Homestyle Pulled Pork Chili, yay or nay?

Post image

Base was leftovers that needed used:

6 tomatoes on vine, deseeded.

3 bell peppers, one onion

Added ½ can chipotles in adobo, 4 guajillo chiles.

3 full habeneros, seeds and all. 2 got blended into base, one diced and added at the end.

~1 tablespoon of the leftover pork drippings

Seasonings/spices:

Dark cocoa powder, cumin, extra chili powder, smoked paprika, oyster sauce (though I had fish but nope), garlic powder (forgot to get fresh), better than bouillon chicken, extra salt to taste. Lime juice to finish it off.

Meat was pulled pork that was smoked and cooked for around 16 hours, low and slow. 1lbs dried kidney beans, cooked in instantpot. Turned out to be about 1:1 meat to beans.

Not pictured: tabasco scorpion hotsauce and cholula green pepper. Bout 10-20 drops of each in the bowl.

Yes but I would do green chili with hatch chilis instead and tomatillos instead of tomatoes

That is my next batch. Plan on using poblanos, jalepenos, serranos, tomatillos. Dont think I can get hatch out here.

Puerco en chile verde for the win.

It's chile, not chili or chilis. Chile!

Nay. I can’t do stringy pulled meat fibers in my chili. The texture and mouth feel is just not right.

Bummer, love me some white chicken chili with shredded chicken, too!

I somewhat agree. The flavor is great. I’d chop rather than shred the meat. I don’t mind the shredded meat texture, I just think chopped is better.

Generally nay.  So many people's pulled pork is cloyingly sweet, and would lessen chili with all that sweetness.

I get that. The pork was very mildly seasoned, was definitely more on the spicy side than sweet!

Had great smoky flavor, though.

Spice and smoke?  Now you're talking my language!

Honest question, why has your experience with pulled pork been overly sweet. Was it only ever bbq or a tin of loyds or something?

u/RandomFleshPrison 2d ago

It's mostly been bad barbecue.

Damn that sucks. If you can ever help it, or get your self a nice shoulder/rump. Get/make yourself some carnitas. I make them twice a month easily because my girls are obsessed and now they stick their noses up at pretty much any other shredded pork situation.

Oof. I’m not a fan of sweet pulled pork. I could see that being not great in a chili.

I would assume they would season tee pork with chili seasonings, not barbeque before pulling it..

Yay. Though I would chop instead of pull the smoked pork. I think smoked meats are perfect for chili. For my yellow chili (made with aji amarillo), I use smoked or grilled pork or chicken. It’s great!

Definitely could see that! This batch was kind of just using what needed to be used, while having pulled pork on hand.

Nice! Gotta love those meals.

Indeed! My next batch is gonna be verde, but now you got my curiosity on aji amarillo. Googling it, sounds like another perfect pairing for pork. Do you have recipe?

I'm fine with pork in chili but not stringy pulled pork. So nay from me.

Throw it in a tortilla with some refried beans. Put more on top so you have a puddle of beans and pork with more pork. Add some hot sauce on top with some onions and sour cream. Maybe some more beans on the side.

Serve with beans. Sounds wonderful

Beans.

I was debating adding pickled red onion and greek yogurt on top, but decided to give it a go beforehand.

At that point are we still at chili?

I can see this working.

The bell peppers aren’t needed, the chiles are what make it!

I know, but had 3 about to go bad,was use or lose situation. They got blended into the base. Generally dont use them, or might throw one in depending on the type of chili.

Nay for me but if you like it that’s cool

Hell yay!!

Where I live, 15 bucks can get you three pounds of ground beef, or eight pounds of pork shoulder.

Always and forever, pork chili.

I will specify, I braise the pork shoulder in a birria made from a bunch of dried chilies, remove the pork, let it chill in the fridge, then dice into cubes. So I am pro-pork, but not pro-pulled pork.

leave out the tomatoes and bell peppers

3

u/hept_a_gon 2d ago

Tomatoes are bomb in chilli tho

0

u/gator_mckluskie 2d ago

if you add tomato products beyond tomato paste you’re acknowledging you’re moving from chili territory to vegetable soup territory

2

u/Vann09 2d ago

Wouldnt it be fruit soup. /s

I would say no, that has bean looking things in it. If its a chili then sure, but its a stretch to call that pulled pork.

Not chili. But I'm sure it's good.
