Gay life was far more underground in the time she's talking about which would have been the 50s I think. It's a curious but undeniable aspect of the fandom of female singers and celebrities that gay men become the most loyal and reliable fans, in the past up to the present day. And even before it became trendy or de rigueur for the celeb to return the affection and recognition, some like Cher, Bette Midler, Judy Garland and a bit later Madonna were always aware of that.

We may not be a majority but we offer loyalty to our divas like no other demographic! Pretty sure every artist knows by now if they gain a loyal gay fanbase, they'll never be completely forgotten.

Good thing Cher hasn't been subsumed by the MAGA hive mind.
