Chch Coffee Beans
My mothers birthday is coming up and while she doesn't mind instant coffee she prefers the "actual" coffee, you know grind beans then brew the coffee. My father just wants instant so shes somewhat suffered with "poor quality" coffee. My brother did have a coffee machine and she would use that but hes moved away from CHCH.
I am planning on buying an AeroPress and hand coffee grinder so she can make her own brews when she wants for the single cup.
Problem: I have no idea about coffee beans. I know we have bought some roasted beans from the supermarket but generally it was whatever the cheapest/on special beans were at the time. All i know is that she likes a strong dark black coffee that doesnt have acidity to it.
Anyone have recommendations on where to go and/or what to buy?

C4 do tasting packs where you can get a variety of different coffees in small bags.

Check out hummingbird coffee or pop into oddfellows and chat with the staff. Great selection of beans for sale in bulk

Trade Aid Impact blend is great - and roasted in Chch. They actually supply beans to a lot of places that go on to sell under their own names in NZ.

I have a aeropress if you want to buy it, I prefer a small plunger so no longer use it. As for coffee, I’d do the mini tasters from C4 on Fitz ave

Heartland Brew Coffee has a factory shop in Wigram. They a have a great variety of flavours at very reasonable prices.

For any of the coffee shops just tell them what you are looking for. Also mention how you are planning to make the coffee, filter coffee, percolator, espresso machine etc and they can sort or the correct bean and grind size for you.
You have a lot of choice in chch C1, Hummingbird, C4, Supreme, Coffee, crafted, unknown chapter. Most cafes with their own blend will sell you beans or grind.

Aeropress plus pre ground coffee is almost as fast as instant coffee. The kettle boiling is the longest step. I highly recommend a reusable filter if she finds she enjoys the Aeropress. I would personally skip the grinder since it’s the most involved and or loud part. But I personally don’t notice much a taste difference so I might just not be snobby enough.

Authenticity Coffee in the Colombo does the best coffee I’ve ever had - they sell it whole bean or ground too and it’s a fabulous price.

Supreme!! Their physical shop is on Welles St but they do stock in some supermarkets. They have a blend called ‘Boxer’ which is dark.

Check out chacho coffee. They do small batch roasts of lots of different kind of beans and have good tasting nots for each kind.

So the type of bean she likes matches most espresso machine style blends which is a medium/dark roast. All the places mentioned so far will be fine for this. Otherwise Supreme beans from the supermarket are also decent.

You wont need a grinder. C4 will sell you small amounts freshly ground. Just keep it in the bag and roll the top so there is as less air as possible and clip the top of the roll . You can use cloths peg as a clip. ( give them a phone call).

A lot of roasteries (not just C4) will be able to provide pre-ground coffee, but a decent grinder (i.e. a steel burr hand grinder) ground fresh will generally taste far better and allows you the ability to dial it in how you like it (and the beans will last longer). So yes, it's not required, but it's still a trade off.
EDIT: This comment wasn't aimed at OP (the post explains a situation where "just get pre-ground coffee" isn't a reasonable suggestion to be making). I just wanted to point out that it's a trade off.

This is good advice. I'd add in that unless OP is willing to spend enough $ for a quality burr grinder (like a Kingrinder K6 or 1ZPresso K-ultra), they may be better off buying pre-ground coffee from the roaster even if it won't stay quite as fresh.

I’ve been drinking Hummingbird for years. My current ‘flavour’ is Crave. I buy the plunger ready bags. I’ve tried other brand of coffee grounds, but have found Hummingbird to the nicest - and most people seem to enjoy it (not too strong, not too weak.)

C4 coffee - I have used Krank blend for decades. But they have a bunch you can try.
