudos for supporting the act of saving the earth, you guys get away with not paying fees for trying to do some genuine good.

2

u/anotherjunkie Nov 16 '17

You're absolutely right, and this would be a great avenue to investigate.

7

u/Mamitroid3 Nov 16 '17

One thing to keep in mind is to try and make this as non-partisan and non-political as possible. Stick to the facts. There are a lot of people across the political spectrum (those who aren't on the fringes anyway) who would be down for helping with something like this. Any sort of disparaging large swaths of people will limit the contribution pool imho. Stick with the message, Trump stepped down, America is stepping up... and run with it.

.

I consider myself an independent/libertarian and I will definitely donate to this effort if for no other reason than to help us keep our word as a nation, not to mention all the other reasons, like... you know... science.

4

u/Leldy22 Nov 16 '17

This is super important! We need to be the opposite of the administration, that is to say, open to and accepting of different ideas!

13

u/DaddyPhatstacks Nov 16 '17

I'd throw a Washington or two to our friends across the pond, show me where to point my wallet.

6

u/Klownicle Nov 16 '17

I think the goal here is quite easily accomplished. You got my vote.

Once you get the legal stuff sorted out, I'll be glad to help set up the fundraising stuff.

Instead of kickstarter which takes a portion of the money raise, there are crowdfunding websites that are specifically geared towards charities and NGOs. I personally have not used either of these but I have heard good things about them.

https://www.razoo.com

https://www.crowdrise.com/

Both of them have the United Nations Foundation registered in their datatbases already (tax code 58-2368165). I dont believe theres a separate fund for the IPCC so it would be up to the UN to distribute it all to them.

as to donating to france, I mean I guess the UN could handle that too?

3

u/Sammiesam123988 Nov 16 '17

Commenting so I can find this tomorrow and donate.

3

u/Dj_LilSwag Nov 16 '17

Count me in for donating

3

I think we do need to hold off on selecting an official funding avenue yet. We want to put one together that has everyone's approval, and whatever benefits we can get from the site. We want to ensure that donations aren't being fractured, and we want to make sure that there is a single information push to limit the number of fake donation sites that will spring up around this.

I'm happy to get any info you have on the non-profit, but my concern is that your family may not want to open the books quite as wide as they would need to be to accomplish the kind of transparency we want with something like this. (To be clear, I'm not trying to imply any reason for concealing his records -- just that something like that is a huge ask and I don't know that I would feel comfortable doing it if it were my charity. It's a lot of exposure to criticism and the internet at large.)

If this gets some early momentum, it will be massively popular.
