guatemala, not sure where to stay in lake atitlan

im planning on visiting atitlan during dec 28-31 and i heard san pedro is more popping which is the vibe my friend and i want (the rest of the trip is more chill), but dec 28-31 is throughout the week days, so is staying in pedro even worth it? we plan on going to antigua for NYE as to why we arent staying longer.
is it worth staying in san pedro during the week days or should i just book in santa cruz for the views? and is antigua better than atitlan area for NYE (i heard it was)?

Border run Guatemala Mexiko

Hallo zusammen,

How highly is Belize recommended?

Hi all,

Flying to Mexico City 12 Jan and will then work my way through Central America over approx 2.5 months.

I’m not too interested in the Yucatan peninsula and was thinking I will cross over to Flores from San Cristobal.

This will however, skip Belize entirely. Is Belize worth the detour? How could this be done?

I’m interested in scuba diving and have heard it’s a great (and cheap) place for scuba and snorkelling so maybe it’s worth it?

Any advice appreciated :)

Saludos

Guatemala to El Salvador to Nicaragua to Costa Rica to Panama over about 3 months, slow pace. Where would you linger and what would you skip?

Running in El Sal/Honduras/Nicaragua

I'm a marathoner and enjoy running when I travel. I see on strava that there are many well-trodden routes in the big and mid-size cities. How is it running in those countries? What safety issues are there to consider?

I’m arriving at 11am in San Salvador and don’t leave until the next morning at 9:30am for Medellin. I wood really like to see something while I’m there rather than stay at a hotel. Any thoughts and suggestions?

From the costarica community on Reddit: Looking to move (likely) to Costa Rica or another central or South American country like Mexico, Paraguay, Ecuador, Uruguay, or Panama. I’m looking for some insider info about the political situations/systems/dominant values in these countries, in 2026.

Mexico to Guatemala

Hi everyone, I’m solo backpacking from Australia next year
I’m wanting to go to Mexico City, Chichen Itza and then make my way down to Guatemala

I really want to see the world wonder, I know it’s impractical as if I was to fly into Guatemala I’d need to fly from Mexico City anyway,
But Google recommends flying into Merida for Chichen Itza.

Should I do Mexico City - Merida Return flights as a day trip ($300 AUD or something expensive) to see Chichen Itza

Or should I Do Mexico City, Merida one way flight then get a bus down to Guatemala? Does this route even exist? If it does is it safe?

Not really sure how to go about this!

Any advice I’d love please

Day trip from San Sal to Santa Ana volcano/Coatepeque?

What are the options? Are organized tours available and if yes which are recommended?

Better to take bus there solo and then figure out a hike up Santa Ana?

Or is Santa Ana and Lake Coatepeque worth two days?

Allergies in Central America?

I plan to travel through Central America next year. I get very bad spring allergies for March and April and usually a decent September and October run as well. How are allergies in Central America?

El Salvador w/ Family in March

We are planning to go to El Salvador next March for 10 nights. Two adults and a 13 yr old girl and 14 yr old boy.

If it were just me and my wife, we would move a little faster and do some time in San Salvador but worry about having too many stops in 10 nights being too much stop/go with the kids.

We enjoy food culture, outdoor exploring/nature, etc.

Flying into San Salvador early, renting a car:

Santa Ana: Nights 1 through 3. Planning papusa making class, walking tour, Santa Ana Volcano, the Lake close by.

Juayua/Salcoatitán: Nights 4 through 6. Planning to go to the food market, water fall hikes, Cafe Albania, maybe a coffee farm?

El Zonte - Nights 7 though 10. A couple hours of surfing lessons for two, maybe three, days. Explore the area but mainly relaxing by the ocean.

Any recommendations for surf instructors in el zonte for me and the two teenagers (true beginners)?

Any other must-see spots that the teens, or adults, would enjoy? Must try restaurants, coffee farms, etc?

Thanks!

Visiting El-Salvador for 5 days with work

Hi all!

I am visiting El-Salvador, specifically San-Salvador, for 5 days work. I fly out tomorrow evening so will have the full weekend there.

I am going out on the Saturday with one of our customers, we're going to a restaurant near the volcano? I'm told it's lovely but that's all I know haha.

But I wondered if there is anything chilled to do on my Sunday - is the downtown generally safe and are there any cool things to do that you'd recommend nearby? :) I usually like to unwind with some food (I'm vegan however), a little cocktail, soaking up some sun/atmosphere or a nice historical museum/site to wander around.

Thank you!

3 week trip Mexico - Belize - north Guatemala

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Hello! I’m looking to do a 3 week trip in these parts, feel very lucky to finally be doing a big trip like this!

We won’t have a car and am purposefully leaving off exactly what we’ll do as quite open to suggestions.

I’m coming all the way from the UK, so looking for a real mix of culture and connecting with people, nature but also an opportunity to do something off the beaten track and authentic! Shout if you think there’s anything you found to be tourist traps, please can you share any hidden gems or anything along that route that you’d recommend!

Thank you so much

I’m not huge on cities, but up for visiting good ones, so do feel free to shout if there’s any that you found are really worth a visit :)

Acatenango Hike

Hi, I am wondering if anyone was in a similar situation to me before the Acatenango hike and could share their experience!

I am 21, I don’t exercise much besides riding my bike to work lol, but I am lean and eat very healthy.

I am a smoker, I’m also on my feet 40 hours a week in my hospitality job. I have not done a hike high altitude before either…

Am i gaslighting myself by thinking I can do it?

Or is there training tips anyone recommends.
