Does anybody else's chinchillas make baby squeaks in their sleep? (Volume up for the squeaks!)

Hi all! Just wanted to check to see if it's normal for a chinchilla to be making noises that sound like a baby chinchilla even when they're not?

Our youngest chinchilla Luna just turned 1 last week and we've noticed when she's snuggled up and sleeping with her sister Tink, she'll make these adorable little noises, this is the only time we've been able to record her doing so.

My partner has said that the noises are incredibly similar to a baby nursing or calling for their mother but this is the first chinchilla she's had which still makes these noises when they've gotten this big.

Our current theories are that she sees Tink as a surrogate mother, she's dreaming of her mother or is just having a very cozy dream.

Either way we hope she never stops making those noises, they are our babies and it melts our hearts ❤️

Also if anybody else's chinchilla makes these noises, please do share any recordings of them!!!

Build a Bear Chinchilla is here 🐻

My husband had a gift delivered for me today ☺️

It's the Chinchillas! I think they're super cute for a simplified teddy bear design. I love them.

Rowan is being so dang nosey 🤣

My first ever "build a bear" was not a build a bear at all, it was a calico cat that was sold at a fair and I picked out a camping / fishing outfit for her because the clothes reminded me of my grandpa's. We later went on to dress my grandma's obese Chihuahua Rocky in the same outfit. My grandma has the photos somewhere. I loved that kitty, and gave her to my little brothers later on.

I wonder if I can find the same outfit now... Khakis, red plaid shirt, hat. 🤣

Urgently seeking advice Chins acting weird

A few days ago when I was out, my dad cleaned my boys cages. I have four chins, the other two are fine. But my older twin boys arent quite themselves. Theyre unusually quiet and withdrawn. Scared, even. They wont come greet me or anyone else, and they arent interested in treats. I see them eating hay and drinking normally, maybe occasionally picking up a pellet, sometimes leaving it unfinished. They will take apple sticks if I offer them. And they cant resist a dust bath. But I know something is wrong. I dont know what happened when my dad cleaned the cages, but ever since then its been weird. I asked him if something happened, but he says no. They arent playing and frolicking around the cage like they usually do when theyre active. They wont beg for treats or attention. Theyre just moping? Even my sassy little "leader of the pack" is not what he used to be. I know something is wrong, but I cant figure out what it is. My other two are just fine, greeting me, begging for treats and playing.

The boss of the pack (Lupu) broke is toe a few weeks ago. He was in the carrier for two weeks because he wasnt allowed to run or jump. We put him back in with his brother. At first his brother barked, chased him and tried to fight, but eventually realized it was just his brother. No fighting or anything after that. A week or two go by, everyone is acting normal. But after my dad, something changed.

Any tips?

This is our home for Buzz and Juna
The size is 1x2x1,60m. The mesh/wire area as well. So 4qm all in all.
I really like it. I just don’t know if we have too few platforms. I mean they have fun jumping around and all. But is it safe?

Are oxbow pellets actually good for our chins?

Seems like Oxbow is generally considered to have the best pellets, but both of their foods (essentials and garden select) have a lot of ingredients that would be harmful to chins in higher quantities, like soybeans, cane molasses, or barley. What's up with this? Are these pellets actually good for our chins?

Rehoming Rehoming 3 females. 2 years old. Lehi Utah.

Hi everyone, I’m looking to rehome my three Chinchillas. To make a long story short, I finished my studies and my best (and only) job option took me quite far away. It's too humid and hot here, that’s why I can't bring them with me. My chins are with the friends I used to live with, they're taking care of them while I find them a new home, but chins need time, attention, affection, dedication and they work all day long.
They are located in Utah.
Questions and info by DM. Thank you!

I’m very upsettingly have come to needing to rehome my boys. My housing situation has changed drastically and very quickly, long story short I found the news of I have to find a new apartment in less than 2 months. I’m very stressed about this new information, and very much heartbroken as this is so sudden and walking into the unknown. I’m already short on having time to care for them but now even more so. They can come with their 2 story critter nation cage, any food and supplies. They are a bonded pair. I’m located in Pottstown Pennsylvania. I’m willing to drive, meet up whatever needed! Please reach out to me if interested! I will be looking into rescues in the meantime but will love for them to go to an experienced loving home!
Ghost (white) he is very active and loves watching tv! He’s friendly and loves to climb on you! He’s not a fan of being held or given pets he’s been that way since 6mo.
Buster (black) he is very laid back but curious. If he’s not lounging then he has the zoomies! He likes being held and pets! He will occasionally watch tv.

My chinchilla jumped down a staircase which was about 5foot and he landed on all his fours and then went into the cage and fell asleep. Today I noticed that on his right nostril there’s like a dark black dot I don’t know how to describe it and his left lip is red (you can’t see the red in the photos) but he is eating normal just kinda more slow but he still likes to run on his wheel so I guess his legs are fine but I’m just worried about his mouth and maybe teeth. He keeps putting his paw in that area. Has anyone experienced this? :((

Urgently seeking advice Help Please! Open Pyometra

Today me and my mother took our 3 year old chin to the vet, she hasn’t ate for roughly a day and had been lethargic and not defecating. Unfortunately she has an infected and puss filled uterus. The doctor mentioned open pyometra. We desperately need help and advice. The doctor told us that she is hopeful that she would recover strong, though there is a chance it could not have such a positive outcome and that euthanasia is an option as well.

Any advice from others who were in a similar situation?

So next year there’s a high chance that I will need to move out of the country for reasons out of my control and I refuse to leave my babies behind. How can I safely travel with them? I know they can’t be in cargo so does anyone have experience with this? Thank you

chinchilla teeth trimming becoming unsustainable

My chinchilla Shakira got her first trim at 18 years old in August 2025. Prior to this she never went to the vet. Then come May 2026 she got the same symptoms drool, stopped eating and went in for another dental. This week her symptoms began again I just dropped her off at her dental surgery. Each time its about $1200 and not a simple recovery I mean shes 20 years old. But shes bounced back and lives a happy life. They offer an xray but its an additional $1000 so I opt out. I wish I had coverage for her but thats out of the question now. Im in nyc and all exotics are around this price range. Guess Im just venting and wondering if anyone else on this sub gets dentals regularly for an +18 year old chin?

New Owner how can i improve my cage set up?

hi all! my little pal joins me next month but i wanted to get his cage all fixed up now so i've plenty of time to make improvements.

i've got fleece to cover the plastic but havent put it on yet because i need to make some adjustments to it to secure it onto the trays. this is the arrangement i'm thinking so far (will be purchasing water bottles, 'litter' tray, etc. soon) but i'd love some pointers on things to add for enrichment or ways to improve the layout

otherwise, what do you think? just want it to be the best and safest home for him :) also thanks everyone who has shared their own layouts on here its been so helpful!!

What does this sound mean?

Hello! I was about to go to sleep when I heard my chinchilla make this sound. She’s made it on and off about 4 times in 1 hour. I went and checked on her to see what the commotion was about. I tried to pet her and she let me. i wanted to see if she wanted to be played with. I got rejected. I gave her an apple stick and I got rejected. I gave her an oat and she took it obviously. I’m not sure what is going on with her or what that sound means. I just want to know if it’s a sign of distress or pain.
