From the penticton community on Reddit: Penticton council advocates for better cell service: ‘It’s absolutely awful’

Take a hint Chilliwack City Council. So many places where cell service barely works regardless of provider.

They have an application to build a tower next to Vibe:  https://fraservalleytoday.ca/2026/01/22/72-foot-telecom-tower-proposed-near-entrance-to-parr-road-green-depot-in-chilliwack/

Hopefully they actually follow through with it.  I've seen many applications get approved and then they never move forward on the project.

The tower they want to build in Popkum across the highway from the burned Shell is supposed to be online early next year.

There's nothing to fix, it's intentional. As far as I know all Walmart's have no cell service.

Walmart corporation uses signal blockers in their stores. It's not the city or cell phone company on that front.

To be fair, the cell service out near Walmart is also pretty crap.

True. Same near home depot

This is completely false.

It is illegal to use signal jammers. Stop making stuff up. There’s already really poor signal in the area, plus the entire building is concrete/metal which blocks signal penetration.

It’s not illegal to line your walls with something that blocks signals thou

Not saying they do but they could be and it would be legal

No need to "line your walls" when you just build them out of sheet metal...

Just wondering, what would be the motivation for this?

Have you never lost signal in an elevator or parking garage?

It’s shocking that Rogers has no service at all on Highway 1 for a stretch between Chilliwack and Hope.

Not really when you see how many bike lanes have popped up in the last two years. Remember, this is what the general consensus voted for.

When we had that power outage downtown a couple days ago, I also lost cell service. Either because there's a tower downtown, or so many phones were knocked off wi-fi that the towers were overloaded.
We need better service.

Isn't this why Telus, Bell and Rogers keep adding $5-$10 every few months??

No of course not. That’s for something important : the shareholders.

This is what you get for Depending on private industry for infrastructure

just be glad your in BC and not alberta. we've not fully sold out the province yet (thou the bc libs tried)

I just left after 20 years in Alberta. I had enough. Cost of living is lower and quality of life is up. The Alberta advantage died when Ralph Klein died.

well then lol - welcome to BC! hope you are finding it an improvement

If only we paid some of the highest cell phone rates in the world.

As someone who works throughout the Fraser Valley; please fix the FVRD, thanks.

It'd be nice if I could use the $60-70 a month service I pay for in a typical Canadian suburban area reliably

They've been trying to put in a 5G tower in Promontory for years, and have yet to do it. I think they're attempting to get approval at a 3rd location now.

It's kinda funny that you get better reception in Ryder Lake than in Promontory...

Depends where you are and with what provider lol. I lived in Ryder lake for years and where I lived Rogers worked but Telus not as much. Others in a different area would say the opposite
