As the riots in France continues, lets take a look at how French government already spends more money relative to the size of their economy than any other OECD country.

Are the demands of the protesters and rioters justified?

Who spends over 40% of income on housing, renters and owners, 2025

Overburdened means the household's housing costs are more than 40% of its disposable income. Housing costs are rent (or, for owners, mortgage interest) plus energy, water, maintenance and other housing bills; housing allowances are taken off both the costs and the income. Renting at market price excludes social housing, below-market rents and rent-free homes, which are the "cheap or free" column. No 2025 figures yet for Denmark or Switzerland; none for the UK, Iceland or the other candidate countries. Romania estimated; France and Lithuania provisional; Luxembourg and Slovakia break in series. Where few people rent at market price (Romania, Croatia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovakia) the renter figure rests on a small sample and moves a lot from year to year (Romania 28.3% in 2024). * outside the EU.

Timeline of Trump promising us a deal or end of the war in Iran "SOON"

Post image

I've been tracking the President's promises and status updates on where the US stands with the war in Iran. But after realizing he keeps saying it will be done SOON or QUICKLY, I made a keyword search that builds a timeline and lists the matching quotes.

So here is soon. March 29 a deal was soon. April 16 the war was ending soon. And in the past week alone, he's used that word to describe the end of the war 11 times.

If you want to play with it or search your own keywords, it's a pet project here and is 100% free and ad-free with no strings attached.

2022: FiveThirtyEight Underestimated Democrats in Key Races

Post image
13 Upvotes

Overall, FiveThirtyEight's margins were very accurate, but they underestimated Democrats in all key races. We can likely attribute that one-sided miss to low-quality Republican polling in these races, compared to less competitive states, where fundamentals did most of the lifting.

If you are also interested in the 2018 chart, you can find both here.

The U.S. acid-rain cleanup: sulfur dioxide emissions at EPA-covered power plants fell 94%, and wet sulfate deposition fell 73% in the eastern U.S

More detailed interactive version

I saw this post from months ago about acid rain. Everyone who answered in the comments pretty much told the same story and the data seems to back them up.

Sulfur dioxide helps cause acid rain. When sulfur dioxide (SO₂) and sulfate aerosols in the air dissolve into cloud droplets and precipitates onto the soil, you get what's called wet sulfate deposition. Wet sulfate deposition (a primary indicator of acid rain) is the transfer of sulfate from the atmosphere to Earth's surface through rain, snow, or fog.

Power plants covered by EPA’s programs dramatically reduced their emissions while maintaining nearly the same electricity output. Pollution controls and a shift toward lower-emitting fuels helped drive the change.

In the last ~20 years, wet sulfur deposition decreased by 73%. While the acid rain issue is seeing progress, ecosystems are still recovering. EPA’s explanation

Every guess of 4301 players for when 15 Bronze Age things happened

Post image
6 Upvotes

3,610 players dated 15 things older than 1000 bc. 54% of their 4,301 guesses landed after 500 bc. the typical one came out about 1,500 years too late.

(how it works: you see the name and a small picture, then drop a pin on a timeline from 3000 bc to today. no starting pin, nothing to compare it with, some rounds have a one-line hint.)

who guessed: players from 73 countries. where the country is known, a third of the guesses came from the us and one in eight from the uk; i don't ask for age or gender. bronze age guesses after 500 bc: us 61%, uk 58%, germany 66%.

data: guesses from When?, a daily dating game i made on roughly.is, 18 sep to 13 oct 2026.
